There is no universal monthly cost or reliable break-even figure—electricity rates, ISP plans, equipment draw and hosting terms vary.
1. Right-size resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Start with the quality your content actually needs. A static gameplay menu, for example, may not benefit from the same settings as fast-moving gameplay. Lowering resolution or frame rate can let you use a lower bitrate, which reduces the upload capacity your stream requires. The trade-off is visible: choose the lowest settings that still look acceptable to your viewers.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate; for H.264, its table lists 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are starting recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or a promise of a particular cost saving. Check the current table before configuring your encoder: YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS ingest as recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Do not raise the bitrate automatically when a stream has problems. First check the connection, encoder settings and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Do not select a higher resolution simply because the encoder supports it; higher settings can require more upload capacity and encoding resources.
2. Test the connection and representative content
A speed test is a starting point, not proof that an always-on stream will remain stable. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and checking the stream while it runs. Test with the same kind of audio and motion you expect to broadcast: a static image does not reveal how well fast gameplay, scene changes or audio behave.

- Set the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate in your encoder.
- Run an upload speed test, then start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate for your setup.
- Play representative footage with audio and motion; watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio issues and encoder overload.
- During a live event, check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages rather than assuming a green-looking local preview means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. YouTube’s guidance is to monitor stream health during the event: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For API-based workflows, YouTube also documents configuration and health messages, including conditions where it is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming: LiveStream configuration issues and health status messages.
3. Consider a more efficient codec only if your whole workflow supports it
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says HEVC can provide 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality, and notes that lower-end suggested HEVC bitrates can save bandwidth. That is not a guaranteed reduction in your total bill: your encoder, ingest route and playback workflow must support HEVC, and you still need to verify quality and stability. 4. Calculate your actual local operating cost
Do not estimate from a generic “24/7 streaming cost” figure. Measure or obtain each input for your own location and equipment. A basic electricity estimate is:

Monthly electricity cost = average power in kW × operating hours × electricity price per kWh.
For continuous operation, use the actual hours in your billing period (roughly 24 hours per day), not an assumed universal month length. Measure the computer and any encoder hardware under the workload you intend to use; idle power can understate the cost. Apply your local tariff, including relevant fees if they are part of how you calculate household electricity.

- Electricity: measured average system draw and your local tariff.
- Internet: monthly ISP charge, upload limits, data caps or overage terms. A lower bitrate may help with capacity or data usage, but whether it changes the bill depends on your plan.
- Equipment: include hardware you would buy or replace specifically for streaming, while avoiding assigning the entire cost of a computer you already use to the stream.
- Maintenance: allow for your time handling updates, encoder failures, connection issues and recovery after a drop.
The sources here establish no standard electricity cost, ISP cost or total monthly cost for a continuous stream. Your utility tariff and internet contract are the relevant sources for those numbers.
