The result is a draft of HTTP requests, not a finished load test. Filtering noise, adding cookie handling, replacing hard-coded data, extracting dynamic values, validating failures, and finally running outside the GUI are what turn that draft into a reusable scenario.

What JMeter recording captures—and what it does not
The HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder intercepts traffic from a normal browser and creates sampler objects in your JMeter test plan. Apache describes it as allowing JMeter to “intercept and record your actions while you browse your web application with your normal browser.” For a browser-based game, that can include opening the site, signing in, selecting a mode, changing a loadout, or completing another HTTP-driven journey.

The recorder sees requests that actually pass through its proxy. It does not infer business intent, choose assertions, discover which values are unique per player, or design a safe concurrency model. A recorded plan commonly contains static assets, analytics calls, repeated requests, cookies from one browser session, and values that will expire when another virtual user runs the test. Treat the first recording as raw material.
- Recording is useful for: quickly obtaining the request order, methods, paths, headers, and payload shapes produced by a real browser.
- Recording is not enough for: a production-ready load script, realistic test data, dynamic-session handling, or a decision about how many users to generate.
- Protocol boundary: this workflow is designed around browser HTTP and HTTPS traffic. If the behavior you need to test is not represented by browser requests, construct the plan with appropriate samplers instead of expecting the proxy recording to create it automatically.
Prepare the browser journey before starting JMeter
A disciplined capture is easier to repair than a long, exploratory session. Decide exactly which scenario the recording should represent and start with a fresh browser state when the application’s cookies or cached authentication could alter the flow.

Define one scenario
Write the journey as a short sequence before opening the recorder. For example, a browser game scenario might be “open the login page, authenticate a test account, enter the lobby, open a profile, and start one match.” Keep that capture to one business flow. Separate login, matchmaking, store, and other journeys into their own Recording Controllers or plans unless they genuinely belong to one transaction.
Use a controlled account and data set
- Use a test account whose state can be reset or understood by the team running the test.
- Know which fields are fixed for the scenario and which should vary for each virtual user.
- Decide whether a private browsing session is appropriate. A private session is useful when you need a clean cookie state and do not want an existing login to bypass the steps you intend to capture.
- Close unrelated tabs and applications that could send traffic through the same proxy.
Check the proxy route
JMeter can only record traffic that the browser sends to it. Note the host name or IP address of the machine running JMeter and the recorder port you will use. Apache’s example uses localhost and port 8888, with the browser proxy enabled for all protocols. If the browser is configured to bypass localhost, plan to use the machine’s host name or IP address instead.

Create and configure the recording plan
- Start JMeter. Open the JMeter application and choose Templates….
- Choose the Recording template. Create the plan so JMeter adds the components needed for proxy recording.
- Set the target in HTTP Request Defaults. Enter the target server name or IP address used by the application. Keeping the host in one defaults element makes later review and parameterization easier than repeating it in every sampler.
- Locate the HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder. Review its listening host and port before starting it. The port must be free and must match the browser’s manual proxy settings.
- Choose a destination controller. Configure the recorder to place captured samplers under a Recording Controller. This gives the scenario a clear boundary and lets you keep separate journeys organized in the test plan.
- Start the recorder. JMeter will listen for browser traffic on the configured proxy endpoint. Do not begin the business journey until the recorder is running.
If the template or your existing plan does not include a Recording Controller, add one under the relevant Thread Group and select it as the recorder’s target. The controller is an organizational container; it does not, by itself, make requests realistic or add pacing.
Configure the browser proxy and HTTPS trust
Set a manual proxy
In the browser’s network or proxy settings, select a manual proxy and enter the same host and port that JMeter is listening on. Apache’s example is host localhost, port 8888, with the proxy enabled for all protocols. Save the setting, then open the application in that browser. A request that does not appear in JMeter usually means the browser is not using this proxy, is using a different port, or is exempting the target host.
Install JMeter’s temporary CA for HTTPS
HTTPS encrypts the browser-to-server connection, so the recorder needs the browser to trust its interception certificate. When JMeter starts HTTPS recording, it generates a certificate named ApacheJMeterTemporaryRootCA.crt. Install or accept that certificate in the browser’s trust store used for the recording session. Without this trust, HTTPS requests commonly fail with an unknown_ca error and no usable encrypted traffic is captured.

Use this temporary certificate only for controlled testing. After recording, remove the temporary trust if your organization’s browser policy requires it, and never treat it as a permanent certificate for normal browsing.
Prove that traffic is going through JMeter
Open a page in the target application and watch the recorder or its captured samplers. Then stop the recorder briefly and try another page. If the browser continues to work exactly as before, it is probably bypassing the proxy; correct the browser’s proxy host, port, protocol coverage, or bypass list before recording the real scenario.
Record one clean browser journey
- Start from the intended initial state. Use the fresh or private session prepared earlier. Do not leave an old authenticated session active if login is part of the scenario.
- Perform only the planned actions. Follow the scenario once, at normal speed. Avoid opening developer tools, unrelated pages, or additional tabs during the capture.
- Let required responses finish. Moving on before a page or game action completes can produce an order that does not represent a valid user flow.
- Stop the recorder immediately after the final action. This prevents post-scenario navigation and background activity from being mixed into the controller.
- Save the JMeter plan. Keep the original capture as a reference before making extensive edits. A separate cleaned copy makes it easier to compare later changes with the browser’s actual traffic.
- Reset the browser proxy. Return the browser to its normal network configuration so ordinary browsing does not continue through JMeter.
One clean pass is preferable to repeatedly recording the same journey into one controller. Re-recording after every exploratory click creates duplicate samplers and makes it difficult to tell which request belongs to the intended scenario.
Filter noise before it overwhelms the plan
Browsers request much more than the business action a tester cares about. Images, CSS, JavaScript bundles, analytics beacons, advertising, telemetry, and calls to unrelated hosts can multiply the number of samplers. Configure include and exclude patterns in the recorder before the capture whenever possible.
Use include patterns for the application under test
An include pattern limits capture to hosts or paths that belong to the scenario. This is useful when the page loads several domains but the test should represent only the game service or API that your team owns. Keep the pattern specific enough to avoid collecting unrelated origins, while retaining every endpoint required for the user journey.

