To schedule a prerecorded lecture as a YouTube Live event with StreamYard, create a prerecorded broadcast, upload an MP4 encoded with H.264 (or choose a past StreamYard recording), select a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, set the event details and time, then create the broadcast. It starts at the scheduled time and ends when the video finishes.
Before you schedule: check the video and account limits
StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream workflow uses an uploaded video file or a recording already stored as a past StreamYard broadcast. You do not need a camera or capture card to play a lecture that has already been recorded.
- Format: MP4 with H.264 video encoding.
- Bitrate: no more than 10 Mbps (10,000 Kbps).
- Maximum file size: 10 GB on Core and Advanced; 25 GB on Teams and StreamYard Business.
- Maximum video duration: 2 hours on Core, 4 hours on Advanced, and 8 hours on Teams and StreamYard Business.
- Output resolution: up to 1080p for prerecorded broadcasts on paid plans.
- How far ahead you can schedule: up to 365 days.
- Simultaneously scheduled prerecorded streams: up to 5 on Core, 10 on Advanced, and unlimited on Teams and StreamYard Business.
These are plan-specific limits. Confirm the current limits for your account before uploading or relying on a schedule. If an upload fails or playback lags, StreamYard recommends re-encoding the file with HandBrake.
Schedule the prerecorded lecture in StreamYard
- Confirm YouTube is ready. Live streaming must already be enabled on the YouTube channel you intend to use. Make sure you can select that channel in StreamYard before building the event.
- Open the prerecorded broadcast creator. In StreamYard, go to Home → Create → Live Stream → Pre-recorded video.
- Choose the recording. Upload the lecture from your computer, or select a past StreamYard broadcast. Check that the chosen file is the final version and fits your plan’s file-size and duration limits.
- Select YouTube. Choose the channel that will host the event.
- Enter the event details. Add a title and description, set the privacy option, and choose the date and time. You can also upload a thumbnail while scheduling; StreamYard’s YouTube scheduling guide says YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels.
- Decide whether to schedule an announcement post. This determines when the shareable watch link becomes available. Set it now if viewers need the link before the lecture begins.
- Create the broadcast. Select Create broadcast. From Home, use Check status to see whether the broadcast is live and open it once it starts.
Choose how viewers get the YouTube link

StreamYard says the announcement timing cannot be added or changed after the stream is created. If you created the broadcast without an announcement and need the link earlier, its stated remedy is to delete and recreate the broadcast with the desired announcement time.

What happens during automated playback
The prerecorded lecture plays automatically at the scheduled time and the broadcast ends when the video finishes. This is not a live-controlled StreamYard studio during playback: you cannot control overlays or other media assets on-stream, and comments cannot be shown on-screen. Viewers can still use YouTube chat, but the host should not promise live on-screen Q&A or production changes while the recording plays.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The file will not upload: Check that it is an MP4 with H.264 video, stays at or below 10 Mbps, and is within your plan’s size and duration limits. If needed, re-encode with HandBrake.
- The YouTube channel is missing or cannot be selected: Confirm that live streaming is enabled on that YouTube channel, then try selecting it again.
- The prerecorded video lags: StreamYard recommends re-encoding with HandBrake; also verify that the file meets its stated format and bitrate requirements.
- You cannot share the watch link yet: Without an announcement post, the link appears when the stream goes live. If the broadcast already exists, StreamYard’s stated option for earlier availability is to recreate it with an announcement scheduled.
- You cannot show chat or change overlays during playback: These are limits of automated prerecorded playback, not settings to enable in the broadcast. Viewers may still chat on YouTube separately.
