A Steam key is redeemed in the Steam client with + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam…; after activation, the game appears in your Steam Library and installs on Steam Deck like any other Steam title. A standalone download follows a different route: install it in Desktop Mode, add its executable as a non-Steam game, and launch the shortcut from Gaming Mode. Steam Deck can run non-Steam games through Proton, but compatibility, launchers, logins and anti-cheat requirements vary by title.
Start by identifying what Humble actually sold you
Humble purchase pages can contain different kinds of entitlements. The label determines the installation process, where updates come from and whether Steam treats the game as part of your account library. Do not enter a standalone download into Steam’s key-activation form, and do not expect a Steam key to produce a separate installer.

Steam key
A Steam entitlement supplies a product code intended for registration on Steam. Once the code is accepted, Steam associates the game with the account you used during activation. The title then appears in that account’s Library, where Steam Deck uses the normal install, update and launch controls.

Standalone download
A standalone entitlement supplies files or an installer from Humble or the publisher rather than a Steam registration. You install those files yourself and add the game’s executable to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut. The shortcut gives you a convenient entry in the Deck interface, but it does not convert the purchase into a Steam-owned title.

Platform and region restrictions
Read the entitlement wording for the required platform and region before redeeming anything. Steam rejects keys intended for another platform, and a code may be restricted to a particular geographic region. If the page does not say Steam, treat it as a non-Steam entitlement until the seller’s instructions establish otherwise.
Redeem a Humble Steam key
You can perform the redemption on the Deck itself or on another computer signed in to the same Steam account. The important part is using the Steam client and selecting the product-activation command, not merely adding a shortcut.
- Open the Humble purchase page. Sign in to the Humble account that made the purchase, open your library or order details, and locate the specific game. Reveal the code only when you are ready to register it. Confirm that the entitlement says it is for Steam and note any region or edition wording.
- Sign in to the intended Steam account. Use the account that should permanently own the game. A product code is tied to the account that successfully registers it; choosing a different account is not a temporary guest step.
- Open Steam’s activation dialog. In the Steam client, choose + Add a Game at the lower left, then select Activate a Product on Steam…. Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Enter the code exactly as shown. Preserve letters, numbers and hyphens. If the code is accepted, Steam confirms the registration and adds the title to the account’s Library.
- Record the entitlement. Keep the Humble order record and key information in a secure place. Steam may request key details when investigating account ownership. Digital keys that were not supplied in physical packaging have limitations as ownership evidence, so the key record should supplement—not replace—your account security and purchase history.
Activation is complete when Steam shows the game in the account’s Library. Closing the Humble page or installing the game is not required for the registration itself.
Install the activated game in SteamOS Gaming Mode
- Open Library on the Deck. Switch to Gaming Mode if you are in the desktop environment, then open the Steam Library.
- Select the newly activated title. The game should be listed under the Steam account used in the previous section. If it is missing, verify that the Deck is online and that the active Steam account is the one that redeemed the code.
- Choose Install. Select the internal drive or an inserted microSD card when Steam asks for a location. Steam downloads the files and creates the normal library entry.
- Wait for shader and compatibility setup. SteamOS may use Proton to run a Windows game. The first launch can take longer while the compatibility layer and game components are prepared.
- Launch and complete any required sign-in. Some titles open a separate publisher launcher or request an online account. Those requirements belong to the game and can affect whether it is practical to play on Deck.
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ confirms that non-Steam games can run through Proton, but that statement is not a guarantee for every title. Proton behavior, controller support, launcher integration and anti-cheat configuration are game-specific. A game that installs successfully may still need additional sign-in steps or may fail at launch if its launcher or anti-cheat system is not compatible.
Install a standalone Humble build as a non-Steam game
Use this route when the Humble page provides an installer or game files instead of a Steam key. The installation occurs in Desktop Mode because you need to work with the supplied files and the desktop Steam client.
- Switch to Desktop Mode. In Gaming Mode, open Steam → Power → Switch to Desktop. The Deck changes to the SteamOS desktop environment.
- Download or locate the supplied build. Use the Humble purchase page or the publisher’s delivery method described with the entitlement. Keep the installer or game folder in a location you can find again; the exact file name and format depend on the game.
- Install the game. Run the supplied installer or follow its included installation instructions. A standalone build is managed by its own installer, launcher or publisher process rather than by Steam’s library installer.
- Open the desktop Steam client. In Steam, select Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. Browse to the game’s executable, select it and confirm the addition.
- Check the shortcut’s compatibility settings when necessary. Return to the shortcut’s Steam properties and select a Proton compatibility tool if the game requires Windows compatibility. The available choice and the result depend on the title.
- Return to Gaming Mode. Use the desktop’s Steam controls to switch back, then find the shortcut under the non-Steam section of your Library.
- Launch the shortcut. Steam starts the executable you selected. If the game has a separate launcher, that launcher may still require its own login or configuration.
The shortcut is only a launcher entry. Steam’s own support description says that adding a non-Steam game adds a shortcut to the Steam client; it does not provide Steam downloads or updates for that game, and it cannot serve as proof that your Steam account owns the title.

