Why identifying the exact line matters
“Console spam” is a symptom, not one setting. The same server can print several unrelated streams: debug events, commands typed by players, feedback from command blocks, a built-in spam filter’s messages, plugin output and commands issued automatically by a hosting panel. Silencing one stream does not silence the others.

Paper’s settings.debug option changes the logging level to ALL. Player commands are controlled separately by commands.log. Vanilla command feedback has its own commands.silent-commandblock-console switch, while known noisy command or chat prefixes can be handled with commands.spam-exclusions. Multicraft’s automatic player-count check is a different case again: it repeatedly runs /list, producing lines that begin with “There are”.
Do not start by deleting log files, editing the server JAR or disabling every warning. First capture the complete line, including its prefix, timestamp, logger name and command text. The wording usually tells you which control is appropriate.

Classify the message before changing a setting
- Copy the whole line. Include the part before the message, such as a logger name, plugin name or “issued server command”.
- Check when it appears. A line that repeats on a fixed interval may come from a panel or scheduled task; a line that appears only when someone types a command is player-command logging.
- Check whether it is actionable. A stack trace, warning or error should not be hidden merely because it is frequent. Debug output can be reduced during normal operation, but restore it while diagnosing a fault.
- Match the narrowest remedy. Use a Paper/Spigot option for server-generated categories, a prefix exclusion for one known command, Console Spam Fix for Multicraft’s
/listtext, and Log4j2 only for a deliberate logger-level or appender change. - Restart after edits. Configuration changes are read when the server starts. If the panel offers separate stop and start controls, perform a complete stop before starting again.

Reduce Paper and Spigot output with spigot.yml
Disable debug logging during normal operation
Paper’s current spigot.yml reference describes settings.debug: false as: “Enables debug logging, by setting the log level to ALL.” Keep this value false unless you are actively diagnosing a problem.

debug: falseOpen the spigot.yml belonging to the server instance you actually start, change only the value, save it and restart. This is a logging-volume control. It does not repair a plugin exception, a configuration error or another fault that caused the messages. If you need detailed evidence for troubleshooting, set it back while reproducing the problem, then return it to false after collecting the relevant lines.
Decide whether player-command logging is needed
Paper documents commands.log: true as logging commands executed by players in chat or on signs, with lines in the form <playername> issued server command: <command>. Set it to false only when you accept losing that audit trail.

log: falseThis setting is appropriate when the repeated text clearly identifies player-issued commands and you do not require a record of who ran them. It is not a substitute for fixing a command that is failing, and it does not necessarily affect unrelated plugin messages that happen to contain command text.
Silence command-block feedback without disabling command blocks
The commands.silent-commandblock-console value controls whether vanilla command feedback is logged to the console. The documented default is false. Change it to true when command blocks are the source of repetitive feedback and you still want the blocks to execute.

silent-commandblock-console: trueTest a representative command block after restarting. A silent console does not mean that the command block stopped running; it means its vanilla feedback is no longer printed there. Keep another way to observe failures when building or debugging command-block systems.
Use spam exclusions for a specific prefix
Paper’s commands.spam-exclusions list accepts command or chat prefixes for the built-in spam filter. The exclusions are applied only when commands.enable-spam-exclusions is enabled. Commands must include a leading slash to be treated as commands.

A prefix should be as specific as practical: excluding one known noisy command is safer than excluding a short fragment shared by many commands. Add the entry, save the file and restart. If the line still appears, compare the printed text with the configured prefix, including the slash and any namespace or argument that the server emits.
Do not use exclusions to conceal warnings, errors or unknown plugin output. The point is to remove a known, repetitive category while preserving messages that may explain a crash, permission problem or broken automation.
Fix repeated Multicraft /list messages
Multicraft can run /list automatically to track the player count. The resulting output is commonly repeated in the console and begins with “There are”. On a Bukkit-based server—such as Spigot, Paper, Purpur or another Bukkit derivative—the documented targeted remedy is the Console Spam Fix plugin.

Install and generate the configuration
- Stop the server completely.
- Upload the Console Spam Fix plugin JAR into the server’s
pluginsdirectory. - Start the server once. This first run creates the plugin’s configuration.
- Stop the server again before editing the generated file.
- Open
plugins/ConsoleSpamFix/Config.yml. - Under
Messages-To-Hide-Filter:, add the quoted filter entry:

