After access is restored, set a unique password and add Blizzard’s Authenticator; Blizzard also says a passkey can provide additional protection.
Do not pay anyone who claims to recover the account for you, and do not follow recovery links in unsolicited email or in-game messages. Navigate to Blizzard or Battle.net yourself, because phishing messages can be designed to steal the replacement credentials you are creating.

- Open Blizzard’s official Account Recovery service.
- Use the recovery option that describes your problem.
- Secure the computer before opening a support ticket.
- Submit the ticket through Blizzard and describe every unauthorized change and missing item.
- Once you are back in, replace the password and add stronger sign-in protection.
Doing these steps out of order can let an attacker take the account again. For example, changing a password on an infected computer can expose the new password to a keylogger.

Choose the recovery route that matches your problem
The live recovery portal presents several paths. Match your situation to the closest official option instead of using an outside “recovery” service.

Blizzard’s support labels include the exact phrases “Account compromised,” “All items missing,” and “Password changed.” Using the matching label makes it clearer which problem you are reporting.
Step 1: Open the official Account Recovery page
Type Blizzard’s or Battle.net’s address into your browser or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not click a recovery link delivered in an unexpected email, direct message, or in-game whisper. A convincing message can lead to a fake login page that captures your email address, password, or authenticator code.

The recovery portal is the correct first stop even if you are unsure whether the attacker changed the email address, password, or authenticator. It includes separate options for an authenticator issue and a locked account, so you do not need to guess which support category a stranger recommends.
Step 2: Reset the password or recover the account email
If you still control the registered email
Choose the password-reset option and complete the instructions sent by Blizzard. Create a new password that is not used for your email, other games, or any other service. A reused password can allow an attacker who obtained credentials elsewhere to return immediately.
If you forgot the registered email
Blizzard says the recovery tool can help recover the email address when phone notifications were already set up on the account. Use that route first. If you forgot the security question or cannot locate the account, Blizzard directs users to Customer Support.

If an authenticator blocks sign-in
Use the portal’s authenticator-removal path. Do not send authenticator codes, passwords, or identity documents to someone who contacts you privately and promises a faster removal. The official process is the only recovery path described by Blizzard for this situation.

Step 3: Secure the computer before filing a ticket
Blizzard explicitly places computer security before the support ticket. Assume the machine may be involved if the attacker knew a newly entered password, if the compromise returned after a reset, or if you installed an addon or program shortly before losing access.
- Run a complete security scan. Scan for malware, keyloggers, and viruses. Allow the security software to quarantine or remove anything it identifies, then restart if it requests one.
- Update the browser and security software. Blizzard advises keeping both current. A browser or security tool that has not been updated may miss newer threats.
- Review recent addon activity. If you suspect a malicious player-made addon, stop using it, run the security scan, and change the account password immediately after the computer is clean.
- Do not run an executable to install an addon. Blizzard advises downloading addons only from trusted sites and warns against running an executable during addon installation.
- Use a clean device if necessary. If the scan cannot clean the computer or you cannot trust the result, avoid entering replacement credentials there until the problem is resolved.
Do not skip this stage merely because the password reset succeeded. A clean account can be stolen again if the device is still recording keystrokes.
Step 4: Submit a Blizzard support ticket
Once the computer is secured, open Blizzard’s support flow and explain that the Battle.net account was compromised. Include the specific facts support needs to understand the incident:
- Which official problem label fits: “Account compromised,” “Password changed,” or “All items missing.”
- What you can still access and what you cannot.
- Any unauthorized changes you observed.
- Which characters, currencies, equipment, or other in-game items appear to be missing.
- Whether the account is locked or an authenticator is preventing sign-in.
- That you have scanned and secured the computer before submitting the ticket.
Keep the description factual and chronological. State what you noticed, when you noticed it, and which recovery steps you already completed. Do not send extra passwords or authenticator codes in a ticket unless Blizzard’s own form specifically requests information through its secure process.
Blizzard says support reviews the case and restores access, but its cited guidance does not promise a response time, a particular restoration scope, or a successful outcome for every account. It also does not guarantee that every missing item will be returned. The ticket is still the correct route for unauthorized changes and missing items; a person claiming to guarantee restoration is not an alternative to Blizzard support.

