To record a sound in Phasmophobia, switch on the Sound Recorder, follow its proximity indicator toward an active sound, then hold your configured Use control until the recorder confirms the capture. Turning the device on only makes it scan; it does not save a clip by itself.
How to capture a sound
- Take the Sound Recorder into the investigation and switch it on. It scans for nearby sounds the game can record.
- Follow its range indicator. Move closer to the source while it is still active; a sound can disappear before you reach recording range.
- Hold your configured Use control. Keep holding until the capture completes. The exact key or button depends on your control bindings; the official guidance does not establish one universal mapping for every platform.
- Check for the completion cue. Tier 1 flashes a light; Tiers 2 and 3 provide an audio signifier. Then open the Journal’s Sounds page to find and play the clip.
The official instructions describe the scan, range indicator and “Hold Use” action. For proximity feedback, the community wiki describes Tier 1 meter lights turning green, Tier 2’s graph rising above its bar, and Tier 3’s center radar circle becoming solid; treat these interface details as secondary-source guidance.
What sounds can the recorder capture?
The Sound Recorder is for valid in-game sound media, not a general-purpose recorder for arbitrary player speech or every ambient noise. Kinetic Games lists paranormal sounds, a hunting ghost, singing Ghost events and Spirit Box responses as examples. Its developer preview also notes audio from equipment such as the Spirit Box and paranormal sounds otherwise heard through the Parabolic Microphone. The Parabolic Microphone is a separate tool; the Sound Recorder captures eligible sounds rather than replacing it.
Some sound opportunities are brief. Keep the recorder on, watch the range feedback, and start holding Use as soon as you are close enough. Kinetic Games adjusted recording range for hunts and events in a Chronicle patch and made the scream at the end of an event recordable, which increased the capture window.

How many clips can you save?
Kinetic Games says a contract can hold up to three captured sounds. Recorded clips are available from the Journal’s Sounds page. This is a limit on captured sounds per contract, not a guarantee that three will be available in every investigation.
How to tell whether a capture is new or a duplicate
In v0.19.0.0, Kinetic Games added duplicate indicators to Sound Recorders, with subdued indicators that vary by tier. The Chronicle system classifies a first capture of a piece of media as Unique; repeated captures of the same media are Duplicates. Duplicates earn less money and experience than a first capture. A Perfect Investigation requires the Journal to be filled with Unique Media.

Check the recorder’s indicator before using one of your limited sound slots on a repeat. The sources establish the three-sound capacity, but deletion allowances and related behavior can depend on difficulty and later updates, so there is no timeless fixed deletion number to rely on.
Sound Recorder tiers: what differs?
The basic process—scan, approach, hold Use, and confirm—applies across tiers. What differs is the interface feedback and, in some cases, progression or reward details.

The official announcement says Tiers 2 and 3 unlock later, but does not give their unlock levels. The tier-specific proximity descriptions above come from the community wiki rather than the official patch notes.

The recorder’s scan and the capture action are separate. Detection tells you that a potentially recordable source is nearby; you still need to move into range, hold Use while it is available, and wait for the tier’s completion cue. If you only switched the device on or saw it react to a sound, check the Journal’s Sounds page rather than assuming a clip was saved.

Kinetic Games’ v0.19.0.0 patch notes say it “Added a ‘Hold Use’ sticky note on the Training whiteboards.” That guidance reinforces the key action: hold Use to record, rather than treating the recorder’s scan as a completed capture.
Version and platform notes
Kinetic Games’ Chronicle announcement said the update was live for Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2 and Xbox Series X/S. The cited official material does not identify regional differences in the Sound Recorder mechanic. The newest recorder-specific official notes covered here are v0.19.0.0; later patches may change indicators, rewards or other details.
