The safest way to shrink a Call of Duty installation is to use the game’s built-in file manager: open the game, choose Menu > Manage Files, review each installed content tile, and uninstall campaigns, multiplayer components, Special Ops or other packs you no longer use. Keep every pack required by a mode you still play. Activision also supports selective installation for a fresh Black Ops 7 download, while on-demand texture streaming can reduce some local storage at the cost of bandwidth and image quality. There is no universal gigabyte saving figure; the space recovered depends on your title, platform, update state and selected packs.
What you can remove safely
Call of Duty installations are split into content components rather than one indivisible file. Depending on the title and platform, the list can include a campaign, multiplayer, Special Ops, Survival or other mode-specific packs. The exact names and dependencies change between releases, so the authoritative list is the one shown in your own game under Manage Files.

Removing a pack does not delete your account, purchases or saved progress. It removes the local files for that component. If you later want the mode back, Activision says the uninstalled content can be downloaded again through your platform’s Store.

- Usually removable: a campaign you have finished, a multiplayer component you do not play, Special Ops or Survival content you do not use, and other tiles explicitly presented as optional by the file manager.
- Keep: every component that the mode you still play identifies as required. A mode can appear installed while failing to start if one of its dependency packs is missing.
- Do not guess from filenames: titles can use shared data or change their pack layout after updates. Confirm the relationship in the current Manage Files screen instead of deleting folders manually.
Older Modern Warfare documentation gives examples of dependencies such as Data Pack 1, Campaign Packs, Multiplayer Packs, Special Ops Packs and a Survival Pack. Those examples explain why a pack that sounds unrelated may still be required, but they are not a universal map for every Call of Duty release.

Remove an installed pack from the current game
Use this workflow when Call of Duty is already installed and you want to reclaim space without removing the entire game.
- Start Call of Duty and wait for the main menu. Do not try to remove components while the game is still launching or applying an update.
- Open Menu > Manage Files. Activision’s current instruction then takes you to Manage Files again, where the installed game and mode tiles are listed.
- Review every tile before changing anything. Identify which entries correspond to the modes you play and look for the action offered for each one. The interface can present options to manage, uninstall or install content.
- Select an unused component and choose Uninstall. Typical candidates are a completed campaign, an unused multiplayer component, Special Ops or another mode you no longer intend to launch.
- Read the confirmation and dependency warning. If the game indicates that another mode needs the component, cancel and keep it unless you are also giving up that mode.
- Confirm the uninstall, then check free storage. Use your console or PC storage screen after the operation finishes. The recovered amount is specific to that title, update and platform.
- Repeat only for components you have decided not to use. Removing several packs in one session is convenient, but leave time for the game and platform to complete each operation and update their storage totals.
Activision describes this system as giving players greater control over what they download and store, helping reduce the overall storage used by their Call of Duty library. The control is reversible: when you return to a removed mode, use the platform Store to redownload its content.
Install only the content you need on a fresh Black Ops 7 download
For a new Black Ops 7 installation, the selective-installation control appears at a different point on each supported platform. Use the option before the download begins so you do not have to install every component and remove it afterward.

These controls are documented specifically for a fresh Black Ops 7 installation. Other Call of Duty titles can expose different labels or a different split between shared files and optional packs, so use the in-game file manager for an existing installation.
Choose between uninstalling a pack and texture streaming
Call of Duty also offers an on-demand texture-streaming setting. Open Menu > Manage Files > Graphics > On-Demand High-Quality Streaming to choose how much high-quality visual content is kept or streamed. Activision documents two choices:

- Minimal: lower graphical quality and lower bandwidth use.
Expanded texture streaming can cycle less frequently used content into a streaming cache instead of requiring all of that content to be downloaded directly to the device. That can reduce local storage for some content, but it shifts part of the trade-off to your internet connection. The cache can change as you play, and its behavior can differ by title and update.
Streaming is not a substitute for removing a known unused campaign or mode pack. If your goal is to reclaim predictable space, uninstall the optional component in Manage Files. If your goal is to reduce the amount of high-quality visual data stored locally while retaining access to the modes you play, texture streaming is the relevant setting.

How much space will you save?
Activision does not publish one universal gigabyte-saving figure for removing Call of Duty content. A campaign pack in one release is not necessarily the same size as a campaign pack in another, and updates can add, replace or consolidate shared files. Platform packaging also affects the result.
Measure the result on your own device:
- Record the free space shown by the console or PC before uninstalling anything.
- Complete the uninstall and allow the platform to finish recalculating storage.
- Record free space again. The difference is the practical saving for that installation.
- If the number looks unchanged, restart the platform or open its storage-management screen again; some systems refresh the displayed total after the content task completes.
Do not treat a store download size, a patch size or a game’s headline install requirement as the amount a particular pack will save. Those figures can include shared data and temporary working space.
Dependencies: avoid breaking the mode you still play
The most common mistake is removing a pack based only on its name. Call of Duty can use shared data across modes, and older Modern Warfare support material lists dependencies including Data Pack 1, Campaign Packs, Multiplayer Packs, Special Ops Packs and a Survival Pack.

