To reduce OBS CPU use during a nonstop YouTube stream, first identify whether the bottleneck is video encoding, scene rendering, or another workload. Then test one change at a time: use a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the problem, simplify resource-heavy scenes, and lower output resolution or frame rate if your content allows. Check the stream’s quality and YouTube’s health indicators in a representative test before relying on the setup.
Diagnose what is using resources before changing settings
OBS load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements guidance says CPU requirements vary considerably with those factors (OBS system requirements). High CPU use does not by itself prove that the CPU encoder is the only cause: OBS also composites scenes using the GPU, and games or other applications compete for system resources. OBS distinguishes rendering lag from encoding overload in its performance troubleshooting guidance.
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and note the active encoder and its settings.
- Record the output resolution and frame rate shown in Settings > Video.
- During a representative stream or test, note CPU use and whether OBS reports encoding overload, rendering lag, or dropped frames. These symptoms point to different constraints; do not treat every performance warning as a CPU-encoding problem.
- Keep this baseline so you can compare after each adjustment.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting configuration. Treat it as a baseline, not proof that a system will remain stable throughout a long stream.
Try a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the bottleneck
When OBS is using a software CPU encoder and encoding is the problem, a supported hardware encoder can move video-encoding work to a specialized component. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox, with availability depending on the hardware and operating system (OBS hardware encoding).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings > Output and check the encoder choices actually available on your system.
- If a supported hardware option is available, select it and configure a test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Review both the recording or stream output quality and OBS performance indicators during representative gameplay and scene changes before using it for a long broadcast.
Do not switch blindly. Encoder quality and performance depend on hardware generation and configuration; older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. Modern hardware encoders can offer very good quality with little performance impact, but that general guidance is not a guarantee for every device or workload. Compare the result on your own machine.
Simplify scenes and sources
Every source in a scene uses resources, and some sources may continue to use resources even while hidden. OBS’s official troubleshooting guide recommends reducing unnecessary source and scene complexity. Test changes individually so you can see which ones help.

- Remove sources you do not use, and keep the active scene collection focused on the production you are running.
- Use capture and media sources at no higher resolution than the output needs.
- Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources. If an animated overlay is script-heavy, test turning it off.
- For static artwork, try an Image Source instead of a browser overlay when that suits the design.
These are practical changes to test, not a measured ranking of which source saves the most CPU or GPU resources.
Lower resolution or frame rate only if the stream can tolerate it
Output resolution and frame rate affect workload. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps, while viewers may notice changes to image detail or motion (OBS streaming guidance). If your content does not need 60 fps, test 30 fps; if it does not need the current resolution, test a lower one. Make one adjustment at a time and review the result at the size and motion level your viewers will see.

OBS’s advanced recording guide lists veryfast as an x264 CPU Usage Preset in a recording baseline (OBS advanced recording settings). That recording recommendation is not a universal fix for YouTube streaming. Encoder controls and quality tradeoffs vary with the selected configuration.
Set YouTube delivery values for your codec and upload capacity
Bitrate is primarily an upload and delivery setting, not a direct CPU-reduction setting. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists supported codecs and guidance up to 60 fps. Choose values for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity you will actually use; YouTube publishes separate bitrate ranges for H.264, AV1, and H.265.

For H.264 ingestion, YouTube’s table gives these minimum and recommended bitrates. They are YouTube delivery recommendations, not CPU targets; the page does not display a publication date.
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Test using representative audio and motion before going live, then monitor YouTube stream health during the event, as YouTube advises. A bitrate change alone is unlikely to solve CPU encoding or scene-rendering overload.

Validate changes with a representative preflight
- Apply one change, then run a test using the scenes, game workload, motion, and audio you expect during the broadcast.
- Check OBS for encoding overload, rendering lag, and dropped frames, and compare CPU use with your recorded baseline.
- Check the stream’s appearance and YouTube stream health. If quality or stability worsens, revert that change and test another.
- Once the setup is acceptable, repeat the test under the conditions that most stress it, such as gameplay and complex scene transitions.
No reviewed official guidance establishes a universal CPU reduction for any one adjustment or a safe maximum uninterrupted runtime. A successful preflight is useful evidence for your own setup, not a guarantee about every future session.
When an encoder-capable GPU upgrade may be relevant
If testing shows that CPU encoding is the limiting factor and your current system lacks a suitable hardware encoder, a graphics card with supported NVENC is one possible upgrade category—not a universal requirement. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide describes NVENC support on Windows and Linux for GeForce 750 Ti or 900-series Maxwell and newer, and recommends a Turing-generation encoder for best results in that guide. Verify the exact GPU, computer, operating system, drivers, power supply, and case before buying; the compatibility guidance does not establish that a particular upgrade will solve your workload or reduce CPU use by a specific amount.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a nonstop YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a live camera or gameplay capture, StreamNeo keeps a channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
