Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does the live stream stop when its playlist ends? Not necessarily. If you mean the creator’s playback playlist in OBS, the result depends on whether that source is set to loop. The YouTube broadcast is a separate stage: it ends when the encoder stops sending content, not simply because a playlist has reached its last file. A viewer’s own YouTube playlist is separate again and does not control the creator’s broadcast.
First, identify which playlist has ended
“Playlist” can mean two different things here:
- The creator’s playout list: files played by software such as OBS and sent through an encoder to YouTube. Its repeat setting determines whether playback starts again.
- A viewer’s YouTube playlist: a list the viewer is watching. Its ending does not change the creator’s separate live broadcast.
YouTube distinguishes the live broadcast—the event or video viewers watch—from the stream, the audio-video feed sent to it. The YouTube Live Streaming API guide, last updated September 14, 2026, even uses a channel’s 24/7 live feed as an example of a stream that can continue separately from another broadcast. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams describes that distinction.
What happens in OBS when the files run out?
For a playlist in a VLC Video source
Open the VLC Video source’s properties and check Loop Playlist. OBS describes this control as determining whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files; its documented default is on. If looping is enabled, the list should start over. If it is off, that source does not restart the list automatically. The rest of the scene may continue to output, but its exact picture and sound depend on the source and scene configuration.
For one file in a Media Source
If the source plays a single file rather than a VLC playlist, check the Media Source’s separate Loop setting. These are different controls for different source types. OBS documents both on its Media Sources page.

Why a finished playlist does not automatically end the YouTube broadcast
The playback source feeds the encoder; the encoder sends audio and video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key; YouTube presents the broadcast to viewers. If a playlist ends but the encoder continues sending an active scene, the broadcast may remain live with whatever that scene outputs. If the encoder stops sending content, YouTube says the stream ends: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
So a black screen, frozen image, silence, or other fallback should not be assumed: the exact output after playback ends is setup-dependent. Preview the scene through the playlist’s end rather than relying on a general rule about what viewers will see.

Check the setup before leaving a stream unattended
- Identify where playback runs. Is the playlist being played locally in OBS or by a hosted playout service? The fix depends on the source that actually supplies the video.
- Set the correct repeat control. In OBS, check Loop Playlist for a VLC Video playlist or Loop for a single-file Media Source.
- Preview the complete scene. Watch and listen through the playlist’s final file and its restart point. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the feed in its live streaming tips.
- If the broadcast goes offline, check the encoder and Live Control Room. Confirm the encoder is still sending content and that the correct stream key is in use. YouTube’s live stream settings explain stream keys and related controls.
- Plan a separate recording if you need a replay. YouTube’s archive guidance says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. See Archive live streams.
What happens to a 24-hour replay?
Do not promise that a day-long broadcast will become one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete recording matters, keep a local backup and verify the recording process independently of the live playlist.
Continuous playback does not settle music rights
A playlist looping successfully does not grant permission to stream its recordings or keep an archive available. Rights depend on the specific recordings, rights holders, license scope, territories, and monetization plan. Nothing about a public or uninterrupted stream establishes that the channel has permission to use its Indian music catalog.
