Use the class platform’s built-in recorder if your account, host and organization allow it. After class, find and review the saved file, remove or secure material that should not be public, then upload it through YouTube Studio. Recording availability, storage and what appears in the recording differ between Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams; a recording notice does not by itself settle consent or publication rights.
Before class: check permission, storage and what will be captured
Confirm recording is enabled for your account and that the host or administrator permits it. Let participants know before recording, follow your school or employer’s rules, and obtain any permission required in your jurisdiction. Rules can depend on location, participant age and the audience for the finished video.
- Check available storage. Zoom computer recordings use local disk space; Meet recordings use the organizer’s Google Drive; Teams recordings are stored in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, depending on meeting type.
- Plan the recording view. A meeting recorder captures the platform’s configured meeting view, not necessarily every item visible on your screen. Review the specific platform’s limits below.
- Decide what should be included. Consider hiding or excluding student names, faces, chat and questions when they are not needed. Avoid displaying personal information.
- Check the material you will present. Slides, music, video clips and other third-party material may have separate rights. Recording a class does not transfer those rights to you.
Record in Zoom
Zoom computer recording is available on free and paid accounts, but the account owner or administrator can disable it, and an administrator may lock the setting. It requires the Zoom desktop app on Windows, macOS or Linux; computer recording is not supported on iOS or Android.
- Before class, sign in to the Zoom web portal and open Settings > Recording.
- Enable Record to computer files. If the control is unavailable or locked, ask the account owner or administrator whether recording can be enabled.
- During class, use the Zoom desktop app’s meeting controls to start a computer recording, if your permissions allow it. If you are a participant, the host’s settings determine whether you can record or request permission.
- After class, locate the recording on the computer used to record. Check that the device has enough disk space and that the file finished processing before closing or moving it.
Zoom computer recordings can capture video, shared content, audio, chat messages and closed captions. Check the saved file rather than assuming every view or on-screen item made it into the recording.

Record in Google Meet
Meet recording depends on the organization’s administrator settings and on whether the host or a participant with eligible host permissions is allowed to record. Google Workspace for Education eligibility differs by edition: Education Fundamentals and Education Standard do not let teachers, staff or students record meetings they organize. Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Education Plus have different eligibility rules, so check the account’s actual permissions before class.
- Ask the Workspace administrator or meeting organizer to confirm recording is enabled and that your role is eligible.
- In the meeting, use the available recording control to start recording. If it is missing, the account, meeting or your permissions may not allow it.
- After the meeting, look in the organizer’s Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder. Google says recordings include the active speaker and presented material.
- Check the organizer’s Drive storage quota and download the file from Drive if you need a local copy for review or editing.
Captions can be recorded, but they may become available later than the video. Google’s help information also describes a July 2026 folder change: existing “Meet Recordings” are moved into a “Legacy Meet Recordings” folder within “Google Meet,” while new recordings use meeting-specific subfolders.

Record in Microsoft Teams
Teams recording requires an eligible license and the organizer’s cloud-recording policy and IT settings must allow it. Under Microsoft’s standard conditions, guests and people from other organizations cannot start or stop the recording. Availability, access, storage and expiration may also depend on organizational settings.
- In the meeting, select More actions > Record and transcribe > Start recording, then confirm.
- Participants receive an automatic recording notification. Follow your organization’s rules and any applicable consent requirements before continuing.
- After the meeting, find the recording in the organizer’s OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, depending on the meeting type. Share it explicitly if external attendees need access.
- Review it for missing content before treating it as a complete class recording.
Teams has capture limitations: for example, it does not record more than four video streams at once, whiteboards and annotations, shared notes, app-shared content, or embedded video and animation in PowerPoint Live. A recording may therefore omit material that was visible or used during the meeting.

Review the recording before uploading
Play the entire file or review it carefully before publication. Verify that the sound is understandable, slides are legible, and the beginning and ending are intact. Look for participant contributions, chat, names, faces, personal information and third-party media that should be removed, redacted or kept private. Edit the file or obtain permission as needed.
Capturing audio does not guarantee that it is clear. If you teach regularly, an optional audio-quality improvement is to use a suitable external microphone; it is not required to record or upload a class.

Upload the class recording in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose the upload option, then select the reviewed video file.
- Add a clear title and description, and set the audience appropriately.
- Add captions or subtitles, or check whether recorded captions are available and accurate. Correct errors that could change the meaning of the lesson.
- For an educational upload, fill in relevant education-specific fields, such as type, level, academic system, and course or standard, when offered.
- Review the copyright checks shown during upload. A clean check is not a guarantee that no later claim or removal request can occur.
- Choose visibility deliberately before publishing or sharing the link.
Choose private, unlisted or public visibility
| Visibility | Who can watch | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Private | The creator and people specifically selected to access it. Comments are unavailable. | Use when access should be restricted to selected people. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link can watch and reshare it. It does not ordinarily appear in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab. | Use only when link-based access is acceptable; it is not confidential or restricted to enrolled students. |
| Public | Available to everyone and eligible for search, related videos and recommendations. | Use when the class is intended for general viewing and you have checked privacy, institutional rules and rights. |
If a recording is only for enrolled participants and contains sensitive material, use private access with selected viewers or an institution-approved learning platform rather than relying on an unlisted link.

Notify participants before recording and follow school or employer policy. Whether consent is legally required depends on the circumstances and jurisdiction; platform documentation alone cannot determine your obligations. Consider leaving student names, faces, chat and questions out of the public version unless they are necessary and appropriately cleared.

You remain responsible for rights in slides, music, video clips and other third-party material. Credit alone does not grant permission, and uploading someone else’s work can lead to a Content ID claim or copyright removal request. Obtain permission or rely only on a copyright exception that actually applies to your use; do not assume fair use applies. YouTube does not decide ownership disputes.
Troubleshooting: recording missing, incomplete or unavailable
- Zoom has no recording control: Check that you are using the desktop app, that computer recording is enabled in the web portal, and that the host or administrator has not disabled or locked it. Participants may need the host’s permission.
- Meet has no recording option: Ask the Workspace administrator to check the organization setting, your role and the account’s edition eligibility. Education Fundamentals and Education Standard do not permit teachers, staff or students to record meetings they organize.
- A Meet file has not appeared: Check the organizer’s Drive, its storage quota and the Google Meet folder structure. Captions may arrive after the video. For existing recordings affected by Google’s July 2026 change, check the “Legacy Meet Recordings” folder within “Google Meet.”
- Teams recording cannot start: Check the license, organizer policy and IT settings, and confirm you are not a guest or external participant trying to control the recording. If it starts but misses content, account for Teams’ documented capture limitations.
- The file is missing content or hard to hear: Play it before uploading. Meeting recorders may not capture every shared element, and an incomplete view or unclear audio may require editing or a new recording.
- YouTube flags material: Review the claim and the rights for the specific material. Acknowledging the creator or adding a disclaimer does not itself provide permission.
Or let it run in the cloud
Recording a class and uploading it as a normal YouTube video is different from looping an already-uploaded recording as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. If you have permission to use a finished class recording that way, StreamNeo can keep it running from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera classes. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