If you play multiplayer
Keep the multiplayer component and any dependency the Manage Files screen associates with it. Removing a campaign pack may be harmless in one release but removing a shared data pack can prevent multiplayer from launching in another.

Keep the campaign component for the chapters you want to access and any required shared or campaign pack shown by the game. After finishing the story, you can remove it and redownload it later through the Store.
If you play Special Ops or Survival
Retain the Special Ops or Survival entry and the supporting pack identified by your title. The older documentation’s pack names are examples, not a guarantee that a current release uses the same structure.
If you play Warzone or another free-to-play mode
Use the tiles presented by the installed Call of Duty experience and keep only the components that your mode requires. There is no complete, title-and-platform-independent pack matrix; the current Manage Files screen is the source of truth for your installation.
What to do when old or duplicate files remain
Activision has documented automatic cleanup during recent title migrations. Older Modern Warfare II files were scheduled for removal on August 7, 2025; older Modern Warfare III files were scheduled for removal on August 7, 2025; and older Black Ops 6 files were scheduled for removal on July 7, 2026. Those guides describe the titles as moving outside the shared Call of Duty experience and becoming standalone.

Because those dates and behaviors are title-specific, do not assume that every legacy file disappears automatically on every platform. If duplicate or obsolete entries are still visible:
- Update Call of Duty and the platform to their current versions.
- Restart the platform so pending cleanup and storage indexing can finish.
- Open the current Menu > Manage Files screen and inspect the installed tiles again.
- Remove a legacy component only when the game identifies it as removable and you no longer need its mode.
- Check the platform’s storage screen after the operation rather than judging by an old shortcut, folder name or library label.
If a supposedly retired title still launches from a separate entry, treat that entry as its own installation until the platform and the game identify it for removal. Do not delete random folders from the installation directory: manual deletion can leave an incomplete install that the launcher has to repair.

A mode says content is missing
Return to Menu > Manage Files and look for the mode’s tile or an install action. Reinstall the missing component through the platform Store, then allow the download and any required update to finish before launching the mode again.
The uninstall option is not visible
Wait until you reach the main menu, install pending game updates, and reopen Manage Files. A title may expose different controls while an update is in progress or when a component is already being managed by the platform.

The game still occupies nearly the same amount of space
Some files are shared by multiple modes, so removing one tile will not remove shared data used elsewhere. Confirm that the uninstall completed, refresh the platform’s storage view and check whether another large component remains installed.

Texture streaming causes bandwidth concerns
Open Menu > Manage Files > Graphics > On-Demand High-Quality Streaming and choose Minimal to lower bandwidth use and graphical quality. Choose Optimized when you prefer higher-fidelity graphics and can accommodate increased bandwidth. Neither setting replaces uninstalling an unused mode pack.
A removed mode is needed again
Use the platform Store to redownload the component. Plan for the download size and time before starting, particularly if your connection has a data cap or the mode is required for an imminent session.
Storage strategies that do not remove Call of Duty content
An SSD with more capacity or a compatible external drive can give the installation more room, but it does not reduce the Call of Duty footprint. It is a capacity-expansion solution, not a content-removal method.
Likewise, a generic PC cleanup utility should not be trusted to identify Call of Duty packs safely unless the game or utility vendor explicitly documents that support. The reliable controls are the game’s Manage Files menu and the platform’s documented installation options.
A practical decision checklist
- Need immediate, predictable space? Uninstall a mode pack you no longer use through Manage Files.
- Installing Black Ops 7 from scratch? Use the platform’s selective-installation control before the download begins.
- Want to retain modes but store less high-quality visual data? Adjust On-Demand High-Quality Streaming, recognizing the bandwidth and image-quality trade-off.
- Unsure whether a pack is required? Keep it until the game’s current dependency information makes the relationship clear.
- Seeing legacy files? Update first, then inspect Manage Files; migration cleanup dates are specific to individual titles and platforms.
- Need a removed mode later? Redownload it through the platform Store rather than restoring files manually.
What the current guidance cannot tell you
There is no official, universal table listing every removable pack and dependency for every Call of Duty title, edition and platform. There is also no single Activision-published gigabyte figure that applies to all uninstall operations. Your installation’s Manage Files screen provides the most accurate answer because it reflects the title, update and platform actually in use.
Use that screen to make the final decision, keep dependencies for the modes you still play, and verify the storage total after each change. That combination gives you the smallest practical installation without sacrificing access to content you intend to use.
