These steps can improve play or reduce access costs, but they cannot make every PC run every new game well.
How do I make my current PC run games better?
Start with the game’s current system requirements and compare them with your PC’s CPU, graphics hardware and memory. Requirements are a compatibility guide, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality. Steam Support cautions that “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” Steam’s performance troubleshooting guide explains that game configuration and the specific machine both matter.
Find the bottleneck before changing settings
Use the game’s own performance display, your platform’s overlay or Steam’s in-game performance monitor to see whether the CPU, GPU, system RAM or frame rate is the limiting factor. Steam says its monitor can show FPS, CPU, GPU and system RAM metrics; see Steam’s performance monitor guide. This helps you avoid spending money on a component that is not causing the problem.
Try reversible changes first
Change one thing at a time, then play long enough to judge both smoothness and image quality. A practical order is:

- Close apps and processes you do not need while gaming. Steam Support notes that “Running fewer processes in the background while playing a game may have an immediate impact on in-game performance.”
- Check whether enough memory is available. Close unnecessary programs if they are consuming it.
- Update the drivers for your graphics and other relevant components.
- Lower the resolution or demanding video effects, such as shadows, if the game remains choppy. Keep the visual quality at a level you find acceptable.
These adjustments do not produce the same result on every PC or in every game. Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance recommends settings and resource management as well as noting that hardware upgrades can help when a machine cannot meet a game’s demands.
Check for a physical problem if performance is abnormal
If several games suddenly perform poorly, or temperatures point to overheating, settings may not be enough. Steam identifies overheating as a hardware issue and discusses ventilation and heatsink fixes in its hardware troubleshooting guide. If you are not comfortable opening the computer, seek qualified repair help. Performance trouble can also come from a game bug or inefficient coding, so a struggling game does not automatically mean the PC needs replacing.

Can I save money on PC games without upgrading?
Lower your cost of access by matching how you play to the way you pay. A cheap purchase is wasted if the computer cannot run the game acceptably, while a subscription is poor value if its catalog does not include games you want or you rarely play. Check current local prices and terms rather than assuming one option is always cheaper.

When is cloud gaming worth considering?
Cloud gaming can be an alternative when your computer is not powerful enough for a supported title, but it is conditional—not automatically cheaper or suitable. Check whether the exact game is playable through the service, whether your region and device are supported, whether your connection gives acceptable latency, and what the current charge covers. Xbox describes access to select games and supported devices on its Xbox Cloud Gaming page.
Terms can change. In an announcement dated September 3, 2026, Xbox described purchased playtime hours for eligible owned games and said pricing and availability information would follow in November. Read the Xbox announcement and confirm the live offer before budgeting; the announcement alone does not establish a current price or universal eligibility.
