Then change one thing at a time: ease the stream quality or bandwidth, remove competing network traffic, and check PC render and encode timing before buying hardware. There is no single bitrate or router upgrade that fixes every cause.
First identify where the stutter happens
Test the headset interface, the problem game, and another PC VR app if available. Note the headset, streaming method, game, PC hardware, and whether the PC connects to the router over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. If only one game stutters, investigate its settings and PC performance before treating the router as the culprit. If several apps stutter, check both the PC and the stream path; a symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Keep a simple record of each change and its result. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether a difference came from network load, stream quality, or PC performance.
Check the local network before changing advanced settings
Confirm the connection and reduce contention
For Steam Link, Steam’s FAQ search result specifies a 5 GHz channel, Wi-Fi 5 or newer, Steam and SteamVR installed on the PC, and the headset and PC on the same network. Check the current Steam Link FAQ for the live requirements, since the page’s full text was not available in the cited inspection.

Pause large downloads and other wireless video or music streams while testing. Steam identifies competing wireless use as a possible source of interference, and recommends checking router and modem firmware. Its Steam Link troubleshooting guidance also covers streaming bandwidth, quality, and background programs.
If practical, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet while leaving the headset on Wi-Fi. This removes the PC’s wireless link from the path, but it cannot solve a game-rendering, encoding, or headset-decoding bottleneck.

Reduce Steam Link stream load gradually
- Lower quality: In Steam Link, try the Fast streaming-quality option as a diagnostic. If the stutter improves, the current stream load or connection may be part of the problem.
- Adjust bandwidth in small steps: Start low and increase until problems appear, then return to the last setting that worked. Steam recommends this approach rather than prescribing one bitrate for everyone.
- Restore automatic behavior if needed: Choose Automatic to return Steam Link to its default bandwidth behavior.
These bandwidth instructions apply to Steam Link; they are not a universal bitrate prescription for Air Link or Virtual Desktop.
Check for PC-side software and performance problems
Steam lists programs that have caused issues for some users, including MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics, Razer Synapse, ASUS AI Suite, ZoneAlarm, Skype or Skypehost, cloud-sync tools, and screen-capture software. Treat these as candidates, not confirmed causes on every PC. Close or pause one at a time during a test rather than disabling several together.

Also check whether a large file transfer or video or music stream is running. If the headset stream improves after closing a background task, repeat the test later to confirm the connection.
Use Meta’s diagnostics to separate rendering from Link problems
For Meta Link, the Oculus Debug Tool can expose performance views for latency timing, app rendering, compositor rendering, asynchronous spacewarp (ASW), Link details, and network guardian information. Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool documentation was updated September 28, 2026; it says to launch the tool from the installed Meta Horizon directory so it matches the installed distribution.

Use the timing views to see whether the app or compositor is struggling, rather than assuming every hitch is wireless. Avoid changing multiple encoder settings at once: Meta warns that a high encode bitrate can cause instability, and that a larger dynamic bitrate offset can make lags and stalls more visible.

Meta’s March 15, 2022 article on Air Link Framerate Insurance (AFI) describes an experimental mitigation for visual artifacts during short bursts of late frames caused by wireless degradation. It says AFI may stop applying when multiple frames in a row are dropped, so it is not a remedy for a persistently poor connection. The article described the feature as disabled by default and, at that time, said it did not support 120 Hz. Its original requirements were Quest 2, PC and Quest software v38 or newer, and USB Link or Air Link. Because those details are from an older experimental-feature announcement, check Meta’s current documentation and software before looking for the feature or relying on those requirements.

Meta’s original explanation describes the route, not a performance guarantee: “Air Link recently brought that freedom to PC VR by using your wireless network to stream PC VR content to a Quest.” (Meta Horizon OS Developers, March 15, 2022.)
When Ethernet or a router upgrade makes sense
An Ethernet cable from PC to router is a reasonable next test if the host PC is using Wi-Fi and network transport seems implicated. A separate router or access point may also be worth considering only after checking the existing network, headset compatibility, and placement. Steam’s cited requirements support 5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5 for Steam Link; they do not establish that Wi-Fi 6 is required or that buying a router will eliminate stutter.
Neither purchase addresses a PC render or encode bottleneck. Use the network and timing checks first, then spend on hardware only if the evidence points to the network path.
