If a PS5 game save is missing or appears corrupted, first check for another usable copy in PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB system backup. Don’t reset the console or restore a backup until you understand what data the action will erase. Sony documents ways to download cloud saves, restore system backups and repair console storage, but none guarantees recovery when no usable copy exists.
Before troubleshooting, protect the save that remains
A save that looks wrong may still be recoverable from another copy. Before deleting saved data, reinstalling a game, restoring a system backup or resetting the PS5, check whether cloud storage or a previously created USB backup contains the save you need.
Be especially careful with a USB system-backup restore: PlayStation Support warns that restoring it erases all data currently saved on the console, and erased data cannot be restored. It is not a harmless way to check whether a backup contains a particular save. PlayStation’s backup and restore guide explains what the process includes and how to restore it.
Check PlayStation Plus cloud storage
If you have a cloud copy, download it to the console using the current on-screen options for saved data and cloud storage. Sony’s guide covers copying and downloading PS5 saved data; menu wording can change with system software, so follow the labels shown on your console. PlayStation Plus cloud storage guidance also explains automatic syncing.

Make future automatic syncing more reliable
Sony says a PS5 can automatically sync saved data when a game closes or the console enters Rest Mode. For that to work, enable Auto-Sync under Saved Data and Game/App Settings and allow the console to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode. If those settings were disabled, or the console could not connect, a recent save may not have reached cloud storage.
Fix a cloud-sync error when a save will not upload or download
For error CE-118851-4, PlayStation’s specific instructions are to choose “Try Again” on the Sync Status screen. If the issue affects multiple games, turn Enable Auto-Sync off and then back on. If affected games show “Synced” but the error returns after restarting, Sony suggests disabling automatic login. If the problem persists, contact PlayStation Support. These steps apply to the cited error, not every missing or corrupted save. Sony’s CE-118851-4 troubleshooting page has the full instructions.
Sony’s error-code index also lists CE-122154-5 as a PS5 error in which saved data cannot sync with Cloud Storage. Use the support instructions for the exact code you see; the detailed steps above are for CE-118851-4. View PlayStation’s PS5 error-code index.

Try Safe Mode’s non-destructive storage repair
If the console is having storage issues or does not start properly, Sony provides a Safe Mode option called Repair Console Storage. PlayStation says this option does not erase data. To enter Safe Mode, turn off the PS5, then press and hold the power button and release it after the second beep; connect the controller by USB and choose Repair Console Storage from the menu. Follow the current prompts on screen. Sony’s Safe Mode guide explains the available options.
Do not confuse storage repair with Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): Sony says those reset options delete user data. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database, but Sony does not describe it as a way to restore a missing game save.

A PS5 system backup can include saved data. Sony’s restore process requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive; not every USB device works. A USB drive formatted as extended storage for PS5 games is different and cannot hold this system backup. Do not turn off the console during backup or restore. If restoring to another PS5, the backup is linked to the PlayStation account used to create it. See PlayStation’s backup and restore guide for the current steps and options.

Only proceed if you accept that the restore erases all data currently on the console. If you are unsure what the backup contains or whether it is the right one, do not use it as a test.
What if there is no usable copy?
The documented recovery routes are a cloud copy, a USB system backup and non-destructive console-storage repair. Sony’s guidance does not provide a guaranteed way to reconstruct a corrupted or deleted save when none of those routes contains a usable copy. Avoid assuming that reinstalling a game will restore its save: game installation and saved data are separate, and the support procedures above do not promise save recovery through a reinstall.
