To reduce CPU usage, first check whether FFmpeg is re-encoding or filtering video unnecessarily. If it is using libx264, test a faster preset; if filters are active, test a modest -filter_threads limit. Change one setting at a time and confirm FFmpeg still sustains real-time speed, acceptable quality, and a stable YouTube ingest. There is no universal preset, thread count, or CPU target that works for every VPS and playlist.
Find out what is using CPU before changing the command
Record the current command, FFmpeg build, VPS vCPU allocation, playlist file properties, output resolution and frame rate, CPU use, and FFmpeg’s reported processing speed. This gives you a baseline to compare against. CPU use alone is not enough: a change that lowers CPU but makes FFmpeg fall behind real time will not keep a live stream healthy.
- Check whether FFmpeg is encoding video, applying filters, scaling, or converting frame rate.
- Note whether the playlist’s files share compatible streams and timing properties.
- Watch both system CPU and FFmpeg’s reported speed during a sustained run with representative video and audio.
Change one variable at a time. Compare CPU, speed, visual quality, output bitrate, and stream health after each change. The available documentation does not establish a general percentage reduction or a reliable CPU threshold for all VPS configurations.
Reduce unnecessary video processing
Check whether re-encoding is needed
If the input already has the codec, resolution, frame rate, and other properties you want to send, investigate whether stream copy is viable instead of decoding and encoding the video. Stream copy avoids video encoding work, but it is not a universal fix for arbitrary playlists: the files and output must be compatible with the chosen concat method and YouTube ingest format. Verify the actual media and transitions before relying on it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Remove filters and conversions you do not need
Scaling, frame-rate conversion, and other filters add work. If they are not required to meet your intended output format, test a command without them. If they are necessary, keep them and measure their effect rather than assuming the encoder is the only source of CPU load.
Test a faster encoder preset
For libx264, FFmpeg provides a preset control. A faster preset generally reduces encoding effort but is less compression-efficient: at the same visual quality, it may require more bitrate. That can shift pressure from CPU to network capacity, so compare the resulting quality and bitrate as well as processor use.

- Find the existing
-presetsetting in the video-encoding portion of your command. - Test a faster preset than the one currently in use, changing no other setting for that run.
- Monitor CPU, FFmpeg speed, visual quality, output bitrate, and YouTube stream health over a representative period.
- Keep the change only if FFmpeg sustains real time and the quality and bitrate remain acceptable for your ingest settings and upload capacity.
Preset names and their practical effect depend on the encoder in use. The recommendation here is specifically to test a faster libx264 preset when encoding with that library, not to expect the same behavior from every encoder.
Tune filter threads separately from encoder threads
Encoder threading and filter threading are separate controls. FFmpeg documents -filter_threads as defining how many threads process a filter pipeline; its documented default is the number of available CPUs. On a constrained VPS, test an explicit modest filter-thread count if your command uses filters and contention appears to be a problem. This is a tuning experiment, not a guaranteed CPU reduction.

Do not assume that limiting encoder threads with -threads will solve high CPU use. A thread cap may reduce contention, but it can also keep FFmpeg from encoding at real-time speed. Test any thread change on its own and measure speed and stream health along with CPU.
Make playlist files compatible
The concat demuxer expects input files with matching streams and timing properties. Differences such as codec, time base, or resolution can lead to unreliable transitions or other playlist problems. Inspect each file and normalize items to common output characteristics before concatenating if their properties differ. Normalization may require re-encoding, so it can add work during preparation; weigh that against the reliability of the live playlist.

Keep the output compatible with YouTube Live
Confirm your chosen ingest codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and protocol against YouTube’s current encoder settings. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit.
For H.264, YouTube’s published recommended bitrate examples include 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 14 Mbps at 1080p60, 3 Mbps at 720p30, and 8 Mbps at 720p60. These are examples for those specific combinations, not universal targets. Use the current table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually select.

Test with representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health. A faster preset or changed output setting is not useful if the resulting picture, bitrate, or ingest behavior is unsuitable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check network capacity separately from CPU
A stream can be limited by upload bandwidth even when encoding is fast enough. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing upload capacity and leaving room for the primary plus backup bitrate: “That’s primary + backup + 20% is recommended.” Check the actual bitrate your command produces and provide the recommended headroom; do not diagnose a network bottleneck as a CPU problem.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| CPU remains high after changing encoder threads | Whether filters, scaling, or frame-rate conversion are active; whether filter threads are competing for limited CPU. | Remove unnecessary processing. If filters are needed, test a modest -filter_threads value separately and recheck real-time speed. |
| FFmpeg uses less CPU but falls behind | FFmpeg’s reported speed during a sustained run. | Undo the restrictive thread setting or try a faster encoding configuration. A working live pipeline must keep up with real time. |
| Quality falls or bitrate rises after a preset change | Visual output and measured bitrate at the new preset. | Choose a slower preset if quality matters more and the VPS can sustain it, or confirm that the higher bitrate fits the YouTube target and available upload capacity. |
| Playlist transitions fail or behave inconsistently | Whether files have matching streams and timing properties, including codec, time base, and resolution. | Normalize differing files to common characteristics before using the concat demuxer. |
| YouTube reports ingest or stream-health problems | Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and protocol against YouTube’s current guidance. | Correct the mismatched setting, then test the stream with representative content. |
| Encoding is real-time but the stream drops or stalls | Upload bandwidth and actual output bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended network headroom. | Test the VPS upload path separately and ensure capacity for the primary plus backup bitrate and 20% room. |
When to move to a larger VPS
If the tuned pipeline still cannot sustain real-time output, compare VPS options by their available CPU resources and cost. Do not assume hardware encoding is available: verify that the provider exposes suitable hardware and that your FFmpeg build supports it before planning around it. No specific VPS provider, tier, or price is established here, so use the resources and pricing for the server you are considering.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
