Start by giving your PS5 Pro more room to breathe: move it out of an enclosed cabinet, keep its rear and bottom vents unobstructed, and leave at least 10 cm between the console and a wall. If a temperature warning appears, turn the console off and let it cool before using it again. Clean dust only with the AC cable disconnected. If warnings or shutdowns continue after these checks, contact PlayStation support for your region.
Why placement can make a difference
The PS5 Pro draws air in and exhausts it through openings at the rear and bottom, according to Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown. Those paths need open space: a closed cabinet, cramped shelf, cloth covering, or nearby heat source can make it harder for the console to shed heat. Sony’s PS5 Pro safety guide says to keep the console at least 10 cm from a wall and avoid placing it on a long-fibre carpet.
- Move the console to an open, well-ventilated area away from high temperatures.
- Leave at least 10 cm between the console and a wall.
- Keep the rear and bottom openings clear; do not cover the console or place it in a narrow, enclosed space.
- Avoid long-fibre carpet and check that the console is not beside a direct heat source.
Sony’s general PS5 noise guidance recommends 10 cm of free space around each side. For the Pro, Sony’s model-specific guidance establishes the 10 cm wall clearance and identifies the rear and bottom airflow paths; it does not give a separate measured clearance for every face.
How to clean dust safely
Dust around the vents can restrict airflow. Sony recommends using a handheld or low-powered vacuum to remove vent dust. Disconnect power first, and keep cleaning to the exterior and the cover areas described in the model-specific guide.

- Turn off the console and disconnect the AC power cable.
- Wait for the console to cool.
- Use a handheld, low-powered vacuum around the vent openings to collect accumulated dust.
- If you remove covers to clear dust underneath, follow the PS5 Pro safety guide’s cover-removal and reinstallation instructions. Refit each cover correctly before using the console.
Sony warns that incorrectly installed covers can contribute to overheating. Do not open internal assemblies or attempt routine repairs involving the fan or thermal materials: Sony says the console has no user-serviceable components inside and cautions against unauthorized modification.
What to do when a temperature warning appears
Stop playing and shut the console down rather than continuing while the warning is visible. Sony’s safety guide says: “If you see the message, turn off the console and wait until it cools down.” After it cools:

- Move it to a well-ventilated location away from high temperatures.
- Check that the vents are not blocked and that the console has adequate space around it.
- If an M.2 SSD is installed, check that its heat-dissipation parts have not detached.
Sony cautions that continuing to use the console after the warning may leave it non-operational. If the warning returns after the console has cooled and you have corrected any obvious airflow issue, contact PlayStation support.
Is a loud PS5 Pro fan normal?
A fan that becomes louder during a demanding game or application is not necessarily a fault. Sony’s general PS5 console noise guidance says the cooling fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system during some games and apps. That guidance covers the PS5 family; it is not a diagnosis of a Pro that displays a temperature warning or shuts down.

Sony’s teardown describes the Pro’s larger exhaust vent surface, dust catcher, and fan design. It is design context, not a measured noise or temperature comparison. As Tsuchida puts it in the teardown, “PS5 Pro is a high performing console, so it requires more air to cool it down.”

If heat warnings or abrupt shutdowns persist after improving placement and carefully removing accessible vent dust, use Sony’s official PS5 Pro troubleshooting page and contact support for your region. Sony lists overheating as a troubleshooting category and directs users to support specialists. The appropriate service route depends on your region; do not assume a particular repair price, warranty outcome, or turnaround time.
