Start by checking whether OBS can use a compatible hardware encoder; then simplify the music scene, reduce output demands only if needed, and test the complete stream before leaving it running. There is no reliable universal CPU target or one preset that guarantees a stable 24/7 broadcast: the result depends on your computer, encoder, scene, upload connection and operating conditions. The official OBS and YouTube guidance checked on October 3, 2026, does not establish India-specific CPU settings, so use the same measured approach wherever your channel is based.

1. Check the encoder before changing your stream quality

Encoding is often the first setting to inspect when OBS is using too much CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it shifts video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS Project describes hardware encoders as generally recommended for best performance, while noting that the available options depend on compatible hardware and platform.

Find the encoder in OBS

  1. Open Settings in OBS.
  2. Select Output. If you use Output Mode: Simple, inspect the video encoder option there. If you use Output Mode: Advanced, inspect the encoder under the Streaming tab.
  3. Check whether a compatible hardware encoder is available. OBS documents options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to system and hardware compatibility.
  4. If an appropriate hardware option is available, select it, apply the settings and test the stream. Confirm OBS is actually using the encoder you selected rather than assuming a dropdown choice resolved the problem.

Update the relevant graphics drivers if the encoder you expect is missing, then check the OBS encoder list again. Start with hardware already in your system, including a compatible integrated GPU; do not assume you need to buy a graphics card before checking what your computer supports. Modern hardware encoders can offer good quality with little performance impact, but older generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. Judge the output on your actual stream.

If hardware encoding is unavailable

Use x264, OBS’s CPU-based software encoder, and try a lower-CPU preset such as superfast or ultrafast. These presets reduce CPU demand by sacrificing compression efficiency: at the same bitrate, the result may look worse than with a slower preset. Check your artwork, any visualizer movement and audio-video sync at the bitrate you intend to use. A preset name alone cannot predict how a particular machine and scene will perform.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Simplify the music scene

A stream showing cover art or a restrained visualizer usually does not need a complicated scene. Unnecessary sources, filters and oversized media can add avoidable rendering work. OBS also notes that some sources continue to use resources while hidden, so hiding an unused source is not always enough.

Keep only what the broadcast needs

  • For static album art, use a still image source rather than a needlessly large or continuously playing media file.
  • Remove sources that are not part of the live layout. Close or remove unused browser sources, especially multiple full-canvas sources.
  • Use source dimensions appropriate to the output instead of loading unnecessarily large assets.
  • Remove filters you do not need. If a filter is necessary, apply it to the smallest relevant source rather than an entire scene where possible.
  • Review hidden sources as well as visible ones; disable or remove sources that should not be running.

After each change, check OBS’s performance indicators and inspect the picture. Changing one class of source at a time makes it easier to tell whether a browser overlay, filter or media asset was responsible for the improvement.

3. Reduce resolution or frame rate only as needed

If the encoder and scene are under control but OBS still struggles, reduce output demands in measured steps. A lower output resolution generally means less video work. If 60 fps cannot be sustained, try 30 fps. For a mostly static music stream, 60 fps may add work without a visible benefit to the cover art; that is a content-based starting point, not a guarantee for every visualizer or audience.

Change output settings before rebuilding the canvas

In Settings > Video, review the Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values. Lower the output resolution first if appropriate for your artwork and viewers, then test a lower frame rate if performance remains poor. Keep the Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged unless GPU resources are especially constrained: changing the canvas can require repositioning and resizing scene sources.

Do not treat 1080p60 as a default for static music artwork. Choose a resolution and frame rate that both the computer and the upload connection can sustain. YouTube transcodes live output into viewer formats, so the encoder’s ingest settings are not the only factor affecting what viewers can select.

Use YouTube ingest settings as connection guidance, not a CPU target

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the bitrate to the codec, resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current table, and test whether your actual upload connection can hold it reliably. YouTube’s guidance checked in 2026 lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30. That is a YouTube ingest recommendation, not a CPU-use figure or an instruction to use 1080p30 on every connection. If your upload cannot sustain the selected target, lower the output resolution or bitrate and test again.

4. Test the full stream before relying on it

OBS performance requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Without your computer specifications, OBS log, scene and measured CPU readings, nobody can give a defensible CPU percentage for this workload. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the exact scene, audio and movement you plan to broadcast.

  1. Run the stream with the finished scene, not a blank test scene.
  2. Check OBS performance indicators while the stream is active. Watch for rendering or encoding trouble rather than judging only by a momentary CPU reading.
  3. Open YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health during the test.
  4. Listen to the audio and inspect the outgoing picture, including any visualizer or transitions.
  5. Change one setting at a time and repeat the test if you see dropped frames, encoding lag, poor image quality or unstable ingest.

Test under conditions representative of the planned broadcast, including the machine’s normal background workload and the internet connection it will use. YouTube recommends testing before going live; its stream-health feedback helps distinguish an ingest or connection problem from an OBS rendering or encoding problem.

5. Plan for the parts CPU settings cannot fix

Lower CPU use does not by itself make a 24/7 local broadcast resilient. A computer running OBS still depends on its power, cooling, internet connection, operating system and ability to recover after a crash or interruption. Plan those around the actual installation and decide how the stream will be restarted if it stops. The official guidance cited here does not establish an India-specific power, network or CPU specification.

Plan replay retention separately

YouTube’s encoder workflow states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be automatically archived under that rule. If you want a replay, plan and verify a separate archive workflow rather than relying on the under-12-hour guidance to cover a full-day broadcast.
