Steam’s review percentage is a summary of positive and negative reviews that count toward the score—not a complete measure of a game’s quality. Steam displays separate scores for the past 30 days and for the product’s lifetime. Treat those figures as starting points, then read dated reviews to learn what players liked or disliked and whether their reasons matter to you.
What Steam’s review percentage measures
Steam calculates a review score from the aggregate of positive and negative reviews. In practical terms, the percentage indicates the share of counted reviews that recommend the product. Valve describes it as an overview of how customers have reviewed a product over the last 30 days and over its lifetime in its Steamworks User Reviews documentation.

That is a recommendation summary, not a critic score, star rating, or direct measurement of technical quality. Reviews may reflect gameplay, performance, value, business practices, or community experience; the percentage does not separate those factors or tell you which one drove a recommendation.
Steam’s documentation does not specify a minimum review count at which a score becomes reliable, or publish a confidence interval. Avoid treating any particular review-count threshold as official policy.

Why recent and lifetime scores differ
The recent score covers reviews from the past 30 days; the lifetime score reflects the product’s longer review history. Compare like with like: recent against recent, and lifetime against lifetime.
A gap between the figures is a cue to investigate, not an explanation. Check the dates of reviews and relevant product updates before linking a shift to a patch, launch, controversy, or other event. The score alone does not establish what caused sentiment to change.

The reviews shown most prominently on a store page are another selection: Steam says they are chosen from recently written, helpful reviews. They can offer useful current context, but they are not a chronological census of all reviews or necessarily the exact set behind the displayed score. Steam’s documentation on User Reviews describes this prominence selection.
Why a visible review may not count toward the score
A review can be readable on Steam without contributing to the percentage. Steam allows reviews from people who accessed a game through routes such as a key, a Free Weekend, a free copy, or Family Library Sharing. But only purchases made on Steam by the reviewing account count toward the score, according to Valve’s User Reviews documentation.

This distinction helps explain why the reviews a reader can browse and the population counted in the aggregate do not necessarily match. Review visibility and score eligibility are separate questions.
How to assess an individual review
After using the percentage as a triage signal, look for specific reasons that align with your priorities. Performance, controls, accessibility, multiplayer, content, monetization, and support may matter differently to different players. Give more weight to a recurring, specific concern than to a broad claim—but only call something a pattern when the reviews you examined actually show it.

- Read the date. A review’s age can matter when the game has changed; compare it with relevant updates rather than assuming the review describes the current version.
- Check playtime. It gives context for how long the reviewer had played when writing, though it does not by itself prove a review is representative.
- Consider Early Access and purchase context. These can help explain the circumstances of the review.
- Notice language and recommendation direction. The text and the reviewer’s positive or negative recommendation tell you more than the overall percentage alone.
- Judge relevance, not just visibility. A helpful or prominent review may surface useful detail, but its priorities and circumstances may not match yours.
Steam’s review API documentation exposes fields including review text, language, creation and update times, recommendation direction, helpful and funny votes, playtime at review, purchase status, free-copy disclosure, Early Access status, refund status, and developer response information. These details add context; they do not establish that a particular review represents the wider player base.

Steam defines a review bomb as a large group of players using reviews to express unhappiness, lower a score, and provoke a response. Its User Reviews documentation distinguishes activity related to the product or service from an abnormal period unrelated to it. Steam says the latter is removed from the overall score; that does not mean every organized wave of negative reviews is excluded.

The distinction matters when interpreting a sudden change. A burst of reviews may be relevant to a product issue, while unrelated activity is treated differently under Steam’s policy. The score by itself does not show which interpretation applies.
What review filters do—and do not—show
Steam’s review API filters off-topic activity by default. It also offers different filters and sorts; for example, the Helpful filter can widen its day range until it finds results. A set retrieved with particular filters is therefore shaped by those query settings and should not automatically be treated as exhaustive. See the review API documentation for the available options.
When comparing games or investigating a score change, keep the comparison consistent:

- Time window: compare the same period, such as recent with recent or lifetime with lifetime.
- Counted population: distinguish reviews visible to readers from purchases eligible for the score.
- Review context: consider dates, playtime, language, and Early Access status where relevant.
- Selection and filters: note whether you are looking at prominent store-page reviews or an API result with particular filters.
- Reasons: use written feedback to understand the specific strengths or problems behind recommendations.
