Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a compatible video on YouTube Live from Linux without re-encoding it, run FFmpeg on an always-on server with -stream_loop -1 and -c copy, sending the result to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding on your server, but it works only when the input streams can be muxed into the output; YouTube still transcodes the incoming stream for viewers.
What “without transcoding” means in this setup
FFmpeg’s -c copy passes compressed audio and video packets through rather than decoding and re-encoding them. That saves server CPU, but it also means FFmpeg cannot resize, filter, add overlays, or otherwise alter the media. The source’s codecs and container must be compatible with the chosen output. See the FFmpeg stream-copy documentation.
This does not eliminate transcoding from the delivery chain: YouTube says it automatically creates multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. “No transcoding” here refers only to your Linux relay, not YouTube’s processing. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Confirm live eligibility. The channel must have live streaming enabled and must not have a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live streaming guide describes getting started.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream using an encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key provided there. Use the exact endpoint and port supplied; do not assume a URL format.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or include it in screenshots or logs you share. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Instructions are in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Prefer RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection from your encoder to YouTube ingest. Use the RTMPS URL shown in the Live Control Room and ensure your FFmpeg build supports the required TLS. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Check the video before starting a long-running relay
Inspect the file and confirm which video and audio streams it contains, along with their codecs and container details. Confirm that those streams are suitable for the output you intend to send. Map the streams explicitly in the command below; if the file has no audio stream, remove the audio mapping rather than asking FFmpeg for a nonexistent stream. If the source cannot be muxed into the selected output, stream copy cannot fix that incompatibility. You will need a compatible source/output combination or to relax the no-transcoding requirement.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 10 Mbps. Check the current settings guidance for the profile you are using. With stream copy, FFmpeg does not change the source’s bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframes, so a source that does not meet the desired profile cannot be corrected by this command.
Loop the file to YouTube with FFmpeg
On the Linux host, set environment variables to the exact RTMPS base URL from Live Control Room and the matching stream key. Keep the key out of shell history where possible, and restrict access to any environment file used to store it. Then run this illustrative command with a compatible input file named loop.mp4:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i loop.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv
"$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. As an input option, it belongs before the relevant-i. See the FFmpeg option documentation.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream and-map 0:a:0selects the first audio stream.-c copyrequests stream copy, and-f flvselects the output muxer used for this example.- The final URL combines the RTMPS base URL and key according to the endpoint format shown by YouTube. Follow that exact format; an endpoint may already include path elements.
This is an example, not a command tested against every FFmpeg build, input, or YouTube endpoint. First test the complete path with a private or unlisted stream and check the preview, audio, motion, and stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends representative tests and monitoring during operation; see its encoder guide.
Keep the Linux process running and recover deliberately
For unattended use, run FFmpeg under a Linux service manager rather than relying on an interactive terminal. Configure it to start with the host and restart after a process exit, then inspect the manager’s logs and alert if ingest is unavailable for too long. A restart policy can relaunch a process, but it cannot repair an incompatible source, a wrong or revoked key, a network outage, or a YouTube account restriction. The YouTube guidance cited here recommends testing and monitoring; it does not provide a universal systemd unit or guarantee a particular 24/7 restart behavior.

Plan separately for connection recovery and the purpose of the stream. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is not a guarantee that one encoder session can run indefinitely or that a longer event will be archived. Check current Live Control Room status and account guidance before relying on an uninterrupted session. Decide whether you need a persistent live watch page, recurring sessions, or preserved VODs; continuous availability and an archive are different outcomes.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the output or reports a muxing error: the input streams may not be compatible with the selected output. Verify codecs and stream mapping. Stream copy cannot convert incompatible media; choose a compatible source or output, or allow transcoding.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm that the key is current and paired with the correct stream, and that the base URL and port exactly match Live Control Room. If the key may have leaked, reset it.
- An RTMPS connection fails with an SSL or TLS error: check that the URL uses the
rtmpsscheme, the endpoint and port are correct, and the installed FFmpeg build supports TLS. YouTube notes that port 443 may need to be specified in some SSL-error cases; follow its RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. - The stream starts but playback is wrong: inspect the Live Control Room preview and health indicators, then check the selected audio/video streams and their source properties. With
-c copy, filters, resizing, overlays, and codec changes are not applied. - The process exits and does not return: check service-manager logs and restart configuration, then determine whether the cause is a bad input, credentials, connectivity, or account eligibility. Restarting alone does not resolve those underlying failures.