Step 5: Finish securing the account after access returns
Create a unique, strong password
Use a password that has never been used on another site. Blizzard recommends a strong combination of numbers, letters, and symbols. Do not recycle the password from the email account associated with Battle.net, because control of that email can undermine the game-account reset.
Add the Battle.net Authenticator
Blizzard recommends adding its Authenticator after recovery. Two-step verification means a stolen password alone is less useful to an attacker. Follow the setup instructions inside the official Battle.net account tools, and keep the recovery information available so you can use the supported recovery path if the authenticator itself becomes inaccessible.
Enable phone notifications when available
Blizzard says phone notifications may help recover access if there is a problem with the authenticator. Configure them through the account’s official security settings rather than through a link in a message.
Consider a passkey
Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance says a passkey can add further protection. A passkey is an additional sign-in method; it does not replace the need to clean an infected computer or to use a unique password where Blizzard still requires one.
What commonly exposes World of Warcraft accounts
Blizzard identifies several recurring ways account information is obtained. Treat them as separate risks, because fixing one does not fix the others.
Reused email and password combinations
If the same credentials were used on another site and that site was breached, an attacker can try them against Battle.net. Use a different password for Battle.net and for the email account that receives recovery messages.

Phishing websites and messages
Phishing is an attempt to impersonate Blizzard to obtain login details or infect a computer. A message may claim that your account will be suspended, offer a reward, or ask you to “verify” immediately. Inspect the destination before entering anything. Blizzard advises not clicking links that do not lead to blizzard.com or battle.net.
When a message seems important, close it and navigate to the official site yourself. Check the account there instead of using the message’s button or embedded address.
Malicious websites and infected addons
Unofficial download pages can bundle malware with an addon or ask you to run an executable. Blizzard recommends trusted addon sources, current browser and security software, and a scan for malware, keyloggers, and viruses when compromise is suspected.
Gold sellers and leveling services
Blizzard lists non-Blizzard gold sellers and leveling services as account-exposure risks. Avoid giving any service your login information, even when it promises faster progression or a discount. The service can expose the credentials, and account activity from another location can make a later compromise harder to untangle.
Account sharing and other people’s computers
Do not share login information and do not log in on another person’s computer. You cannot know whether that computer stores passwords, contains a keylogger, or will be used by someone else later.

“All items missing” is an official support problem label, not proof that restoration is automatic. List the missing items and the other changes in the same compromised-account ticket so support can review the incident as one case.

Do not delete characters, discard remaining items, or repeatedly change account details while waiting unless Blizzard instructs you to do so. Preserve the facts you can observe: screenshots, dates, character names, and the account notifications you received can help you describe what changed. Blizzard’s published guidance does not specify which evidence it will request, which items it will restore, or how long review will take, so avoid promises made by unofficial helpers.
Recovery scams to avoid
Urgent account problems attract scammers because a worried player may hand over information quickly. Warning signs include:
- A person who contacts you first and claims to work for Blizzard but asks for your password or authenticator code.
- A promise of guaranteed item restoration, instant unlocks, or a fixed response time in exchange for money.
- A request to install remote-access software or an “account checker.”
- A recovery link whose domain is not blizzard.com or battle.net.
- Instructions to move the conversation to a private chat so Blizzard cannot see it.
End the conversation and use the official Account Recovery and support pages. Blizzard’s own guidance does not endorse third-party recovery services or guarantee a particular result.
Troubleshooting common recovery situations
The password reset email never arrives
Confirm that you entered the email associated with the Battle.net account and check spam or filtered folders. If you no longer know the registered email and had phone notifications enabled, use the recovery tool’s email-recovery option. If you cannot answer the security question or locate the account, go to Customer Support.
The attacker changed the email and password
Use the “Account compromised” route instead of repeatedly attempting logins. Secure the computer first, then tell Blizzard in the ticket that both credentials changed and describe any other unauthorized activity.
The account is locked
Select the portal’s account-unlock option. After the unlock process, complete the computer scan and password change before returning to the game.
The authenticator is unavailable
Choose the official authenticator-removal option. After you regain access, add the Authenticator again and consider a passkey. Phone notifications may help with authenticator-related recovery when they were configured beforehand.
You can sign in, but characters or items are missing
Do not assume that a successful login means the incident is over. Scan the computer, change the password, add the Authenticator, and submit a ticket using “All items missing” or “Account compromised,” listing the unauthorized changes and missing items.
The account is compromised again after a reset
Stop entering credentials on the affected computer until a security scan has completed. Recheck for malware, keyloggers, viruses, and suspicious addons; update the browser and security software; then change the password from a clean device and submit or update the Blizzard ticket.
