Back up the world and the existing mod list before changing anything. Performance mods and settings are version- and workload-dependent, so compare MSPT, TPS, memory/garbage-collection behavior, and player symptoms after every change rather than installing a large optimization bundle blindly.

First identify what “lag” means
Fabric is a lightweight modding toolchain for Minecraft: Java Edition. A Fabric server still has to process world simulation, send and receive network packets, generate chunks, and keep up with every connected player. A complaint such as “the server is lagging” can describe several different failures that require different fixes.

A server can have more than one category at once. For example, chunk generation can consume CPU and storage bandwidth while also causing network bursts. Do not increase RAM or lower view distance until a profile shows that those resources are involved.

Take a safe baseline before changing the server
- Stop the server cleanly and copy the entire world. Include the world directory, server configuration, Fabric loader files, and the exact
modsfolder. Keep the backup outside the live server directory. - Record the software stack. Write down the Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version, Fabric API version, Java runtime version, mod versions, player count, and current view and simulation distances. Optimization behavior can change between versions.
- Record a normal session. Note when the lag occurs, which players or dimensions are affected, whether exploration triggers it, and whether the problem is continuous or periodic. A useful baseline includes TPS or MSPT, CPU utilization, memory use, garbage-collection activity, and host network and storage utilization.
- Change one variable at a time. Keep the previous working configuration so you can revert a mod, setting, or heap value without rebuilding the server.
Test during the activity that normally causes the problem: ordinary play with the usual player count is more informative than an empty server at the lobby.
Profile the lag with spark
The spark project describes itself as “a performance profiler for Minecraft clients, servers and proxies.” On a Fabric server, use a spark build compatible with the exact Minecraft and Fabric versions. Install it before changing performance settings, then capture data while players are experiencing the lag.

What to inspect
- Server thread and tick rate: Determine whether the main tick loop is spending too long in one subsystem. A tick that takes longer than its target interval produces low TPS and high MSPT.
- CPU-heavy code: Look for recurring methods associated with mob AI, block ticking, redstone, pathfinding, scripts, or a particular mod. A single hot path is a better optimization target than a generic “performance” mod list.
- Entities and block entities: Large farms, item piles, hoppers, machines, and constantly ticking blocks can create sustained work even when players are standing still.
- Chunk work: Check whether generation, loading, or saving spikes when players travel. Exploration-related stalls point to a different remedy than a permanently overloaded tick loop.
- Memory and garbage collection: Watch used heap, allocation behavior, and pause timing. Frequent collections or a heap that remains near its limit indicate pressure; a large heap with a CPU-bound tick does not.
How to use the result
Capture at least one profile during a reproducible incident and compare it with a calm period. Save the profile with the date, player count, and activity that produced it. If the profile cannot identify a dominant source, repeat the capture during a more specific event, such as entering a new area or activating a farm. Profiling is more reliable than adding many optimization mods and hoping one helps.
Install Lithium when the profile shows general tick pressure
Lithium is a general-purpose optimization mod for Minecraft that works on Fabric servers. Its project description says it improves many game systems, including physics, mob AI, block ticking, and related data structures, while preserving intended game behavior. That makes it a sensible first experiment when spark shows broad CPU or tick pressure rather than one broken machine or entity farm.
The Lithium project says users can expect “more than a 50% improvement to tick times.” That is a project expectation, not a guarantee for every Minecraft version, modpack, CPU, or workload. A September 11, 2024 guide from Shockbyte reports an average 45% improvement in server TPS; that figure is likewise a general guide claim, not a promise for your server.

Safe Lithium procedure
- Check the Lithium release notes and dependencies against the server’s exact Minecraft and Fabric versions.
- Make the backup described above and retain the original
modsfolder. - Install only Lithium, restart the server, and let the normal world load completely.
- Repeat the same workload used for the baseline profile.
- Compare MSPT, TPS, CPU usage, and player symptoms. Keep the mod only if the measured result is positive and no gameplay or compatibility issue appears.
Lithium cannot repair a saturated network, a client that renders poorly, a storage device that stalls during chunk generation, or a single mod whose code dominates the profile. In those cases, target the measured bottleneck instead.
Use FerriteCore for demonstrated memory pressure
FerriteCore focuses on reducing memory use through several optimizations, some of which apply to servers. It is relevant when spark shows high allocation, repeated garbage-collection pauses, or a heap that is consistently close to its limit. Lower memory use can reduce pressure, but the result depends on the modpack, registries, loaded chunks, and workload.
FerriteCore documentation gives a specific example: in version 2.5.9 of All Of Fabric 3, reported RAM usage (heap size) fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB. That is a measurement from one named setup and should not be presented as a universal saving or a target heap size for another pack.
FerriteCore installation and validation
- Verify that the FerriteCore build supports the Minecraft and Fabric versions in use.
- Back up the world and configuration, then add FerriteCore without changing unrelated settings.
- Restart and reproduce the memory-heavy workload, such as the normal player count with the usual dimensions loaded.
- Compare peak heap, garbage-collection frequency and pause duration, and server responsiveness with the baseline.
- Remove the mod and restore the backup if startup errors, visual or gameplay anomalies, or worse performance occur.
FerriteCore does not substitute for fixing an entity-heavy farm, a memory leak in another mod, or an undersized host. It is a memory optimization, not a general cure for every low-TPS incident.
Set Java heap deliberately
The official Fabric launcher example is:
java -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-...jar nogui-Xmx2G is an example starting value, not a recommendation for every server. Choose a heap limit using player count, modpack size, loaded chunks, and spark’s memory and garbage-collection observations. Leave enough RAM for the operating system and other host processes; assigning nearly all physical memory to Java can make the machine swap or become unstable.

