The important distinction is that Windows+Alt+G saves recent footage, while Windows+Alt+R records forward from the moment you activate it. The “last 30 seconds” option is a retrospective clip feature, not a 30-second limit on ordinary recordings.
How to record for longer than 30 seconds
- Enable Xbox Game Bar. Open Windows Settings, search for Xbox, and make sure Xbox Game Bar is enabled. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the exact Settings labels can vary slightly by Windows build.
- Open the game or app you want to capture. Bring it to the foreground. Xbox Game Bar is intended primarily for recording a game or app; do not assume that it will capture every Windows surface, such as the desktop or File Explorer, on every system.
- Start recording. Press Windows+Alt+R. A recording indicator should appear. Continue playing or using the app while the recording runs.
- Stop recording. Press Windows+Alt+R again. The recording is finalized and saved as an MP4.
-
Find the video. Open File Explorer and go to
VideosCaptures. The filename normally includes the game or app name and the recording date and time.
There is no need to press Windows+Alt+G for this workflow. That shortcut is for saving footage that has already happened and retained by Game Bar’s background-capture feature.

The two Xbox Game Bar recording modes
| What you want to do | Shortcut | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Record an upcoming session or event | Windows+Alt+R | Starts recording from the present moment. Press it again to stop. |
| Save something that just happened | Windows+Alt+G | Saves the recent footage retained by background recording. It cannot recover footage from before background recording was enabled. |
| Turn the microphone on or off while recording | Windows+Alt+M | Toggles microphone capture during the recording. |
How to include game audio and your microphone
Before starting an important recording, test the audio rather than discovering afterward that the MP4 is silent.
- Press Windows+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open Settings.
- Select Capturing.
- Under the audio options, choose All when that option is available. This tells Game Bar to include the computer audio sources supported by the current configuration.
- Start a short test recording and play it back.
- Use Windows+Alt+M during a recording if you need to toggle the microphone.
Audio compatibility is not universal. Protected content, unusual application audio paths, privacy settings, drivers, and the selected Windows audio device can affect what is captured. If the video works but has no sound, check the Capturing settings and test playback before troubleshooting the recording length.
Can Xbox Game Bar record for hours?
Xbox Game Bar can record substantially longer than 30 seconds, but there is no single retrospective or session-duration maximum that can safely be promised for every Windows and Xbox Game Bar installation. Available controls and practical limits can vary with the Windows build, Game Bar version, device configuration, policy, available storage, and the application being recorded.

For a long session, start with Windows+Alt+R and verify that the recording indicator appears. Keep enough free space on the destination drive, and consider making a short test recording using the same game, app, and audio setup. Very long recordings can take time to finalize after you stop them; do not immediately shut down Windows if the file has not appeared yet.
What if the event already happened?
If the moment has already occurred, the normal recording shortcut cannot recreate it. Your only Xbox Game Bar option is retrospective capture, provided background recording was enabled before the event and the relevant footage is still within the configured history window.
To prepare for unexpected moments:
- Press Windows+G.
- Open Settings and choose Capturing.
- Enable the applicable background-recording or historical-capture option.
- Use Windows+Alt+G after an unexpected moment to save the retained footage.
On PC, Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes background recording as a separate feature that must be enabled through Game Bar’s Capturing settings. The app may also need to be recognized or marked as a game. The available history duration depends on the particular Windows and Game Bar configuration, so do not treat “30 seconds” as a universal current maximum—or assume that every system offers a longer interval.

Why Windows+Alt+R may not work
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled. Search Windows Settings for Xbox and enable Game Bar if necessary.
- Test the overlay. Press Windows+G. If the overlay does not open, the shortcut will not start a recording until Game Bar itself is available.
- Activate the intended app. Click the game or app so it is the foreground window, then try the recording shortcut again.
- Check for a disabled capture state. The current app, Windows policy, hardware, driver state, or device configuration may prevent capture.
- Check free storage. A recording may fail to start or finish if the destination drive does not have enough space.
- Look in the correct folder. Check
VideosCapturesrather than assuming the video was saved to the game’s installation folder or the desktop. - Wait for finalization. After stopping a lengthy recording, give Windows time to finish writing the MP4 before closing the app, signing out, or shutting down.
If a long recording is missing after you stop
First check VideosCaptures, available storage, and whether the file is still being finalized. Community troubleshooting reports describe cases in which a lengthy recording was not immediately saved after stopping, but this is not a universal Microsoft-documented failure. If the file never appears, a recovery may not be possible, which is why a short test and adequate free space matter before an important session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should you edit the registry?
Microsoft documents registry values related to GameDVR, historical video, recording, and Game Bar behavior. Registry editing is an advanced diagnostic step, not a sensible first-line fix for a shortcut that does nothing. Changing the wrong value can create additional Windows problems. Confirm the basic settings, active app, storage, permissions, and drivers first; only use registry changes when following precise, version-appropriate technical guidance and after creating a backup.
A reliable setup for a long recording
- Enable Xbox Game Bar before launching the session.
- Open the game or app and confirm it is the active window.
- Check the Capturing audio setting and microphone state.
- Make a brief test recording and play it back.
- Confirm that the test file appears in
VideosCaptures. - Check free storage on the drive containing the Videos folder.
- Press Windows+Alt+R before the important action begins.
- Press the shortcut again to stop, then wait for the MP4 to finish saving.
Bottom line
For footage that has not happened yet, ignore the “last 30 seconds” wording and use the normal recorder: press Windows+Alt+R to start, then press it again to stop. The video should be an MP4 in VideosCaptures. Use Windows+Alt+G only for a recent event that was already retained by background recording.
