How to Reduce VPS Bandwidth for an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most direct way to reduce a VPS’s outbound traffic is to lower the bitrate FFmpeg sends to YouTube. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate, then test the picture and stream stability. Your actual bill depends on your VPS provider’s transfer allowance and metering rules, so check its usage meter rather than assuming a universal quota.

What drives VPS bandwidth use?

Your VPS sends one encoded ingest stream to YouTube. Its outgoing bitrate, multiplied by the time it runs, is the main driver of transfer volume. Resolution and frame rate affect how much bitrate is needed to maintain the picture quality you want.

YouTube transcodes an ingested live stream into different playback formats for viewers, so you do not need to send a separate feed from your VPS for each viewer rendition. YouTube explains this in its live encoder settings guidance.

Count all simultaneous outputs. If FFmpeg sends both a primary and a backup stream, both use outbound capacity; YouTube advises accounting for both when planning bandwidth. Its streaming tips also recommend leaving 20% upload headroom.

Estimate transfer before changing settings

A useful estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 ≈ decimal GB per hour. For example, an 8 Mbps stream uses about 3.6 GB per hour before protocol overhead and differences in provider metering. Multiply the estimate by the hours streamed, then compare it with the VPS provider’s own transfer meter and the plan’s definition of billable traffic.

This is an estimate, not a bill prediction: providers can count traffic differently, and a backup output or other VPS traffic adds to the total. The exact monthly cost cannot be calculated without the provider, plan, stream duration, and any overage terms.

Choose a lower bitrate without guessing blindly

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, verified against its help pages on October 3, 2026, provide starting points rather than universal minimums. You can test lower targets if your content and quality requirements allow, but check the resulting picture and stream health.

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate Estimated transfer per hour
720p at 30 or 60 fps 8 Mbps About 3.6 GB
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps About 6.3 GB
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps About 7.65 GB

The transfer estimates use the 0.45 GB-per-hour approximation and exclude protocol overhead and provider metering differences. YouTube’s table includes additional resolutions and AV1/H.265 recommendations; consult its current encoder settings table for those combinations. The listed H.264 figures are YouTube recommendations, not minimums for every kind of content.

Lower FFmpeg’s output bitrate

FFmpeg’s -b:v option sets the output video bitrate. Put output options after the input options and before the output URL, because FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. Set audio bitrate separately with -b:a if you also need to reduce audio traffic.

ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -b:v TARGET_VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate TARGET_VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize BUFFER_SIZE -c:a aac -b:a TARGET_AUDIO_BITRATE -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

This is a template, not a universal drop-in command. Replace the input, targets, and buffer size with values appropriate to your source, installed FFmpeg build, and chosen encoder. Keep the stream key secret; avoid sharing command logs or shell history that expose it. FFmpeg documents output bitrate control with -b:v in its documentation.

For a constant-bitrate workflow, configure the selected encoder accordingly; YouTube recommends CBR for its listed settings. A bitrate target alone does not guarantee that every encoder produces the same rate behavior. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Exact encoder options vary, so check the documentation for the encoder actually used by your FFmpeg build.

When lowering bitrate is not enough

Reduce resolution or frame rate if you need a larger reduction and can accept the corresponding change in playback. Less motion or a mostly static image may tolerate a lower bitrate, but only a representative test can establish whether the result is acceptable for your content.

Do not use -c copy as a bitrate-reduction option. It copies the encoded packets without decoding and encoding them, so it cannot lower their bitrate. Streamcopy is useful when the source already has suitable parameters and you want to avoid re-encoding; to change the rate, encode to a lower target or transform the video.

Check YouTube delivery and stream health

  1. Identify your current output bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio bitrate, and every simultaneous destination. Include a backup stream in your upload-capacity calculation if you send one.
  2. Choose the minimum resolution and frame rate you can accept, then select a trial bitrate. Use YouTube’s recommendations as starting points, not as guaranteed minimums.
  3. Set FFmpeg’s video output bitrate with -b:v and adjust audio separately if appropriate. Confirm the options occur before the output URL and are supported by your installed FFmpeg and encoder.
  4. Use a supported ingest format and configure the recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; encryption does not materially reduce the amount of media being sent. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  5. Test with representative movement and audio. Check YouTube’s incoming bitrate and stream health, then compare the provider’s transfer meter over a known interval.
  6. If the image is poor or delivery unstable, adjust gradually. Recheck both stream health and measured transfer after each change rather than assuming a lower target is acceptable.

Troubleshoot high transfer or unstable delivery

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Transfer stays high after changing a setting The changed option may not apply to the output, or another simultaneous feed may be sending traffic. Verify the effective output settings, option placement before the output URL, and the number of active outputs. Compare a known interval on the provider’s meter.
Picture quality falls too far The bitrate may be too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, or amount of motion. Test representative content; raise bitrate or reduce resolution/frame rate until the result meets your needs.
Stream health reports delivery problems The configured outgoing rate may leave too little upload headroom, or the connection may not sustain it. Check the VPS’s available upload capacity and total streams. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; test a lower outgoing rate if capacity is constrained.
Changing to RTMPS does not reduce the bill RTMPS encrypts the connection; it is not a bitrate-control method. Lower the encoded output rate or change resolution/frame rate if appropriate, then verify metered traffic.
The rate seems unchanged with -c copy Streamcopy preserves encoded packets and does not re-encode them. Use an encoding path with a lower output target if the source bitrate must change.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than managing an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This replaces VPS-based playback; it is not a way to lower the bitrate of an FFmpeg feed that you continue to send from your VPS. Start a free StreamNeo day.

Rights and YouTube policy still matter

Reducing bitrate does not change whether you have the rights to the video or audio you stream, or whether your channel’s content complies with YouTube’s rules. Use material you are entitled to stream and review YouTube’s current requirements for creating a live stream with an encoder at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
