The most reliable way to reduce damage from a technology-stock selloff is to control concentration before it happens. Inventory your direct and indirect technology exposure, choose a stock-bond-cash allocation that fits your time horizon and ability to absorb losses, add assets driven by different risks, and rebalance according to a written rule. Selling everything after prices have fallen is usually a reaction, not a risk-management plan.

Start with the risk you actually own

A portfolio can look diversified because it contains several funds while still depending heavily on the same large technology companies. Capitalization-weighted broad-market indexes, technology-sector funds, individual shares, employer equity, stock options and company retirement plans can all create overlapping exposure.

The first task is therefore measurement, not a guess about where technology prices will go next. Diversification means spreading money among different investments to reduce risk, but it cannot prevent losses in a broad market decline.

Build a look-through inventory

  1. List every account and holding. Include taxable brokerage accounts, retirement plans, managed accounts, cash-management products, employer stock and unvested or exercised options.
  2. Record the percentage in each holding. Use current market value, not the amount originally invested.
  3. Open each fund’s current holdings report. Record its technology-sector weight and its largest individual positions. A broad fund may have a substantial technology allocation even when its name does not include the word “technology.”
  4. Map duplicates. Count the same company once across direct shares, sector funds and index funds when estimating your economic exposure.
  5. Separate obligations from investments. Employer stock and options can add both investment concentration and dependence on the same company’s income, benefits or job prospects.

Check concentration by more than sector

Schwab recommends examining concentration by sector, company, company size and country. That approach catches risks a simple sector pie chart misses: a portfolio can be spread across several industries but concentrated in a handful of mega-cap companies, one country or one currency.

Exposure to inspect What to look for Why it matters during a technology decline
Sector Technology shares in individual holdings, sector funds and broad indexes Several vehicles may fall together when the same sector is repriced.
Top companies Repeated holdings among your largest positions Company-specific earnings, regulation or valuation shocks can affect every fund that owns the stock.
Company size Large-, mid- and small-cap exposure Different size groups can respond differently to financing conditions and economic growth.
Country and region Home-country bias and overseas exposure Markets can diverge because of currencies, policy, valuations and local economic cycles.
Income source Employer shares, options and salary tied to one company or industry A job loss and an investment loss can occur at the same time.

Do not treat the number of ticker symbols as a diversification score. The relevant question is how many independent sources of risk drive the portfolio’s outcome.

Choose an allocation before the selloff

Asset allocation is the decision about how much to hold in stocks, bonds and cash. The appropriate mix depends on three related but different tests: when you need the money, how much volatility you can emotionally tolerate, and how much loss your finances can withstand without derailing the goal.

Match the mix to the goal date

Money needed soon generally cannot wait for a technology-led recovery. Investors approaching a home purchase, tuition payment, business expense or retirement withdrawal may rationally hold more bonds or cash than someone with several decades before the goal. A long horizon can make temporary volatility easier to bear, but it does not make concentration risk disappear.

Distinguish tolerance from capacity

  • Risk tolerance is your ability to stay invested when account values fall. A plan that causes panic selling is too aggressive in practice, even if its historical return potential looks attractive.
  • Risk capacity is the financial ability to absorb a loss. Stable income, emergency savings, flexible spending and a distant goal increase capacity; near-term withdrawals, debt or uncertain income reduce it.
  • Time horizon determines how long a recovery can take before the money is required.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s asset-allocation guide describes stocks as historically offering the greatest risk and return potential, bonds as generally less volatile with more modest returns, and cash equivalents as usually having the lowest risk and return. These are broad historical descriptions, not promises for any particular period.

Asset class Typical role Important limitation
Stocks Long-term growth and participation in economic expansion Highest volatility among the three broad classes and no protection from a technology-driven equity decline if the stock exposure remains concentrated.
Bonds Income and a potentially steadier counterweight to equities Prices can fall when interest rates rise; credit quality, duration and market conditions matter.
Cash and cash equivalents Near-term spending, emergency reserves and liquidity Lower long-term return potential and inflation risk.

Do not search for a universal technology percentage

No authoritative source establishes one universally “safe” technology allocation or a guaranteed hedge ratio. A reasonable target is personal: it must reflect the goal, tax situation, ability to withstand losses and the concentration revealed by your inventory. Write the target before a crisis so a falling market does not set the policy for you.

