What a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code does
A Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code is stored-value credit for Steam. After successful redemption, its value is added to the Steam Wallet belonging to the account currently signed in. You can then spend that wallet balance on eligible Steam purchases, including games, in-game items, software, and hardware offered through Steam.

The code is not a discount voucher and does not create a separate balance that can be selected at checkout. The account receiving the credit is determined by the login session on the redemption page. Check the account name before submitting if several people use the same computer.

Steam’s redemption page states: “You must be logged in to a steam account to redeem Steam Wallet codes.”
Steam also says that “Steam Gift Cards and Wallet Codes will be converted to the currency of your Steam Wallet upon redemption, regardless of where they were purchased.” That conversion happens as part of redemption; the amount displayed in your wallet after completion is the amount available for Steam purchases in that wallet currency.
What you need before entering the code
- The intended Steam account: Have the correct account credentials ready and confirm that you are signed in to it.
- The complete code: Keep every letter and number visible. Do not discard or damage the card until the balance is confirmed.
- Purchase evidence: For a retail card, retain the entire card and the matching retail receipt. Steam Support may request a clear photo or scan of both.
- A working redemption page: Use Steam’s official page named Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code, rather than entering the code into a message, form, or website sent by another person.
- Country and currency awareness: Steam handles currency conversion at redemption, but local laws, regional availability, and a retailer’s activation rules can still affect a purchase.
If the code is printed on a receipt rather than on a card or digital delivery, keep that receipt exactly as issued. Steam Support says it cannot assist with codes printed directly on receipts; the retailer must handle those cases.

- Sign in to the receiving account. Open Steam and verify the username or profile you intend to credit. Signing in is mandatory; Steam will not redeem a Wallet Code while you are logged out.
- Open the official redemption page. Choose Steam’s Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page. If you reached it from a search result, check that you are still on Steam’s official service before typing the code.
- Enter the code in the correct field. Type the characters into the field labeled Steam Wallet Code. Enter the code exactly as shown, including every letter and number. Avoid adding spaces or substituting a similar-looking character.
- Select Continue. Submit the code using the page’s Continue button. Steam will validate the code and show the result for the signed-in wallet.
- Confirm the credited balance. Check that the Steam Wallet balance now reflects the credited value in the wallet’s currency. Keep the card and receipt until this balance check is complete.
If the balance has not changed, do not repeatedly submit random variations of the code. First compare each character with the printed or delivered code, then use the troubleshooting paths below.

Physical cards versus digital Steam Gift Cards
Steam has offered two delivery routes. A physical retail card is purchased in a store and normally requires the retailer’s activation process. A digital Steam Gift Card is delivered through Steam’s own digital-gift service. Both routes ultimately provide value for a Steam Wallet, but the evidence available to you and the support path differ.

Changes to physical-card availability
Steam Support says retail physical gift cards are available only for a limited time and will not be restocked as stores sell out. Steam expects retailers to be out of physical-card stock by the end of 2026. Existing physical cards remain usable subject to local laws, so an already purchased card is not automatically invalid merely because stores stop replenishing inventory.
Steam introduced retail Steam Gift Cards in 2012 and its digital gift-card program in 2017, according to Steam Support’s 2026 information. If you need a card after local retail stock disappears, Steam’s continuing digital-gift option is the route Steam identifies as available through its own service.
Currency, country, and region questions
Can a card bought in another country be redeemed?
Steam’s stated policy is that Steam Gift Cards and Wallet Codes are converted to the currency of your Steam Wallet upon redemption, regardless of where they were purchased. That means the purchase country alone does not determine the currency that appears in the wallet. The account’s wallet currency is the one Steam uses for the conversion.

