For a YouTube media URL that has expired or otherwise stopped working, those retries may not be enough: the source may need to be reacquired and FFmpeg restarted.
Retry a temporary interruption to the same HTTP input
Start with this pattern when the input is an HTTP stream and its URL is still valid:

-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_at_eof 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-reconnect_max_retries 100
-i "$INPUT_URL"
-c copy output.mkvFFmpeg documents these as HTTP protocol options. Put them before the relevant -i, because they configure that input. With multiple inputs, place each option group before the input it is meant to affect. FFmpeg protocol documentation lists the reconnect controls and limits.
-reconnect 1enables reconnect attempts when the connection fails before EOF.-reconnect_streamed 1allows retries for streamed or non-seekable inputs.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error and retries. FFmpeg describes this as useful for live or endless streams.-reconnect_delay_max 30caps the reconnect delay at 30 seconds.-reconnect_max_retries 100bounds the number of retries.
The values are a starting point, not a guarantee of recovery. Choose limits that fit the expected interruption and how long the recording should keep trying. With EOF retries enabled, a stream that has genuinely ended may also be retried rather than treated as finished.

Know which failure you are trying to recover from
Reconnect flags address the HTTP connection to the current input. They do not by themselves refresh a YouTube media URL or renew an extraction session. Separate a transport interruption from a source or extraction failure before deciding what to restart.

The reconnect options cover retries against the current HTTP input; the cited FFmpeg documentation does not promise to retrieve a fresh YouTube media URL. An extractor or supervisor is a separate recovery layer, not an extension of those flags.

Pass reconnect options through yt-dlp
yt-dlp documents external downloader selection and downloader-specific arguments, including FFmpeg input arguments with the ffmpeg_i prefix. A starting command for a YouTube watch URL is:

--downloader-args 'ffmpeg_i:-reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30'
'YOUTUBE_WATCH_URL'Check your installed version’s interface with yt-dlp --help and inspect verbose logs to confirm how the arguments are applied. The project documents external downloader integration, but this command is not a universal guarantee that every YouTube live failure will recover. --live-from-start is a separate option for downloading a livestream from its beginning; it is not a reconnect switch. Troubleshoot a reconnect loop that still fails
- Confirm the protocol. These options are documented for HTTP, not as universal reconnect flags for every input protocol.
- Check option placement. Put the protocol options before the input’s
-i; for multiple inputs, scope them to the intended one. - Read the error and exit status. A connection reset is different from an HTTP rejection, expired URL, ended event, or extraction error.
- Stop retrying an unusable URL. If the same failure recurs, reacquire the source through the extraction step or restart the supervising process rather than indefinitely retrying the same URL.
- Plan output recovery separately. If an interruption or process restart matters to the recording, choose an output format and segmentation approach appropriate to the workflow. No single container is established as best for every YouTube recording case.
For a supervisor, bound both retry delays and total attempts or runtime, and retain logs. This makes a persistent failure visible instead of disguising it as a healthy recording process.