Diversify across genuinely different risk drivers

Reducing a technology fund and replacing it with another fund that owns the same companies does not solve the underlying problem. Diversification is more meaningful when the new exposure responds to different economic, geographic or financing conditions.

Add non-technology equity exposure deliberately

Other sectors can provide different earnings drivers, but they remain stocks and can fall in a general market decline. Review the actual holdings rather than relying on a fund label. A portfolio can include health care, financials, industrials, consumer businesses, utilities, energy, real estate and other sectors while still retaining a large technology weight through a capitalization-weighted index.

Use international equities to broaden the opportunity set

International developed and emerging-market companies add countries, currencies, regulatory systems and economic cycles that do not move in lockstep with the U.S. market. They also add currency and political risk, so geographic diversification is not a one-way hedge. Check both the country weights and the largest companies; an overseas fund can still be concentrated.

Consider company-size diversification

Large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap stocks have different business models and financing sensitivities. Adding smaller companies does not make an equity allocation defensive, but it can reduce reliance on a small group of dominant companies. Review fees, liquidity and the fund’s benchmark before making the change.

Reserve a defensive allocation for bonds and cash

High-quality government bonds, investment-grade corporate bonds and cash can serve different purposes. Cash is designed for liquidity and near-term spending. Bonds can provide income and a potential stabilizer, but their behavior depends on maturity, duration, credit quality and interest rates.

Understand what “defensive” fixed income can and cannot do

Treasuries and government-backed securities

Schwab describes U.S. Treasuries as generally safe fixed-income investments because the underlying securities are backed by the U.S. government. That description applies to the credit backing of the securities, not to a promise that a bond fund’s share price will remain constant. If you sell a Treasury before maturity, its market value can be above or below your purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bond funds have market risk

Bond-fund prices can decline when interest rates rise. Longer-duration funds usually have greater sensitivity to rate changes than shorter-duration funds. Credit spreads can widen, reducing the value of corporate and lower-quality bonds even if government rates are unchanged. A fund’s liquidity, duration, credit quality and fees should be reviewed together.

Schwab Asset Management’s analysis using data through September 30, 2024 found that adding fixed income reduced volatility and return dispersion in its hypothetical comparisons. The analysis also emphasized that fixed-income ETFs are not risk-free. Its 10-year comparison period ending September 30, 2024 is a historical window, not a forecast.

Why bonds may not always move opposite stocks

Vanguard notes that bonds have historically acted as a stabilizer because fixed income generally has less volatility risk than equities, while also noting that recent periods have challenged traditional stock-bond relationships. Inflation shocks, rapidly changing interest-rate expectations and credit stress can cause stocks and bonds to decline together. Diversification improves the range of possible outcomes; it does not guarantee a positive result in every month or year.

Implement the plan in five steps

  1. Calculate current exposure. Create a spreadsheet with each holding, market value, sector, largest underlying companies, country exposure, company size, stock-bond-cash classification and account location. Include employer stock and options. Add the look-through technology exposure from every fund you own.
  2. Set target ranges. Choose stock, bond and cash targets from the goal date, risk tolerance and risk capacity. Use ranges rather than a single precise forecast if that makes the plan easier to follow. Define the minimum and maximum acceptable weight for each major category.
  3. Direct new money to gaps first. New contributions, dividends and maturing securities can increase underrepresented sectors, regions or high-quality fixed income without immediately selling an appreciated taxable technology position. This can reduce overlap while giving you time to evaluate tax consequences.
  4. Match defensive assets to the withdrawal schedule. Keep a cash reserve for near-term spending. For the remaining defensive allocation, evaluate Treasuries or investment-grade bonds by maturity, duration, credit quality, fund structure, liquidity and costs.
  5. Document the review process. Write down the target ranges, the calendar review date or drift threshold, which account will be used first, and how taxes and transaction costs will be considered. Revisit the plan after a major life change, not only after a dramatic market headline.

