Start with the TV: select the input used by the console and turn on its Game mode or equivalent low-latency setting. Then switch off motion interpolation and other demanding picture processing, and check that the mode actually engaged. If the console uses analog video, make sure any scaler is compatible and set to a mode your TV supports. These steps can reduce delay, but no single setting removes lag from the entire console-to-screen chain.
What input lag means for a retro setup
Input lag is the time between a source sending a signal and the TV displaying it. The TV is one contributor, not the whole controller-to-screen path: the console, any video converter or scaler, and the display can each affect responsiveness. A TV-side measurement therefore cannot tell you the total delay for a particular console and setup. RTINGS defines input lag and explains its TV testing methodology.
For a 60 Hz TV, one refresh cycle is 16.67 ms; RTINGS gives 8.33 ms as the minimum display-side lag in its methodology, not as a promise of total system latency. Its 2025 guidance labels less than 15 ms “Good value” for 1080p at 60 Hz. Treat that as a benchmark for that specific test format, not a universal threshold for every retro console, player, or TV configuration. See RTINGS’ test conditions and results.
Check the signal path first
Identify the console’s actual video output, any adapter or scaler between it and the TV, and the TV input in use. Retro consoles may output composite, S-Video, component, or SCART RGB; a cable or scaler must match both the console output and the device’s input. A scaler is useful when an analog signal needs conversion for an HDTV, but it does not remove delay added by the console, TV, or other equipment.

The RetroTINK-5X Pro manual documents those analog input families and digital output as one example of a compatible product path. It is not a recommendation that this scaler is suitable for every console or setup.
Enable the TV’s low-latency mode
Choose the input connected to the console, then enable Game mode, Game Optimizer, or the equivalent option for your specific TV model. This is usually the most important display setting to check because it can reduce processing that delays the picture. The menu path and behavior differ by model and software; consult the manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on a brand-wide path.

For example, Sony’s instructions are model-specific, and LG says Game Optimizer is available only on select models. If the TV offers automatic low-latency mode (ALLM), it may switch compatible HDMI equipment into a low-latency picture mode automatically. Check the TV’s status or picture settings to confirm it actually switched; do not assume the feature engaged.
Turn off processing that can add delay
If controls still feel delayed, test with motion interpolation and other demanding picture-processing features disabled. These processes can add input lag, while brightness adjustments generally do not. Game mode may disable or restrict some picture options by design, so compare settings that remain available rather than trying to force every enhancement on. Use ALLM as a convenience, not a guarantee
ALLM is intended to trigger low-latency mode when compatible HDMI equipment signals that a game is active. Both the source and display must support the feature, and implementation depends on the TV model. LG documents ALLM and Game Optimizer as model-dependent features; Sony describes the automatic switching behavior.
An original analog console or an intervening converter may not provide the signaling the TV expects. If the TV does not enter Game mode automatically, select the mode manually for that input.

Choose a scaler mode your TV can handle
With analog consoles, the scaler’s buffering mode can affect both compatibility and delay. The RetroTINK-5X Pro manual lists approximately 0.25 frames of lag for Frame Lock and approximately 0.25 to 1.25 frames for Triple Buffer. These are scaler-mode specifications, not end-to-end console-to-screen measurements. Frame Lock may be incompatible with some TVs or capture cards; Triple Buffer can improve compatibility but may add lag and occasional judder. Choose the mode that works reliably with your display, then assess responsiveness in the complete setup. Consult the RetroTINK-5X Pro manual for its mode details.
RetroTINK’s announcement describes its 5X Pro motion-adaptive deinterlacer as adding no lag; that is the manufacturer’s claim about that device feature, not evidence that a full console, scaler, and TV chain has zero delay. The announcement’s simplified launch description of Triple Buffer also differs in precision from the manual’s approximate range, so use the manual figures when comparing modes. Compare the setup one change at a time
- Confirm the connection: verify the console output, cable, scaler input and TV input match.
- Enable Game mode: set it for the input receiving the console, and confirm the TV shows that mode as active.
- Disable optional processing: turn off motion interpolation and compare responsiveness.
- Verify ALLM: if supported, check whether it triggered; otherwise use Game mode manually.
- Test scaler modes: if an analog scaler is in the chain, compare compatible modes and watch for judder or connection problems as well as perceived delay.
Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment affects the picture or controls. This is a practical comparison, not a substitute for measuring the complete chain with appropriate equipment.
What to check when comparing TVs
Look for input-lag results measured at the resolution and refresh rate closest to your source, and check whether the result was recorded with Game mode enabled. Measurements at another refresh rate or with interpolation active may not predict performance with your console and settings. TV-side results also exclude other contributors such as the console and controller. RTINGS publishes results across signal formats and processing settings.