Use exclude patterns for predictable static noise
Exclude patterns can remove images, stylesheets, JavaScript files, analytics, and other resources that do not belong in the business transaction. Apply exclusions before recording rather than deleting hundreds of samplers afterward. Review the first filtered capture to ensure that a JavaScript request carrying an essential API call was not removed merely because it came from a script-related path.
Review what remains
- Group the retained samplers beneath the correct Recording Controller.
- Delete duplicate navigations and accidental clicks that are outside the defined scenario.
- Check that the host, path, method, query string, headers, and request body match the action you performed.
- Keep a request only when the application needs it to progress or when it is an intentional part of the transaction you want to measure.
Turn the raw recording into a reusable scenario
Cleaning is where most of the test-design work happens. The browser session that produced the recording contains state that must be recreated, varied, or extracted when JMeter runs with other threads.
Add an HTTP Cookie Manager
Browsers send cookies during recording, but those cookies are not saved in the plan as reusable runtime state for future virtual users. Add an HTTP Cookie Manager to the relevant scope so JMeter can receive, store, and resend cookies during execution. This is essential for applications that use cookies to maintain login, session, preferences, or other state.
Replace repeated hosts and fixed inputs
Recorded samplers often repeat the same server name or contain values that should be changed between environments. Add User Defined Variables for repeated host names, paths, or scenario settings, then reference those variables from the requests. A variable for the target host lets you move the plan between environments without editing every sampler individually.
Feed user data with CSV Data Set Config
When each virtual user needs a different account, character, item, or other input, place the values in a file and add CSV Data Set Config. Map the columns to JMeter variables and replace the recorded literals in request parameters or bodies. Decide how rows are shared among threads according to the behavior you need; the important point is to avoid every thread submitting the same captured identity when the application expects unique users.

Generate values with JMeter functions
For values that can be generated rather than stored in a file, JMeter functions such as __counter and __time can supply changing numbers or timestamps. Use them only where the application accepts generated values. A timestamp inserted into a field that requires a server-issued identifier will not make the request valid; generation and correlation solve different problems.
Correlate dynamic responses
Many applications return a token, identifier, or one-time value that later requests must send back. Capture that value from the response with a JSON Extractor when the response is JSON, or a Regular Expression Extractor when a regular expression is appropriate. Replace the later hard-coded value with the extractor variable. This correlation step is what allows a new session or newly created object to flow through subsequent requests instead of replaying an identifier from the original browser run.
Check request order and state transitions
Read the plan from top to bottom as if you were a new virtual user. Login or session-establishing calls must precede requests that require that state. A response extractor must run before the sampler that references its variable. If a request is optional in the browser, decide whether it belongs in the measured scenario or should be removed so that every iteration follows a known path.

Validate the plan before adding load
Use Thread Group → Validate while debugging. Validation gives you a controlled way to inspect whether the cleaned plan can execute and whether failures appear before you increase users, ramp-up, or loop count.
- Run the validation with a small, controlled execution rather than a large load profile.
- Inspect failed samplers and their response data, not just the aggregate error count.
- For authentication failures, check cookie handling, credentials supplied by the CSV file, and any token extractor that feeds later requests.
- For a missing-variable failure, confirm that the extractor ran on the response you expect and that the variable name is spelled consistently in later samplers.
- For an unexpected redirect or authorization response, compare the request order and headers with the successful browser journey.
- Repeat validation after each major cleanup or parameterization change so that one edit does not hide another error.
GUI execution is appropriate for debugging and inspection because you can see the plan and response details. Do not use an interactive GUI run as the way to generate substantial load; the interface adds overhead and is intended for working on the test rather than acting as the load engine.

Run serious load tests in non-GUI mode
After the scenario validates, save the plan and execute it from the command line for substantial load generation. Apache’s example command is:
jmeter -n -t test.jmx -l results.jtl -e -o reportHere, -n selects non-GUI mode, -t test.jmx supplies the saved test plan, -l results.jtl writes result data, and -e -o report creates an HTML report in the specified output directory. Choose a new or empty report directory as required by your JMeter setup.

Manual construction versus proxy recording
Recording and manual plan construction solve different problems. Use the following trade-offs when deciding how to build a scenario or how much of a recorded plan to keep.

A practical workflow is often hybrid: record a short, representative journey to learn the application’s request sequence, then manually remove noise and construct the control, data, and correlation elements that the recorder cannot infer.

Final pre-load checklist
- The browser proxy has been reset after recording, and the temporary HTTPS trust is handled according to your test-environment policy.
- The plan has a Recording Controller or other clear structure for the scenario.
- Include and exclude filters removed noise without deleting required application requests.
- An HTTP Cookie Manager is present where the application uses cookies.
- Repeated hosts and environment-specific values use User Defined Variables.
- Per-user data comes from CSV Data Set Config or an appropriate JMeter function.
- Dynamic tokens and identifiers are extracted from responses and referenced later.
- Thread Group → Validate succeeds for a controlled run, and response data has been reviewed.
- The saved plan runs in non-GUI mode with result and report files before any substantial increase in users, ramp-up, or loops.
