Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn OBS Studio, put each independently captured audio source on the recording tracks you want in Edit → Advanced Audio Properties (or open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer gear menu), then enable those tracks in Settings → Output. Keep a complete mix on track 1 if you want the recording to play normally in a standard video player. This creates editable local audio tracks; it does not, by itself, configure a separate Twitch VOD mix.
Decide which audio you need to separate
There are two related but distinct jobs: saving separate tracks in a local recording for editing, and sending a different audio mix to a platform’s saved VOD. Configure each destination separately; a multitrack recording does not automatically give you a VOD with different audio.
- Local recording: use OBS’s recording tracks to preserve sources such as your microphone, game audio, and chat separately for post-production.
- Twitch VOD: OBS can route one audio feed to the live stream and another to the VOD. That routing is not a guarantee that a source has been removed from a local recording.
Before changing track assignments, check that the sources you want to isolate appear separately in OBS. If game sound and music arrive together as one desktop or console-capture source, assigning that source to multiple tracks will only duplicate the combined signal; it cannot recover the original components.
Set up separate tracks for an OBS recording
- Open Advanced Audio Properties. In OBS, use Edit → Advanced Audio Properties, or open the Audio Mixer’s gear menu and choose the same option.
- Assign sources to tracks. In the track columns, select the tracks each source should appear on. A useful arrangement is to put every source on track 1 for a complete mix, then put individual sources on tracks 2–6 as needed. For example, put microphone, game, and chat on track 1; put the microphone alone on track 2, game alone on track 3, and chat alone on track 4.
- Enable those tracks for recording. Open Settings → Output and enable the audio tracks you assigned. Track assignment alone does not enable a track in the recording output.
- Make a short test recording. Import it into the video editor you plan to use and confirm that the tracks appear as expected before relying on the setup for a long stream.
OBS’s Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, dated July 14, 2023, recommends retaining a complete mix on track 1 when you need the file to play in a standard video player. Such players generally play one audio track at a time, rather than combining all the recording’s tracks into a mix. Track presentation and import behavior can differ by player, editor, and container, so verify your own workflow.

Route a different audio mix to a Twitch VOD
OBS’s Twitch VOD feature separates the live audio feed from the audio saved to the VOD. In the default mapping documented by OBS, track 1 is the live feed and track 2 is the VOD feed; tracks 3–6 remain available for editing separation. This is a Twitch-specific workflow, not a general setting for every streaming platform.
- Connect your Twitch account in OBS. Open Settings → Stream and connect the Twitch account you plan to use.
- Enable the Twitch VOD track. Open Settings → Output and turn on the Twitch VOD track option. The visible controls can depend on whether OBS is in Simple or Advanced output mode and on the app version.
- Choose which sources go to the VOD. In Advanced Audio Properties, route each source to the live and VOD tracks you intend to use. To keep a music source out of the VOD while leaving it in the live mix, the music must be separately available and routed to the live track but not the VOD track; route the other sources to both as appropriate.
- Test the saved VOD. Make a test broadcast, then check the VOD at a point where the music or other excluded source is audible. Confirm the result before relying on the routing.
For a source such as music, Elgato’s guide recommends capturing it separately—for example, with Application Audio Capture or a virtual audio device—instead of folding it into Desktop Audio. If OBS monitoring causes duplicate sound, Elgato advises choosing headphones as the monitoring device when OBS does not capture that device. Its Twitch VOD track guide was last updated August 31, 2026; its instructions include an optional Wave Link routing approach, whose suitability depends on the current software and setup.

Audio routing only controls what is included in the saved VOD. It does not establish whether you have permission to transmit or publish a particular recording. Excluding music from a VOD does not make it safe or authorized to use in the live broadcast.
Know what can—and cannot—be separated
Separate sources can be routed separately
If your microphone, game audio, and chat are distinct OBS sources, you can assign them to different recording tracks and choose which are included in the Twitch live and VOD feeds.

A combined capture stays combined
If a console capture card delivers game audio as one combined signal, OBS cannot split in-game music from effects after capture. Elgato’s guide describes this limitation for console audio. Check whether the game offers a Streamer Mode or separate music and radio volume controls; these can change what enters the captured mix, but they do not separate audio that OBS has already received as one source.
Local recording and VOD routing need separate checks
For a local multitrack file, confirm the assigned tracks are enabled under Settings → Output. For a Twitch VOD, confirm source membership on the live and VOD feeds, then inspect the saved VOD. Do not assume one test proves the other destination is configured correctly.

Other recording options and compatibility checks
Twitch’s Help Portal search result for Local Recording describes a multitrack local-recording option for system audio, microphone, and stream-only audio, with up to four tracks selectable, and recommends MKV to reduce corruption risk if a recording crashes. The page could not be verified directly here, so check the current Twitch interface and availability before relying on those details. OBS’s track assignment workflow requires no hardware purchase; an audio interface is only relevant if you need an independent input your current setup does not expose.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect tracks
- The recording has only one track: confirm that the desired tracks are enabled in Settings → Output, then check the source assignments in Advanced Audio Properties and make another short recording.
- A track contains the full mix instead of one source: inspect the track-column selections. A complete mix on track 1 is useful for playback, but tracks meant for isolated editing should contain only their intended sources.
- The file sounds silent in a standard player: the player may be playing a different audio track rather than combining tracks. Keep a complete mix on track 1 and check the file in your editor.
- Music is still audible in the Twitch VOD: make sure music is a distinct OBS source rather than part of Desktop Audio or a combined capture, check its VOD-track assignment, and inspect a newly saved test VOD.
- Music and game effects cannot be separated: if they arrive through one combined console or desktop source, OBS has no independent signals to route. Look for separate in-game audio controls or a separately captured application source.
- You hear monitoring twice: check OBS’s monitoring-device selection and use headphones that OBS does not capture, as Elgato recommends.
Or let it run in the cloud
For creators whose separate audio tracks are for editing a live gameplay broadcast, the OBS workflow above is the relevant method. If instead you want a pre-recorded video playlist to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is a different tool: upload the video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
