Choose OBS if you want detailed control over desktop capture, audio, and recording output. Choose Loom if you want a quick screen-and-camera message that is easy to share and review through a hosted video library. Neither is the universal winner: the better fit depends on your workflow, sharing needs, recording length, and computer. This is a workflow comparison, not a head-to-head quality test.
OBS vs. Loom at a glance
| Need | Better starting fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Choose exactly what appears on screen, combine sources, and adjust recording output | OBS | OBS uses configurable scenes and sources, with audio-device and output settings you can control. OBS Quick Start Guide; OBS Recording Guide. |
| Make a quick work update or tutorial with a camera bubble, then share it | Loom | Loom’s recorder centers on screen, camera, and audio capture followed by editing or link sharing. Loom screen recorder. |
| Record free videos that regularly exceed five minutes | OBS, if your computer handles the workload | Loom Starter currently limits each screen recording to five minutes; OBS’s cited documentation does not list a comparable per-video cap, but recording still uses computer resources. Loom pricing; OBS system requirements. |
| Team review, hosted library, and plan-based collaboration | Loom | Its plans list team workspace and interaction features; available features depend on plan. Loom pricing. |
| Older or unusual computer | Check compatibility and test before committing | OBS minimum requirements are not a performance guarantee. Verify Loom compatibility for your exact platform as well. |
How to record your screen with OBS
OBS is a configurable desktop recording application. Its basic workflow is to choose a source, check audio, set output options, and make a short test recording. Exact menu names can vary by operating system and OBS version; use the current build for your platform.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for recording (or the intended use closest to your workflow). OBS says the wizard considers intended use and hardware when recommending settings; treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee of smooth recording. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Add the screen or window you want to capture. In the Sources box, select + and choose a display-capture or window-capture source. On macOS, select the appropriate screen-capture source available in your OBS version. Confirm the preview shows only the intended display or application. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Check microphone and desktop audio. Speak and play a short sound while watching the audio meters. In OBS’s audio settings, select the intended devices if the defaults are not right. Default capture can include desktop audio and microphone, depending on device configuration. Mute any source you do not want recorded.
- Confirm recording output settings. Review the recording path and available output options before you begin. The suitable resolution, frame rate, and encoder depend on your machine and the work being recorded; do not assume one preset fits every computer. OBS notes that resource needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS Recording Guide; OBS system requirements.
- Make and review a short test. Select Start Recording, record a few minutes, then stop and play the file. Check framing, readable text, audio levels, dropped or missing content, and the saved file’s location. The OBS Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” OBS Project, Quick Start Guide.
- Record the session. Close private material, verify the active source and audio meters, then start recording. Stop recording when finished and inspect the saved file before deleting or sharing anything.
Will OBS run on your computer?
The OBS system requirements page, dated 2021-08-25, lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 plus the X window system or Wayland. OBS describes these as basic requirements, not a promise of usable performance. A demanding scene, high resolution or frame rate, or a particular encoder can require more resources. Check the current requirements for your operating system before installing, then test the actual scene you intend to record. OBS system requirements.
How to record your screen with Loom
- Open Loom’s recorder on a supported platform, then choose whether to capture the screen, camera, or audio. If you want a screen-and-webcam walkthrough, check the camera preview and screen selection before recording. Loom’s recorder page describes these capture choices. Loom screen recorder.
- Record your message. Keep the intended application in view and speak into the selected microphone. For a game walkthrough, check that game capture is visible and that any narration or system audio you need is being captured.
- Open the finished video to edit or share it. Loom’s PC recorder page says a link is copied after recording. Check the video and its access settings before sending the link, especially if it contains private screens or account information. Loom screen recorder.
Loom is a hosted video service, so do not assume a recording remains only on your device. A Loom SOC 3 report covers the historical period from 2021-04-01 through 2022-03-31 and describes sharing options at that time; it is not evidence of the current interface or a current audit attestation. Confirm current access controls in Loom before sharing. Loom security information.

Audio, privacy, and other practical checks
You do not need to buy a microphone to start
Both OBS and Loom support microphone or audio capture, so a separate USB microphone is optional. If you record narration often, an external mic may be an upgrade, but neither product’s cited guidance establishes a particular model as necessary.

Prevent accidental capture or exposure
- In OBS, verify the selected display or window and check which audio devices are active. Close notifications and private tabs before recording.
- In Loom, inspect the finished recording and verify who can access it before sharing its link. Avoid assuming that an old description of privacy settings matches today’s controls.
- For either tool, make a brief test with the same sources and audio setup you plan to use for the real recording.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview is black or shows the wrong content | Capture source or selected window/display | Recheck the source type and selection, then confirm the preview before recording. On macOS, use the appropriate capture source for the installed version. |
| Recording has no microphone or desktop sound | Selected audio devices and meters | Check the audio-device settings and speak or play sound while observing the meters; make another short test. |
| OBS recording stutters or the computer struggles | Encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity | Reduce workload or use the Auto-Configuration Wizard’s recommendation as a starting point, then test again. Minimum compatibility requirements do not promise performance. OBS system requirements. |
| Loom recording stops before a longer session is complete | Starter plan’s per-recording time limit | Starter lists five minutes per screen recording. Check Loom’s current plan terms if you need longer recordings. Loom pricing. |
| A recipient cannot view a Loom video, or the wrong people can | Video access settings | Open the video and verify its current sharing permissions before sending the link; do not rely on a historical interface description. |
Which recorder should you choose?
- Start with OBS for game footage, tutorials, or other recordings where you want to manage sources, audio, and output in one desktop workflow—and your computer can handle it.
- Start with Loom for a short explanation or update where a camera view and convenient hosted sharing matter more than detailed recording configuration. Its free Starter limit is important if you often record beyond five minutes.
- Test before an important session. A quick sample reveals capture, audio, performance, and sharing issues more reliably than selecting a tool based on an assumed quality advantage.
