What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the FFmpeg process. With Restart=on-failure, it attempts to restart the service after a nonzero exit and several abnormal failures. It does not restart a service stopped deliberately with systemctl stop. The systemd.service manual also documents restart delays and start-rate limiting.
This is process-level recovery. It does not prove that FFmpeg can reach YouTube, that YouTube is ingesting the stream, or that the broadcast is healthy. A service can be active while output is failing; verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room as well as on the Linux host.
Before creating the service
Prepare the stream destination
In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Enter those values in the encoder configuration. If you want RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL shown for the stream and confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports that protocol. YouTube explains encoder setup in its live-stream-with-an-encoder instructions and RTMPS setup in its RTMPS guidance.

Keep credentials private
A stream key grants the ability to send video to the associated live setup. Do not put a real key in a public example, source repository, or logs. Restrict access to the unit file and any file containing credentials; choose a suitable secret-injection method for your system.
Supply a real FFmpeg command
The command below is a unit-file template, not a tested, ready-to-run FFmpeg invocation. Replace the executable path, user, working directory, input, codec options, and destination with values appropriate to your installation and stream. The available information does not establish recommended bitrate, resolution, GOP, or codec settings; consult the documentation for your FFmpeg build and current YouTube guidance rather than treating the sample encoding arguments as a preset.
Create and start the systemd unit

Reload unit definitions, enable the service at boot, and start it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service -
Check the service state and follow its logs:
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -fLook for FFmpeg’s output and errors, then independently confirm ingest and broadcast status in Live Control Room.

Test recovery safely
Do not use systemctl stop as a restart test: an administrator-requested stop is intentionally not restarted by this policy. During a non-public test stream, induce a controlled failure that makes the FFmpeg process exit, then confirm that systemd starts a new process and that YouTube receives the stream. A new process alone is not a successful recovery.
After editing the unit, apply changes with sudo systemctl daemon-reload. To deliberately restart it, run sudo systemctl restart youtube-ffmpeg.service; this is an operator action, not proof that automatic failure recovery works.

FFmpeg exited or the service is failed
Use systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service and journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service to find the exit status and FFmpeg error. Correct the underlying issue—such as an invalid path, unavailable input, or bad destination—before repeatedly restarting.

Repeated failures stop producing restart attempts
systemd applies start-rate limiting. If the service has hit a limit, inspect the repeated failure first; blindly clearing the failure state or raising limits can mask the cause. Consult the installed systemd documentation for the behavior and controls applicable to that version.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not show a healthy stream
Confirm that the ingest URL and key are current and belong to the intended live setup. Check Live Control Room for ingest status. The service state reports on the local process, while YouTube reports on the receiving side.
RTMPS connection fails
Verify that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that the destination is the RTMPS URL YouTube currently displays for the stream. A mismatch between protocol support and destination cannot be fixed by systemd restarting the same command.

The stream resumes at a different point or does not reconnect
A service restart starts FFmpeg again; it does not guarantee resumption at the exact point of interruption. FFmpeg-level input or output recovery options operate inside the encoder and depend on the FFmpeg version and which connection failed. No version-specific reconnect flags are established here, so check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg rather than assuming an input-reconnect option repairs an output connection.
