To reduce buffering on a 24/7 mantra stream, first find out whether the problem is at the YouTube ingest or on individual viewers’ connections. Then match your encoder settings to the chosen video format, leave upload-bandwidth headroom, and use YouTube’s normal latency unless real-time interaction is important. These steps reduce common causes of interruptions, but cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback for every viewer.
First identify where buffering starts
Buffering can affect the broadcast as it reaches YouTube, or it can happen later on a viewer’s network or device. Changing the encoder bitrate helps only when the broadcast’s outgoing feed is part of the problem.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and any encoder messages while the stream is running. An unhealthy ingest or warnings point toward the encoder, settings, or broadcaster’s connection.
- Compare reports. Ask whether multiple viewers are affected, and whether they are watching on different networks and devices. If the stream health is good and only one viewer reports buffering, investigate that viewer’s connection or playback setup before changing your bitrate.
- Check at different times. A connection can vary with congestion and brief interruptions. A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of stable upload capacity for a continuous stream.
YouTube’s stream-health and encoder guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Match encoder settings to your stream
Do not raise bitrate as a general-purpose fix. Choose the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use; a bitrate that exceeds what your connection can sustain can destabilize the outgoing stream. YouTube’s current H.264 examples include:

| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 bitrate example |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are examples, not universal targets. Consult YouTube’s current encoder table for your codec and exact format. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 support for RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends constant bitrate. Its encoder guidance also recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Follow the current instructions for your chosen encoder and confirm its settings before changing a live production stream.
Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s bitrate. Count both primary and backup outputs if they send data at the same time, and account for other devices and services using the connection. For example, a single 10 Mbps stream needs more than 10 Mbps of consistently available upload capacity; a nominal speed-test result at that level leaves no headroom.

See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and Streaming tips for bitrate, bandwidth, and reliability advice. A backup encoder can improve continuity if the primary encoder fails, but it also uses bandwidth when transmitting; include it in your capacity planning.
Choose a latency setting that suits mantra playback
Latency is the delay between the broadcast and what viewers see. Buffering is an interruption in playback. For a mostly non-interactive mantra stream, normal latency is a sensible starting point because there is usually little need for viewers to respond in real time.

YouTube explains that lower latency means a smaller read-ahead buffer, which can make playback more vulnerable to network variation. Its guidance says most viewers on low latency experience under 10 seconds of latency, and most viewers on ultra-low latency experience under five seconds; those figures describe delay, not buffering rates. Ultra-low latency is intended for real-time interaction, may increase buffering, and—like low latency—does not support 4K according to YouTube’s latency guidance.
Use low or ultra-low latency only when the interaction benefit matters enough to accept the trade-off. YouTube also notes that network congestion can cause issues even when average connection capacity looks sufficient. Read Understand live streaming latency before changing this setting.

Help viewers who are buffering
If Live Control Room shows a healthy stream and only some viewers are affected, ask them to try these checks:
- Switch to another internet connection, such as mobile data or a different Wi-Fi network, to see whether the issue follows the connection.
- Try another device or browser, and update the YouTube app or browser.
- On the YouTube app, clear its cache where the device provides that option.
- On a TV, check the network and playback setup. YouTube says default broadcast delay is best for minimizing interruptions on YouTube TV playback.
These viewer-side steps are separate from encoder adjustments. YouTube’s guidance is at Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.

Test the setup before relying on it continuously
- Run a representative test. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and network arrangement intended for the mantra stream. Include backup output if you plan to use it.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm the feed looks and sounds right in Live Control Room, and review encoder messages rather than relying only on the local preview.
- Check playback on relevant devices. Confirm that the stream is accessible to viewers on the devices and connections that matter to your audience.
- Verify failover behavior. If you use a backup encoder, test that it can take over as expected and that the combined upload demand is within capacity.
- Monitor while live. Keep checking stream health and viewer reports. A successful short test does not establish that a 24/7 setup will stay healthy indefinitely.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, confirming failover, and monitoring the stream in its encoder settings guidance and live streaming tips.
Common causes and fixes
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room reports stream-health or encoder warnings | Encoder configuration, ingest, or broadcaster upload connection | Review the encoder messages, verify the chosen codec and format, match bitrate to YouTube’s current guidance, and check available upload headroom. |
| Only a few viewers report buffering while stream health is good | Those viewers’ networks or playback devices | Have affected viewers test another connection or device and update their app or browser before changing the outgoing bitrate. |
| Playback worsens after switching to low or ultra-low latency | Reduced read-ahead buffer or network variation | Return to normal latency if real-time interaction is not necessary. |
| Issues appear when a backup output is active | Combined upload demand or shared network use | Include both outputs in the bandwidth calculation and leave the recommended headroom. |
When another ingest method is relevant
HLS is not a general buffering fix. YouTube describes it as an alternative ingestion protocol for certain codec or HDR workflows; it has higher latency because it sends video in segments and requires the encoder to meet YouTube’s HLS setup requirements. Consider it only when your codec, HDR workflow, or encoder setup calls for it—not as a default response to viewer buffering. See Set up an HLS stream.