The filter is intended for the /list output that starts with “There are”. Keep the phrase narrow and confirm that it matches the line you copied. Do not add generic words such as “error”, “warning” or “failed”; doing so could hide unrelated problems. If the server is not Bukkit-based, this plugin procedure does not apply, so use the server’s own logging controls or the panel’s supported configuration instead.
What this filter does—and does not do
Console Spam Fix is a text filter for the known Multicraft message. The documented behavior is that the matching /list output is filtered from the console. The procedure does not establish that every retained log file, web panel transcript or external log collector will be altered; check those destinations separately if preserving or reducing them matters.
Use Log4j2 only when you control startup and files
A custom Log4j2 configuration is the advanced option for administrators who need to change logger levels, filters or appenders beyond the Paper/Spigot settings. It is not the first choice for one repeated line, because a broad logger rule can remove useful output and the configuration is tied to the server build.
Place the configuration and pass the JVM property
Spigot’s logging guide describes placing a file named log4j2.xml beside spigot.jar and adding the system property before the -jar argument:

java -Dlog4j.configurationFile=./plugins/log4j2.xml -jar spigot.jarThe property must be part of the JVM startup command, not typed as a Minecraft command after the server has started. Shared hosting panels may not expose startup flags, in which case this method may be unavailable. Do not assume that uploading the XML file alone changes anything.
Understand the maintenance cost
Editing the server JAR is possible, but it must be repeated after server updates and can make support and rollback harder. A separate configuration file selected with the JVM property is easier to replace, but it still needs review whenever the server software changes.

Paper’s shipped log4j2.xml is a version-sensitive baseline. The documented file uses an info-level root logger, an asynchronous appender, a rolling logs/latest.log file and a NETWORK_PACKETS marker filter that denies those events. Compare your custom file with the configuration shipped by the exact Paper build you run rather than copying an older file unchanged. A setting that is valid for one build may omit an appender or logger expected by another.
Choose filters conservatively
Log4j2 rules can affect whichever appenders you configure, including console output and retained log files. Make one narrow change at a time, keep the original XML as a rollback copy and restart to test. If the server fails to start after adding the JVM property, remove the property or restore the previous command and configuration before investigating the XML. A startup failure is more serious than noisy output.

“Not visible in the console” and “not recorded anywhere” are different outcomes. A panel may display the live console while the server also writes logs/latest.log or rotates older files. Paper/Spigot category settings change what the server emits through its logging system; the exact destinations depend on the server’s logger configuration. The Multicraft plugin procedure specifically documents filtering the console text, so do not presume that it rewrites every external copy. A custom Log4j2 file can deliberately change console and file appenders, which is why it deserves a narrower scope and a rollback plan.

Before disabling a category, decide whether you need it for moderation, command auditing, incident analysis or plugin support. In particular, turning off commands.log removes the documented record of player-issued commands. If you only want a quieter live panel while retaining evidence, prefer a destination-specific logger or panel display control when your hosting environment provides one; the settings described above do not promise that behavior by themselves.

The setting appears to have no effect
- Confirm that you edited the configuration for the server instance being launched, not a backup or a different world directory.
- Check YAML spelling and indentation. The keys are
settings.debug,commands.log,commands.silent-commandblock-console,commands.enable-spam-exclusionsandcommands.spam-exclusions. - Perform a full restart. A live reload is not a reliable substitute for restarting the logging subsystem.
- Copy a fresh line after the restart. If its wording or prefix differs, it may come from another source.
The command-block line remains
Verify that the message is command-block feedback rather than a plugin’s own message. The silent-command-block option governs vanilla command feedback; a plugin can log separately. If the line names a plugin or includes a stack trace, investigate that component instead of broadening the suppression.
The /list filter does not work
- Confirm the server is Bukkit-based and that the plugin loaded without an error.
- Check that the generated path is exactly
plugins/ConsoleSpamFix/Config.yml. - Place
- 'There are'underMessages-To-Hide-Filter:, preserving YAML indentation and quotation marks. - Stop and start after saving. Then compare the remaining line character-for-character; a different player-count message may not match this filter.
The Log4j2 override is ignored or breaks startup
Make sure -Dlog4j.configurationFile=... appears before -jar in the startup command and that the path is readable from the server’s working directory. If a shared panel does not allow custom JVM arguments, use the supported Paper/Spigot settings or a panel-level filter instead. If startup fails, remove the override and return to the original shipped configuration before making further changes.
A practical decision sequence
- One repeated “There are” line from Multicraft: use the Bukkit plugin filter and keep the phrase exact.
- Diagnostic volume while the server is healthy: leave
settings.debugatfalse; enable it temporarily only to investigate. - Player command audit lines: decide whether the audit trail is required, then change
commands.logonly if its loss is acceptable. - Command-block feedback: set
silent-commandblock-consoletotruewhen you want execution to continue without vanilla console feedback. - One known noisy command: enable spam exclusions and add the narrow, slash-prefixed command or chat prefix.
- Complex logger or appender requirements: use Log4j2 only with file access, a controllable startup command and a version-matched baseline.
This sequence keeps the remedy proportional to the source. It also leaves a clear path back: restore the original YAML value, remove the filter entry or remove the JVM property, then restart and verify the output.