“Regardless of where they were purchased” does not remove every regional consideration. Local laws can govern sale or use, retailers may apply country-specific activation procedures, and a code can fail if it was never activated. Treat the policy as Steam’s currency-conversion rule, not as a promise that every retail transaction is available in every jurisdiction.
What should you check before buying abroad?
- Ask the seller whether the card is activated at checkout and whether the seller serves your country.
- Confirm the denomination and preserve the receipt showing that purchase.
- Make sure the recipient can sign in to the wallet that should receive the credit.
- Use Steam’s conversion statement as the basis for currency expectations, while checking local restrictions that apply where you live.
Do not estimate the final wallet amount from a foreign-currency face value alone. Steam performs the conversion at redemption, and the wallet display after submission is the authoritative credited amount for that account.
Why a Steam code may not work
A character was entered incorrectly
A mistyped character is one of the most common failure points. Steam Support specifically advises checking characters that can look alike:
- 0 versus Q, O, or D
- 1 versus I
- O versus 0, Q, or D
- B versus 8
- G versus 6
Read the code from the original card or delivery message under good lighting. Compare one character at a time, and preserve the original order. If the card uses a scratch-off panel, remove it carefully so no printed character is lost.

The retailer has not activated the card
A retailer may take several hours to activate a purchased code. If the code was bought recently, wait for that activation window to pass before assuming the code is defective. Keep the card and receipt during the wait; they establish where and when the code was purchased.
If the code still fails after the retailer’s activation period, contact Steam Support with a clear photo or scan of the entire back of the card and the matching retail receipt. Include all edges and printed details so Support can read the code and purchase evidence. Do not send a cropped image that omits the receipt or card information.
The code is printed directly on a receipt
Steam Support says it cannot assist with codes printed directly on receipts. Take that issue back to the retailer that issued the receipt. The retailer is responsible for checking its point-of-sale record and correcting an activation or issuance problem in this case.

The code is from a physical card that is no longer sold
Physical retail cards are being phased out as stores sell through existing inventory, with Steam expecting retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026. That supply change does not by itself cancel a card you already purchased. Use the normal redemption process, retain proof of purchase, and follow the activation-support route if the code is rejected.

The wallet balance is not what you expected
First check the wallet currency shown after redemption. Steam converts the value at redemption, so a foreign face value will not necessarily appear as the same number in your local currency. Also verify that you redeemed while signed in to the intended account; the credit follows that login session.

Good documentation shortens the support process and protects you from losing the only proof of purchase. Assemble these items before contacting anyone:
- The full physical card, including the back and any scratch-off area.
- A clear image or scan in which every printed detail is readable.
- The matching retail receipt showing the purchase.
- The exact error message displayed on Steam’s redemption page.
- The date you bought the card and the approximate time you first attempted redemption.
- The Steam account you used, without sharing your password or login codes.
Never publish the complete Wallet Code in a public forum or send it to an unknown person claiming to be support. A code is valuable until it has been successfully credited, so treat its characters like cash.
Steam Gift Card scams and safe handling
Steam Support warns that scammers may impersonate agencies such as the IRS and pressure victims to buy gift cards and disclose the codes. A demand for Steam cards as payment for taxes, bail, debts, delivery charges, prizes, or winnings is a strong scam signal. Government agencies, legitimate companies, and real support representatives do not need you to read a Wallet Code to a stranger to settle one of those demands.
Steam Support’s safety guidance is direct: “Never give out a Steam Wallet Gift Card to a person you do not know.”
- Buy from a retailer or Steam’s own digital-gift service that you selected yourself.
- Do not send a code or photograph of the code to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
- Do not let a caller rush you into buying several cards or removing protective packaging.
- Keep the receipt and card private until the intended account shows the credit.
- If a person claims to be an authority and requests gift-card payment, end the conversation and contact that organization through a number or website you found independently.
Once another person has the complete code, you may not be able to recover its value. Steam’s warning is therefore relevant before purchase, during storage, and while troubleshooting.
A practical redemption checklist
Before submission
- Correct Steam account is signed in.
- Official Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page is open.
- Code is fully visible and readable.
- Receipt and card are retained if the code came from a store.
- Country, local-law, and retailer-activation considerations have been checked.
After selecting Continue
- Read the result shown by Steam rather than closing the page immediately.
- Confirm the wallet balance and its currency.
- Store the receipt until the credited amount is visible.
- If redemption fails, check look-alike characters before trying again.
- After the retailer activation window, provide Steam Support with the complete card image and matching receipt when requested.
Following this order keeps the credit on the intended account, gives Steam or the retailer the evidence needed for a failed transaction, and avoids exposing the code to scammers.
