If you can still access the email address on your PlayStation account, start with PlayStation Account Management: choose Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account, enter your sign-in email, and follow the secure link PlayStation sends. If someone changed your sign-in details—or you cannot use the email, passkey, phone, or backup code needed to sign in—contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant. If your email account may also be compromised, secure it before changing your PlayStation sign-in method.
Choose the recovery route that matches what you can still access
| What you can access | What to do |
|---|---|
| The email address on the PlayStation account | Use Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account in Account Management and follow the secure email link. |
| A passkey registered on another device | Sign in on that device; if your phone was lost, use the available registered device to register a replacement passkey. |
| A 2-step verification backup code | Choose Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code and enter an unused code. |
| No usable email, registered passkey device, phone, or backup code—or account details changed without permission | Contact PlayStation Support through the Online Assistant. |
These steps come from PlayStation’s US support instructions; available support routes may differ by region. The pages do not promise a support response time or publish one universal proof-of-ownership checklist.
Recover access by email
- Open PlayStation Account Management and select Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account.
- Enter the sign-in ID—the email address associated with the account—and submit the request.
- Open the secure link PlayStation emails you, complete the requested information, and choose a new password.
The message may take a few minutes to arrive. If it is missing, check spam or junk mail. If you cannot open the linked email account, use the Online Assistant rather than repeatedly requesting a link you cannot receive. See PlayStation’s account recovery guide.
If you received an account-change email you did not expect
First check whether the message says PlayStation initiated the change. PlayStation warns that an email that does not state this may indicate someone else is trying to access the account. If the change was not yours, change the password for the email account linked to PlayStation before trying to change the PlayStation sign-in method. If you cannot change the email password, contact that email provider; if you cannot change the PlayStation sign-in method, contact PlayStation Support. Follow PlayStation’s guidance for phished or compromised accounts and unauthorized charges.

When passkeys or 2-step verification are blocking sign-in
Passkey available on another device
If the phone holding your passkey is lost but the same verification method is registered on another device, PlayStation says you can sign in on that device and register a new passkey. If no registered device can authenticate you, contact the Online Assistant.
Passkey trouble on a device
PlayStation’s passkey instructions say to select Can’t Sign In with Passkey and use email or a QR code to sign in. The support page also flags possible problems with Remote Play on Mac, outdated browsers, and some Android/Windows combinations. It notes that some hardware security keys may have issues and suggests considering synced passkeys on mobile devices; a hardware key is not a guaranteed workaround. PlayStation’s stated compatibility guidance covers PS5, PS4, its website and app, and Remote Play for Mac, as well as most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later. These are PlayStation’s published compatibility notes, not independent testing. See PlayStation passkey instructions.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
2-step verification code unavailable
PlayStation provides 10 single-use backup codes. At the code prompt, select Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code and enter one you have not used. PlayStation says a sign-in verification code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If you have no unused backup code, cannot access the registered phone or number, or receive unexpected verification prompts and cannot change your sign-in method, PlayStation says Support must restore access. See the recovery guide.

Secure the account after regaining access
- Protect the linked email. If it may have been exposed, change its password to a unique one. A password manager can help generate and store unique passwords, but it is not an account-recovery service.
- Review account access and details. Check the security settings, registered passkeys, 2-step verification, and account details. If you change the sign-in ID, PlayStation says the account is signed out of all devices. Do not change the email destination until you have confirmed you can access it.
- Review sessions, consoles, and payment exposure. PlayStation’s instructions for a stolen console say to sign out of all devices, deactivate consoles, and consider removing payment methods. Those steps are written for a stolen-console case, not as a required sequence for every account takeover; use them to assess and reduce access or purchase risk in your circumstances.
- Choose a stronger sign-in method. PlayStation supports passkeys and 2-step verification using SMS or an authenticator app. Store any backup codes somewhere secure that remains accessible if your phone is lost. PlayStation’s security advice discusses passkeys and 2-step verification; neither choice is universally best for every user.
- Decide how to protect Store checkout. You can consider enabling Require Password at Checkout to guard purchases. PlayStation says this setting is not compatible with passkeys, so choose the setup that fits your preferred sign-in and purchase protections.
Reduce the chance of another takeover
- Do not share account details. PlayStation’s security guidance states: “Sharing your account details compromises the security of your account.” Read its security best practices.
- Do not enter your credentials on sites promising free virtual currency, and be wary of direct messages claiming your account was reported or offering beta access. PlayStation warns that such messages may seek credentials or lead to malicious sign-in pages.
- Do not scan QR codes sent by someone claiming they will restore your account. Use PlayStation’s official support pages and sign-in flows instead.
- Avoid signing in on shared devices when possible. If you must, do not save your credentials and sign out when finished.
