If you mean reducing the data rate of a live broadcast, change the live encoder’s bitrate instead. These are separate settings: changing a livestream bitrate does not shrink a separately saved video file.
First decide what needs to be smaller
There are two different goals that are easy to confuse:
- A smaller prerecorded video: reduce the bitrate when exporting the file. Resolution, frame rate, codec and the video’s visual complexity also affect how much data is needed to preserve quality.
- A live stream that uses less upload bandwidth: reduce the bitrate sent by the live encoder, or choose a lower live resolution or frame rate. This affects the outgoing stream, not an independently stored source file or local recording.
If you need both, adjust and check both workflows separately. YouTube’s upload encoding advice is not the same as its live-ingestion recommendations.
Estimate the file size before exporting
A useful rough estimate is: video payload in megabytes ≈ bitrate in megabits per second × duration in seconds ÷ 8. For example, a longer video at the same bitrate will contain more encoded data than a shorter one. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promised file size: audio and container overhead add data, and the final size depends on the export.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For YouTube uploads, its guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video and variable bitrate (VBR). Those are upload recommendations; do not treat an upload setting as a required livestream setting. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations explain the distinction.
Reduce a prerecorded video’s file size
- Keep a copy of the original. Export a new version so you can compare quality and return to the source if the compressed copy looks poor.
- Lower the export video bitrate. Make a small change, then inspect the result. Lower bitrate generally means a smaller file, but too large a reduction can cause visible blocking, smearing or loss of detail—especially around moving imagery.
- Test a lower resolution if acceptable. A smaller frame can reduce the data needed for a usable image. Check text, artwork and any lyrics remain readable on a phone as well as a larger screen.
- Test a lower frame rate for mostly static visuals. A devotional image with little movement may remain acceptable at a lower frame rate; footage with movement may look less smooth. Compare a representative section before exporting the full video.
- Preserve intelligible, balanced audio. A smaller video file is not useful if the song becomes difficult to hear. Listen through the exported file, including quiet and loud passages.
- Check the exported file’s actual size and playback. Confirm the whole recording plays correctly before uploading or using it as a stream source.
Choose YouTube Live settings for your connection
For a live broadcast, choose a bitrate and picture quality your actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and selecting a quality that is reliable for the connection. Its current H.264 live recommendations provide starting points, not guarantees for a particular venue or internet provider:

| Live video setting | YouTube H.264 recommendation |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
These figures are YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026, not measurements of Indian broadband performance. Test the connection where and when you will stream; results can differ by location, time and network. If a recommended setting is unstable, try a lower bitrate or picture setting and judge both the visible result and stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Audio, rate control and keyframes
- YouTube lists 128 kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate for live encoder settings. Keep the song clear and balanced rather than cutting audio quality blindly.
- YouTube’s live guidance lists CBR (constant bitrate) for rate control. Its upload guidance instead recommends VBR; use the appropriate settings for the task.
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Confirm the encoder’s interval matches the selected live setup.
- YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 in its live encoder guidance. Use a protocol and codec supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current requirements.
Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guide for the current requirements and recommendations rather than copying upload settings into a live encoder.

Test the stream before the devotional program
- Run a speed test close to the event and from the network you will actually use. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate.
- Rehearse with representative audio and movement at the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
- Watch the live control room’s stream health during the rehearsal. If it is unstable, reduce the live bitrate or quality and repeat the test.
- If recording locally, check that the archive file is growing and that the computer has enough free storage. Local recording size is not controlled simply by lowering the stream bitrate unless the recording uses the same encoder settings.
A mostly static devotional visual is a good candidate for testing lower frame rate or resolution, but the acceptable setting depends on the actual image, lyrics and movement. YouTube’s recommendations are starting points; the rehearsal is what tells you whether the chosen settings work at your location.
Protocol choice does not compress a saved file
HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube. HLS also has its own segment and transport requirements. Choose between protocols based on encoder compatibility and delivery needs—not as a way to reduce the size of a prerecorded file. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and its HLS ingestion requirements.

Common problems and fixes
- The file is still too large: check the export’s actual bitrate and duration. Try a lower bitrate, then consider resolution or frame rate if quality remains acceptable.
- The live stream buffers or loses health: test upload capacity at the event location, then lower live bitrate or quality and rehearse again. An export change alone will not fix an encoder sending too much data.
- The live stream looks poor after lowering bitrate: raise bitrate if the connection can sustain it, or test a different resolution or frame rate. Evaluate the picture during motion as well as static sections.
- The upload file and live settings seem contradictory: they serve different purposes. Upload recommendations such as VBR are not livestream requirements; live guidance calls for CBR and separate bitrate recommendations.
- The stream has unwanted latency: check whether the selected protocol and its delivery requirements suit the event. HLS has higher latency than RTMP; changing protocol does not shrink a local video file.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded devotional video or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs the looping stream in the cloud. You upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
