Choose a Steam Deck if you want to play your Steam library as a handheld, with built-in controls and the option to play away from a desk. Choose a gaming PC if desktop play and selecting hardware for a particular resolution, frame rate, and settings matter more. The Deck is a portable gaming PC, but your Steam library is not automatically compatible with it, and docking it does not make games run faster. For a fair performance or price comparison, you need to compare the Deck with a specific PC build—not an unspecified “gaming PC.”
Steam Deck vs. a gaming PC at a glance
| What matters | Steam Deck | Gaming PC |
|---|---|---|
| Where you play | Portable handheld with built-in gamepad controls, trackpads, gyro controls, and quick suspend/resume, according to Valve’s hardware page. | Best suited to desktop play; portability depends on the particular computer and setup. |
| Your Steam games | Compatibility varies by game. Valve labels titles Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. | A PC’s compatibility depends on its hardware, operating system, and the game. This comparison does not establish compatibility for a particular PC configuration. |
| Performance and image quality | Valve lists the Deck’s hardware specifications, but those specifications alone do not establish performance against a particular PC. | Depends on the components and settings selected. No single performance result applies to every gaming PC. |
| Screen and power | Built-in screen and battery; runtime varies with model and what you play. | Typically used with an external display and wall power; the exact setup depends on the PC. |
| Desk setup | Can connect to an external display and peripherals through USB-C or a compatible dock or hub. Docking does not boost game performance. | Designed to connect to a display and peripherals, though the available connections depend on the computer. |
| Price | Depends on the model and current availability. | Depends on the specific build and included components. The evidence here does not support a universal price winner. |
The Deck-side specifications and estimates in this article come from Valve’s product and support pages; they are not independent comparative tests. A meaningful head-to-head on cost or performance needs a named PC build, target resolution, settings, and a comparable test.
Which is better for the way you play?
Choose the Steam Deck for handheld convenience
The Deck’s clearest advantage is that it combines a screen and controls in a portable device. Valve describes it as a portable gaming PC and lists built-in gamepad controls, trackpads, gyro, and quick suspend/resume. That makes it a natural fit if you want to play on a couch, while travelling, or away from a conventional desk. Whether your games suit the device still depends on their compatibility and how you want them to run.
Choose a gaming PC for a desktop-first setup
A desktop PC is the more direct fit if you want to choose hardware around a desired monitor resolution, frame rate, and graphics settings. But “gaming PC” covers many possible configurations, so it is not accurate to say all PCs outperform the Deck, cost more, or cost less. Name the PC’s components and the Deck model before drawing a performance or price conclusion.

Consider a dock only if you want a desk setup
A dock or compatible USB-C hub can connect the Deck to an external display and peripherals, but it does not turn the handheld into a faster gaming system. Valve says docking is more like plugging a USB-C hub into a PC and that the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. See Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ and docking guidance.
Check whether the games you own work on Deck
A Steam purchase does not guarantee the same experience on every device. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified labels give you a useful game-by-game screening method:

Valve says its reviews are ongoing and ratings can change as games and features change. Check the current label on each game’s store page, especially for games you play often. Treat the rating as a starting point, not a promise that it meets your own requirements for controls, readability, online play, or performance.
SteamOS is Linux-based and optimized for gaming while retaining PC flexibility and access to Steam, as Valve describes on its SteamOS page. Compatibility can depend on Proton and a game’s middleware, including anti-cheat systems. Do not assume every Windows game works on Deck; verify the individual title.

What the current Deck models offer
Valve’s current model comparison lists LCD and OLED configurations. The screen, refresh rate, battery capacity, and vendor-estimated gameplay hours differ:
| Model type listed by Valve | Screen | Battery and estimated gameplay |
|---|---|---|
| OLED | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90 Hz | 50 Wh; Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on content. |
| LCD | 7-inch LCD, up to 60 Hz | 40 Wh; Valve estimates 2–8 hours of gameplay depending on content. |
These are Valve’s content-dependent estimates on its model comparison page, not guaranteed runtimes or independent test results. Confirm model availability and prices in your region before buying. Separately, Valve’s hardware page describes a 40 Wh battery and estimates approximately 7–8 hours for lighter uses such as streaming, smaller 2D games, or web browsing. Keep that lighter-use estimate distinct from the model comparison’s gameplay ranges.

These are Deck specifications, not a benchmark against a gaming PC. The same technical-specifications page lists USB-C external-display output and UHS-I microSD support.

Adding storage is optional
Valve documents a microSD card slot across Steam Deck models. A compatible UHS-I microSD card can add space for a large library, but it is an optional expansion rather than a requirement. Check the current specifications for the model you are considering.

Offline play depends on the game
Valve’s FAQ says an installed game can be played offline unless that game requires an internet connection. Downloading games and online multiplayer require internet access.
Use model-specific repair information
Valve points owners to iFixit for replacement parts and repair guides. If repairability is important to your decision, consult the current instructions for the exact model rather than assuming all Deck repairs have the same difficulty.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- List the games you most want to play. Check their current Deck compatibility labels, and note any titles that are Unsupported, Unknown, or need adjustments.
- Pick your main place to play. If you want handheld play and built-in controls, the Deck has a distinct advantage. If you expect to play at a desk on a monitor, start by specifying a PC configuration.
- Set the visual target. Decide the resolution, frame rate, and settings you expect. Compare those targets against a named PC and a particular Deck model; the available specifications alone do not settle performance.
- Account for power and setup. Consider the Deck’s content-dependent battery estimates if you play away from an outlet. If you mostly play at a desk, decide whether an external display and peripherals through a hub are enough for you, remembering that docking adds no performance.
- Compare actual purchase options. Use current local prices for the Deck model and the specific PC build, including any display or peripherals you need. Without those details, there is no reliable universal cost winner.
