For the standard refund offer on games and software bought through Steam, request it within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. If you are outside either limit, you can still ask; Valve reviews exceptions but does not guarantee approval.
Check eligibility before you request a refund
Start with the purchase date and the playtime Steam records. Then check what you bought: DLC, a gift, a subscription or another purchase type may follow different conditions. Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, last updated April 23, 2024, is the primary reference for the rules below.
- Was the purchase made on Steam, rather than through a third-party key seller or retailer?
- For a game or software application, was it bought within the last 14 days, and is playtime below two hours?
- For DLC or an in-game item, has it been consumed, modified or transferred, and how much time has passed?
- For a gift, is it still unredeemed, or can the recipient initiate the request?
These are the standard published conditions, not a promise that every request will be approved. Valve says it will consider requests outside its stated rules, and some jurisdictions may grant additional rights, including for faulty games.
How to submit a Steam refund request
- Go to Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Choose the relevant purchase and follow the refund or purchase-assistance options shown for it.
- Submit the request and provide the requested details. The exact support screen and labels may vary.
Steam Support is the route Valve specifies for refunds and purchase assistance. Use the purchase-specific choices shown there rather than assuming every item follows the game refund flow.

Refund rules by purchase type

| Steam-store DLC | Request within 14 days, with less than two hours played in the underlying game since the DLC purchase. The DLC must not have been consumed, modified or transferred. Some third-party DLC is marked nonrefundable before purchase. |
| In-game purchases | For Valve games, request within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified or transferred. Third-party developers may opt in; Steam indicates availability at purchase. |
| Pre-release titles | The 14-day period begins on the release date. Early Access and Advance Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. If a preorder cannot be played before release, it can be requested for refund any time before release. |
| Steam Wallet funds | Request within 14 days if the funds were purchased on Steam and none have been used. |

Early Access, preorders and playtime
For a game bought before release, the 14-day refund period starts on its release date. Time spent playing in Early Access or Advance Access still counts toward the two-hour limit, so early access does not create a separate playtime allowance. If a preordered game cannot be played before release, you may request a refund any time before release.

How long an approved refund takes and where it goes
Valve says an approved refund is issued within a week of approval. It can go to your Steam Wallet or the original payment method. Availability of a return to the original method depends on the payment method, country and transaction; if that method cannot receive the refund, Valve credits the Steam Wallet instead. The one-week period is after approval, not a guarantee that the entire review will finish within a week.
When the purchase was made just before a sale
Valve says requesting a refund for a game bought just before a sale and then immediately rebuying it at the lower price is not abuse. More generally, Valve may stop offering refunds if it considers the process abused; its policy frames refunds as a way to remove purchase risk, not to obtain free games.

Where to check for account-specific or local rules
Steam Support applies the process to the purchase on your account. For jurisdiction-specific consumer rights or a game that does not work as promised, the published policy notes that additional rights may apply in some places. Consult the official Steam Refunds policy and submit the request through Steam Support.