What changing -Xmx can and cannot do
- It can help when the server repeatedly reaches its heap limit and garbage collection interrupts play.
- It cannot fix a CPU-bound tick loop, excessive entities, a slow disk, or a network path with packet loss.
- More is not automatically better: an unnecessarily large heap can make a full garbage-collection cycle more expensive and can hide the real allocation source.
Change the value in small, documented steps, restart the server, and profile the same workload. Keep the Java version consistent while comparing results so that the measurement reflects the heap change rather than a runtime change.
Tune view distance, simulation distance and world load only after profiling
View distance
View distance controls how much terrain the server keeps available to send around players. If spark shows chunk-loading or generation pressure, lower it gradually and test exploration with the normal player count. A lower value can reduce chunk work and network traffic, but it also shortens the visible world.
Simulation distance
Simulation distance controls how far entities and game logic continue to tick around players. If entities or block ticking dominate the profile, reducing it can lower recurring CPU work. Test farms, redstone and automation after each change because behavior outside the simulated area will differ.
Always-loaded areas and entities
- Audit spawn chunks, chunk-loading mechanisms, and other permanently active areas.
- Remove abandoned item piles, excessive mobs, and redundant machines rather than relying only on a global distance reduction.
- Inspect block entities such as hoppers and storage systems when the profile names them as a hot path.
Pre-generating terrain
If the incident occurs primarily when players explore, pre-generate frequently traveled terrain during a maintenance window, provided the storage capacity and administrative tools are compatible with the server version. Pre-generation moves the cost away from live exploration; it does not reduce the size of the resulting world or the cost of simulating every loaded area. Measure disk use and generation time before selecting a radius.

Separate server lag from client and network problems
When only one player has low FPS
Check that player’s render distance, shaders, resource packs, graphics settings, and client-side mods. A server-side optimization cannot raise the frame rate of a computer that is rendering too many particles or complex chunks.

When players rubber-band
Compare player latency and packet behavior with the server’s MSPT. Normal MSPT with high or erratic latency points toward the host’s network, the player’s connection, or the route between them. Lowering simulation distance will not repair packet loss.
When exploration causes pauses
Profile during travel and inspect chunk generation, storage latency, CPU utilization and network output. Reduce distances or pre-generate terrain only after confirming that chunk work is the trigger.

If profiling and operating-system metrics show sustained CPU, RAM, storage, or network saturation, the machine may be undersized for the modpack and player load. At that point, compare a hardware upgrade with managed Minecraft server hosting. Evaluate the host’s CPU performance, memory allocation, storage type, network capacity, location relative to players, backup policy, and support—not just a headline RAM number.
Provider pricing, geography, support quality and affiliate terms change over time and are not established by the performance measurements above. Choose infrastructure after identifying the saturated resource. Moving a server to a larger plan will not help if the actual issue is client FPS, a broken mod, or an entity farm.

The server will not start after adding a mod
- Read the first meaningful error in the log, including the named Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API, or mod version.
- Stop the server and remove the newly added mod while preserving the log.
- Restore the previous working
modsfolder or backup if the world or configuration changed. - Check for a release built for the exact game and loader version before trying again.
Shockbyte’s September 11, 2024 guide warns that optimization mods “may not be compatible with the mods already installed on your server.” Treat compatibility as a testable condition, not an assumption.

TPS improves but players still report lag
Reclassify the symptom. Check latency, packet behavior, client FPS and chunk-generation events. A server can achieve healthy tick timing while a player’s connection or computer remains the limiting factor.
Memory use is high after adding more content
Capture spark data during the peak rather than raising -Xmx immediately. Identify loaded chunks, entities, allocations and garbage-collection pauses. If the heap is not near its limit, additional memory is unlikely to address the delay.
One farm or base causes recurring spikes
Profile while that area is loaded, identify the dominant entities or block entities, then reduce the source: consolidate machines, remove item accumulation, limit always-loaded chunks, or redesign the farm. Apply a global distance change only if the profile shows broad world-load pressure.
A practical change-and-verify checklist
- Classify the symptom before selecting a remedy.
- Back up the world, configuration and mod list.
- Install a version-compatible spark build and profile the incident.
- Record MSPT/TPS, CPU, heap and garbage collection, entities, block entities, chunk work, storage and network observations.
- Test Lithium for broad tick pressure; validate against the same workload.
- Test FerriteCore only when memory pressure is measured.
- Adjust Java heap from evidence, leaving headroom for the host operating system.
- Lower view or simulation distance, reduce always-loaded areas, address entities, or pre-generate terrain only when the profile points there.
- Change one item at a time and keep the previous configuration for rollback.
- Escalate to managed hosting or hardware changes only when the host resource is demonstrably saturated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which should I install first, Lithium or FerriteCore?
Use spark first. Lithium targets general CPU and tick work; FerriteCore targets memory use. Install the one that matches the measured bottleneck, not a default order.
Will giving a Fabric server more RAM increase TPS?
Only when heap pressure and garbage-collection pauses are limiting the server. Extra heap does not fix CPU-bound ticks, entities, chunk generation, or network latency.
Can lower view distance fix every kind of lag?
No. It can reduce chunk load and network work, but it will not fix client FPS, packet loss, or a hot path unrelated to chunks.
Why should I install optimization mods one at a time?
If several mods are added together, you cannot identify which change improved performance or caused a startup and compatibility problem. One-at-a-time testing also makes rollback straightforward.
