A restored network connection does not guarantee that an encoder session resumes by itself. The steps below use YouTube Live as the platform-specific example; controls and event behavior vary by service.
How to restore the stream after an outage

Check power and connectivity
Check the modem or fiber ONT and router status, then look for an outage notice from your internet provider. Confirm whether the encoder computer or hardware can reach the internet. If practical, connect the encoder by Ethernet temporarily to distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a provider outage. Avoid repeatedly restarting equipment while the provider’s service is still down.

Check the encoder and its outbound connection
If the local connection works, inspect the encoder preview, audio and video sources, and any CPU or device errors. Compare the encoder’s output with YouTube Studio’s live dashboard and stream health indicator. A healthy local preview does not establish that YouTube is receiving the feed; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing the outbound internet connection when the encoder output looks healthy (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).

Reconnect using the configured YouTube destination
Start or reconnect the encoder with the existing destination settings. For an encoder-based YouTube stream, those settings include the stream URL and stream key configured in YouTube Studio (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). If the encoder reports a key-related start error, check whether it needs the current stream key copied from Studio. Keep that key private.

Wait for YouTube Studio to show a preview or healthy stream status. Then open the stream as a viewer on a separate device and confirm that both picture and sound are actually playing.

Tell viewers what is happening
If the interruption was visible, post a brief status update on the stream page or the school’s usual communication channel. A slate can also explain that the feed is being restored and where to find updates. Whether the same event page resumes cleanly depends on the service and configuration; verify it rather than promising a seamless continuation.

Record the incident
Note when the outage began and ended, the provider’s status, equipment restarted, encoder messages, any stream-key changes, and when viewers regained playback. These notes help the school identify what to check first next time.

- Provider or WAN: The modem or ONT has no service, or the provider reports an outage.
- Local network: The provider connection is available, but the router, Wi-Fi, or cable path prevents the encoder from reaching the internet.
- Encoder: The computer or hardware is online, but the encoder has an error, missing source, or unhealthy output.
- Platform ingest: The encoder preview looks right, but the platform dashboard does not show a healthy incoming feed.
- Viewer playback: The dashboard appears healthy, but a separate viewer device cannot play the stream or hear audio.
Confirm each stage before changing settings. This narrows the fault without assuming that reconnecting the router will restart the encoder or restore the viewer’s playback.

Set up a tested backup internet path
A dual-WAN router can switch from a primary connection to a secondary one after detecting a failure. A cellular connection is one possible backup, but it requires compatible equipment, a working data plan, usable local signal, and a data allowance appropriate for continuous video. Check whether the router detects an actual loss of internet access, not only a disconnected cable, and whether it needs configuration to fail back to the primary connection. ASUS documents dual-WAN failover and failback behavior in its Dual WAN introduction and setup; Ubiquiti’s 5G and LTE backup guidance covers backup modes and data-limit management.

Before relying on a backup path, check its capacity against the stream’s bitrate and the expected duration. Also establish whether the encoder will keep its session through a network change or will need to reconnect. A backup connection restores a route to the internet; it does not, by itself, prove that the stream is live again.
Match YouTube primary and backup settings
If using YouTube’s primary and backup stream inputs, keep their settings aligned. YouTube’s error guidance says the streams must match settings such as resolution and codec for failover to work properly (YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages). Keep a private configuration sheet for the encoder and backup input, and test the arrangement before an important school broadcast.

Choose an appropriate dead-air fallback
A platform or streaming service may offer a fallback video during a disconnection. For example, Restream documents disconnect protection that can play a selected video, with 5-, 15-, or 30-minute options on eligible plans; confirm current availability and limits in its disconnect protection instructions. A fallback message or still image should be suitable for students and make clear that live instruction is not continuing while the feed is disconnected.
Plan carefully for long-running channels
Continuous-stream restart behavior depends on the service. Livestream’s guidance for 24/7 channels recommends regular restarts and describes an automatic restart option for Producer (Can I Produce a 24/7 Stream?). Check the platform’s current duration limits, archive behavior, and restart recommendations before adopting a schedule for another service.
Keep a control-station checklist
- Provider support details and the order for checking network equipment.
- Who owns the encoder login and YouTube Studio access.
- The approved destination and how to reconnect the encoder.
- How to confirm both video and audio on a separate viewer device.
- Who communicates with students, families, or staff during an interruption.
Store credentials and stream keys securely; do not put them in a publicly visible checklist.
