For a quick game or app clip on Windows, try Xbox Game Bar. Use Snipping Tool for a selected region when your Windows build offers video recording, OBS Studio for a configurable setup with multiple sources and audio, and Clipchamp when you want to record your screen and camera and then edit the result. Bandicam is another option for screen, game, webcam, and capture-device recording.
Before an important capture, confirm the tool can record the area you need, select the right audio inputs, and make a short test recording. Windows tools differ in what they capture, and a screen recording does not automatically include every sound source.
Choose a screen recorder for the job
The right choice depends on what you need in the finished clip: a game or app window, a selected region, narration, system audio, a camera overlay, or editing. The options below are documented features, not results of a controlled performance comparison.

Record a game or app with Xbox Game Bar
- Open the game or app you want to capture.
- Press Windows+Alt+R to start recording.
- If you want narration, press Windows+Alt+M to toggle the microphone.
- Press Windows+Alt+R again to stop.
- Look for the MP4 in Videos, inside the Captures folder.
Before recording a full tutorial, test your specific target and listen to the result. This app- and game-oriented workflow should not be treated as a guarantee that the whole desktop or every audio source will be captured.
Record a region with Snipping Tool
Microsoft identifies Snipping Tool as a Windows 11 screen-video option, but the guide does not establish every current interface step or audio capability across Windows builds. Open Snipping Tool on your PC and confirm that its video-recording control is present before relying on it. If your recording needs system audio or the installed version does not offer the capture you need, use a different recorder and test the output.

Set up OBS Studio for a game, desktop, or webcam
OBS gives you more control than a single recording shortcut, but you must arrange the sources and confirm the audio and output before recording. The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before relying on a recording.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard if useful. It takes intended use and the computer’s resources into account.
- Add the capture source. Use Display Capture for a display, Window Capture for one window, or Game Capture for a Windows game. Add a video-capture source for a webcam or capture device.
- Check the Audio Mixer. OBS’s default setup captures desktop audio and a microphone. Watch the meters while sound is playing and speaking; choose devices manually if the intended inputs are missing or incorrect.
- Set the recording path and output options. Confirm where the file will be saved and that the output suits your recording. Start with Start Recording in the Controls dock.
- Make a short test file. Play it back and confirm the image, sound, and file location before recording a long session.
OBS troubleshooting checks
- No game or picture: confirm the capture source matches the target—game, window, or display—and that the intended source is present.
- No narration or desktop sound: watch the Audio Mixer meters during a test. Select the intended devices if the meters do not respond as expected.
- The file is hard to find: check the recording path in output settings before starting another capture.
- The recording is not right for the job: play back a short sample first and adjust sources or output settings, rather than discovering a problem after a long session.
Record and edit with Clipchamp
- Open Clipchamp’s Record & create area.
- Choose screen recording or screen-and-camera recording, then select a microphone if you want narration.
- Select the screen, window, or browser tab to capture.
- For browser-tab audio, use tab capture and enable audio sharing. The Windows app can select Edge tabs; to capture a Chrome tab, use Clipchamp in Chrome.
- Preview the recording and edit it. If you reach the maximum time shown in the app, Microsoft’s instructions advise making shorter recordings and combining them.
What to know about Bandicam
Bandicam’s product documentation describes recording desktop screens, online meetings, webcams, capture devices, and games. Treat those as vendor-described capabilities, not an independent comparison with OBS or Windows tools. Check the current Bandicam requirements for your PC and the version you plan to install; software versions and requirements can change.

Audio, camera, and capture checks before you record
- Capture area: decide whether the recording needs a game or app, one window, a region, or the whole display. A tool that records an app is not necessarily a full-desktop recorder.
- Audio: decide whether you need desktop sound, microphone narration, or both. Confirm the right inputs in the tool and verify them in a test playback.
- Camera: use OBS if you want a webcam source in a configurable scene, or Clipchamp for simultaneous screen-and-camera capture.
- After-capture work: choose Clipchamp if you want to edit the capture in the same workflow; otherwise plan to edit the file separately if needed.
- PC support: check Windows compatibility and current requirements, particularly before installing third-party software.
You do not need extra equipment to make a basic screen recording. A USB microphone can be useful for narration, and a webcam can add picture-in-picture when your PC lacks a suitable camera, but neither is required. OBS supports a webcam source, and Clipchamp supports simultaneous camera and screen capture.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The screen or game is missing: check that the selected tool supports the target capture type and that you chose the correct app, window, display, or tab.
- Recorded video has no sound: confirm which audio sources the tool and workflow support. In OBS, check Audio Mixer meters; in Clipchamp, enable audio sharing for browser-tab capture when needed.
- Your voice is missing: make sure the intended microphone is selected or enabled. In Game Bar, Windows+Alt+M toggles the microphone.
- A browser tab will not record as expected: for Clipchamp, use tab capture and enable audio sharing; use Clipchamp in Chrome to capture a Chrome tab.
- The recording ends or is not saved where expected: check the app’s displayed time limit and output or save location. For Clipchamp, shorter recordings can be combined if its displayed maximum is reached; Game Bar saves to VideosCaptures.
- You are unsure whether the result is usable: make a short test, play it back, and verify both picture and sound before recording the full session.
Cost and licensing considerations
Windows includes built-in recording routes, so a basic capture may not require a purchase. OBS offers configurable recording, while Bandicam is a third-party option; current Bandicam pricing and terms are not established here, so check its own current product information before deciding. No controlled tests establish a quality or performance winner among these tools.