Do you need a physical keyboard and mouse?
No. The Deck’s trackpads and on-screen keyboard can be enough for entering a key, navigating the Steam client and performing straightforward Desktop Mode tasks. A physical keyboard and mouse are optional accessories, not prerequisites for redemption.

They can nevertheless make Desktop Mode more comfortable when an installer has many fields, a launcher requires detailed text input, or you need precise pointer control. If you connect them, use them for convenience rather than assuming they change compatibility; they do not make an unsupported launcher or anti-cheat system work.
Troubleshooting redemption problems
Steam says the product code is invalid
- Return to the Humble purchase page and confirm that the entitlement is specifically a Steam key, not a key for another store or a standalone download.
- Check the region and edition wording. A code restricted to a different region may not register on your account.
- Enter the code through + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam…, not in a game’s separate launcher.
- Copy the characters carefully and avoid adding spaces before or after the code.
Steam states that keys intended for another platform are not accepted as Steam registrations. If the entitlement is not for Steam, use its supplied standalone installation route instead.

Steam says the code is a duplicate or already used
A duplicate code is already tied to a Steam account and cannot be registered again. Check every Steam account you control, including an account that may have been used during an earlier redemption. If you bought the key from someone else, contact the seller or Humble with the order record; do not keep retrying the same code on new accounts.
The game does not appear after activation
- Confirm that the Deck is signed in to the same Steam account that accepted the code.
- Restart the Steam client or refresh the Library while online.
- Search the Library by the game’s exact title; some editions use a different name from the Humble listing.
If activation succeeded but the title remains absent, preserve the confirmation message and key record before contacting Steam Support.
The standalone shortcut will not launch
- Verify that the shortcut points to the game’s actual executable rather than the installer or an unrelated launcher file.
- In the shortcut’s properties, try the Proton compatibility option required by the game’s Windows build.
- Check whether the game requires a publisher login, an additional launcher or an online service.
- Consider anti-cheat requirements. Proton compatibility is title-specific, and an anti-cheat system can block a game even when the files installed correctly.
These checks address the common boundary between installation and playability: adding a shortcut proves only that Steam can attempt to start the selected file.

The game starts but controls do not work correctly
Controller behavior can differ between Steam-managed titles and non-Steam shortcuts. For a shortcut, confirm that Steam is launching the intended executable and review the game’s controller configuration from the shortcut’s Library page. A launcher that appears first may need its own input selection before the game receives Deck controls.
The standalone game has no updates
This is expected. A non-Steam shortcut does not grant Steam’s update service. Use the game’s own updater, launcher or publisher download process, and keep track of where the installed files reside so that an update does not create a second copy.

Steam activation and non-Steam shortcuts are not interchangeable. A registered Steam key becomes part of the Steam account’s purchase history and library. A standalone installation remains an independently delivered build, even when Steam is used to provide the launch button.

A Steam-key game can be reinstalled from the Steam Library after signing in. A standalone game generally requires you to retain its installer, download it again through the original delivery channel or use the publisher’s process. The shortcut itself does not back up the installer and does not create a Steam license.
It also matters for updates. Steam can update a game that is present as a Steam library title when the publisher distributes updates through Steam. For a standalone build, updates remain the responsibility of the game’s installer, launcher or publisher. Do not remove the original standalone files until you know how that title supplies future updates.
A practical decision checklist
- Entitlement: Does the Humble page explicitly say Steam key, or does it provide a standalone download?
- Account: Are you signed in to the Steam account that should permanently own the game?
- Region: Is the code or build valid for your country or region?
- Route: Steam key means product activation and a normal Library install; standalone means Desktop Mode installation and a non-Steam shortcut.
- Input: Can you use the Deck trackpad and on-screen keyboard, or would a physical keyboard and mouse make Desktop Mode easier?
- Compatibility: Does the title rely on a launcher, separate login or anti-cheat system that may limit Proton play?
- Records: Have you kept the order confirmation and key information securely?
- Updates: Do you know whether Steam or the game’s own installer will deliver future updates?
Following the entitlement label first prevents the most serious mistake: trying to redeem a standalone build as a Steam code or expecting a non-Steam shortcut to behave like a Steam purchase. Once the route is correct, the Deck’s built-in Steam client, Desktop Mode and Proton support provide the tools needed to install and launch the game.
