Start with the mod page’s disclosure and tags, then check exactly what they describe: the downloadable mod, its promotional materials, or both. On Nexus Mods, authors must use separate tags for AI-generated content, AI media, and limited AI assistance. Those labels are useful evidence, but neither an absent tag nor an unusual-looking asset proves whether AI was used.
First identify where the mod is hosted
Disclosure rules depend on the host. Nexus Mods’ rules apply to listings on Nexus Mods; do not assume they govern mods hosted elsewhere or content distributed through an official publisher channel. Check the relevant platform’s current policy before drawing a conclusion.
For Fallout 4, Nexus Mods’ guidance distinguishes official Creation Club content from other Verified Creator content, which it treats as unofficial for that policy. The distinction matters when deciding which rules apply. Nexus Mods’ Fallout 4 guidance explains that scope.
What Nexus Mods’ three AI tags mean
Nexus Mods’ File Submission Guidelines, last updated September 29, 2026, require specific tags when generative AI is used in a mod or its page. The categories separate substantial generated content from page media and limited assistance. Read the current File Submission Guidelines.

Check the page and the downloadable mod separately
A thumbnail, trailer, or description can use AI without establishing that the downloadable Fallout or Call of Duty mod contains AI-generated assets. Conversely, a page with ordinary-looking media may still disclose generated dialogue, code, textures, or other in-game content. Treat the page materials and the mod files as separate questions.
When a disclosure is broad, identify the component it actually names. Nexus Mods’ examples include code, UI, voices, dialogue, translation, music, and in-game assets. A useful assessment says, for example, that an author disclosed AI-generated voice lines; it does not simply label the entire mod “AI.”

How to assess an “AI-assisted” claim
On Nexus Mods, “AI Assisted” is intended for work led by the developer with limited AI involvement. The guidelines call for significant evidence of development and demonstrated knowledge of the code or content. They give examples such as project-file history, version-control commit history, evidence of human-led design, and genuine expertise in how the code functions. Such records may need to be explained in a moderation dispute; a mod page is not guaranteed to publish them.
Use the claim as a starting point, not proof in itself. Check whether the author identifies what AI did and whether available process evidence supports the description. If those details are absent, say that the extent of assistance is unclear rather than treating “AI-assisted” as self-explanatory.

What tags, oddities, and detectors can establish
- A disclosed tag is relevant evidence of the author’s stated use and category. It is not independent forensic verification of every file.
- No AI tag does not certify that a mod is AI-free. Nexus Mods places responsibility on authors to accurately tag their pages and says incorrect or undisclosed generative-AI use may lead to moderation. Its guideline states: “Mod authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy of all claims made on their mod page, including content generated or assisted by third-party tools (such as generative AI).” Nexus Mods File Submission Guidelines.
- An unusual image, voice, line of dialogue, or code fragment can prompt a question, but an oddity alone does not establish AI use.
- A detector score should not be presented as a finding. The cited official guidance sets out disclosure and evidence expectations, but does not validate image, voice, text, or code detectors for game mods.
Nexus Mods’ 2023 announcement provides historical context: it said AI-generated mod content was not categorically against its rules at that time and discussed removal after credible complaints from affected creators or rights holders. It also urged creators to secure permission for assets, particularly generated voice acting. For current tagging requirements, use the later File Submission Guidelines, not the 2023 announcement. Keep download security separate from AI provenance
Nexus Mods’ file badges report security checks and virus-scan or review status in the Files tab. The platform describes green, blue, white, yellow, and red indicators according to scan and review status. These badges concern security and scan coverage; they do not identify whether AI generated a file. A passed scan is not an authorship certificate, and a pending or failed scan is not evidence of AI use. See Nexus Mods’ file status guidance.

A practical checklist for a specific mod
- Confirm the host and item. Check whether it is a Nexus Mods listing, a page on another community host, or official in-game or publisher-channel content. Apply the host’s own current rules.
- Read the disclosure and tags. On Nexus Mods, look for AI-Generated Content, AI Media, and AI Assisted. Note which category appears and what the author says it covers.
- Separate page media from in-game content. Inspect the description, thumbnail, and video as page materials; then look for statements about the downloadable files and in-game features.
- Name the affected part. If the page identifies generated dialogue, voice, code, translation, music, UI, or assets, describe that specific component instead of making an unsupported claim about the whole mod.
- Check process evidence for limited assistance. For an AI-assisted claim, look for development history, version-control records, human-led design, and evidence of relevant expertise where available.
- Keep your wording proportionate to the evidence. Distinguish the author’s disclosure from independently corroborated facts. If something only looks unusual, frame it as an unanswered question.
- Use the host’s reporting route for a suspected misclassification. Nexus Mods says incorrect tags, including undisclosed generative-AI use, may lead to moderation. Follow its current reporting guidance and avoid public accusations unsupported by evidence.
Comparing two mods fairly
Compare the evidence before judging aesthetics or quality. Keep each factor distinct so a tag, a security badge, or one generated thumbnail does not stand in for the whole picture.