Rebalance by rule instead of forecasting

Rebalancing restores the risk level you selected. It is not a method for predicting the next market move. When one asset class rises faster than the others, the portfolio can become more aggressive than intended; when it falls, the portfolio may become more conservative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a threshold you can follow

Vanguard illustrates a 70% stock and 30% bond portfolio that is rebalanced when the mix drifts by 5 percentage points or more. This is an example of a rule, not a recommendation for every investor. Your written rule might use a calendar schedule, a percentage-point trigger, or both. The important features are that the trigger is defined in advance and that you apply it consistently.

Rule design choice How it works Trade-off
Calendar review Check and, if necessary, trade on a set schedule such as annually or semiannually. Simple to administer, but the portfolio can drift substantially between reviews.
Percentage-point threshold Trade when an allocation moves outside its target range by a stated number of percentage points. Responds to actual drift, but may create more frequent trades in volatile markets.
Hybrid rule Review on a calendar date and act only when a threshold is breached. Balances discipline and transaction control, but requires record keeping.

Choose the order of trades

  • Use contributions and withdrawals to move weights when possible.
  • Prefer tax-advantaged accounts for trades when that fits the account’s rules and your overall plan.
  • In taxable accounts, compare capital-gains consequences, holding periods, transaction costs and the benefit of reducing concentration.
  • Record the post-trade allocation so the next review uses accurate starting weights.

Handle taxes, employer stock and options carefully

Selling appreciated technology holdings can create taxable capital gains. The tax bill, holding period, cost basis, state rules and account type should be considered before a sale. Tax efficiency is not a reason to retain a concentration that threatens a major goal, but it is a reason to compare gradual sales, new contributions and account-specific trades rather than acting blindly.

Employer stock deserves a separate risk review. Your paycheck, benefits and investment value may all depend on one company’s results. Vesting schedules, blackout periods, option expiration, exercise taxes and trading restrictions can make the position harder to reduce precisely when the company is under pressure. A qualified tax or investment professional can help with individualized decisions.

Behavioral protection is part of risk control

A written allocation is useful only if you can follow it during a decline. Panic selling converts a temporary market loss into a realized loss and can leave the portfolio without the assets needed for recovery. The opposite error—refusing to reduce a position because it once had a higher price—can preserve an unintended concentration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set the allocation and rebalancing rule during a calm period.
  • Use account alerts for drift and vesting events rather than checking headlines continuously.
  • Keep near-term spending money outside the assets you expect to recover over several years.
  • Separate a change in your financial plan from a short-term price prediction.
  • Review whether a technology holding still serves its intended role, rather than judging it only by its purchase price.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“I own five funds, so I am diversified.”

Problem: The funds may share the same top companies and benchmark concentration.

Correction: Inspect holdings, sector weights, country exposure and company size across every fund.

“I will sell after the next warning sign.”

Problem: Market timing requires two correct decisions and can lock in a loss after prices have already fallen.

Correction: Set target ranges and rebalance rules before the next decline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“All bonds are safe.”

Problem: Bond funds fluctuate with rates, duration, credit conditions and market liquidity.

Correction: Check the underlying securities, duration, credit quality, maturity profile and whether you can hold individual bonds to maturity.

“A broad index cannot be technology-heavy.”

Problem: Capitalization weighting can give the largest technology companies a large share of the index.

Correction: Read the current fact sheet and holdings report; compare the actual technology and top-company weights with your target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Diversification means I cannot lose money.”

Problem: Diversified portfolios can still decline when several asset classes or regions fall together.

Correction: Treat diversification as a way to reduce concentration and smooth results over time, not as a guarantee against loss.

A practical review checklist

  • Have I counted technology exposure inside every fund, retirement plan and employer program?
  • What percentage of the portfolio depends on the largest few companies?
  • Is my income tied to the same company or sector as my investments?
  • What money must be available within the next few years?
  • Do my stock, bond and cash targets match both my goal date and my ability to absorb a loss?
  • Are my bonds high quality, and have I checked duration and credit exposure?
  • Which new contributions can reduce concentration without creating an immediate tax bill?
  • What exact calendar date or percentage-point threshold triggers rebalancing?
  • Have I recorded taxes, fees, liquidity needs and account restrictions before trading?
  • What life change would require revisiting the plan?

There is no allocation that removes every risk from a technology-stock decline. The durable response is to measure overlapping exposure, diversify by genuinely different drivers, keep liquidity for near-term needs and rebalance to a target you selected for your own circumstances.
