Open Steam Support, select the purchase, describe the specific group-blocking failure, and submit the request. Steam’s standard rule for games is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of recorded playtime. Those limits include online, offline, and shared-library use, and meeting them does not guarantee approval.
The short answer
Use Steam’s official refund workflow at Steam Help. Sign in with the purchasing account, open Purchases, select the game transaction, choose the problem that best fits, and then select I’d like to request a refund. Explain exactly why the group could not use the game together: for example, it repeatedly fails to launch, members cannot join the same session, or a feature presented as available does not work.

Steam reviews the transaction belonging to the signed-in customer. It does not provide one “group refund” form. If several people bought their own copies, each buyer must submit a separate request from their own account. If one person bought a gift, the recipient has a special role described below.
Valve’s published policy says it will issue a refund when the request is made within the required return period and, for games, the title has been played for less than two hours. The standard period is two weeks from purchase. Valve also says it may review requests outside those limits, but an exception is discretionary rather than automatic.

Eligibility for a game that fails in group play
A multiplayer failure can be a legitimate reason to ask for a refund, but Steam still evaluates the purchase under its refund rules. The clearest position is when both standard thresholds are met:

The two-hour figure is not a multiplayer-only measurement. Testing matchmaking, attempting to join friends, waiting through failed launches, and playing alone can all contribute to the recorded total. A shared-library session also counts, so do not assume that using another household member’s library gives you a fresh allowance.

Valve says it will look at requests outside the described rules, while also warning that repeated abuse of refunds can result in refunds no longer being offered. A technical problem or a title that does not work as represented is worth explaining, but neither circumstance creates an automatic exception.
Submit the request through Steam Support
Steam says all refund requests are handled through help.steampowered.com. Use this sequence so the request is attached to the correct transaction.

- Sign in to the purchasing account. Open Steam Help and log in to the account that paid for the game. If you are asking about a copy bought by someone else, do not select a different account’s unrelated purchase.
- Open Purchases. From the signed-in support area, choose Purchases. Steam displays transactions associated with that account.
- Select the game transaction. Choose the exact purchase, not a different edition, downloadable item, or unrelated charge. The date and item shown in the transaction help you verify that you have selected the correct copy.
- Choose the closest problem description. Select the issue that best reflects what happened. A launch failure, connection problem, or missing advertised feature should be described accurately rather than forced into an unrelated category.
- Choose “I’d like to request a refund.” This opens the refund form for that purchase. Steam’s How To Request A Refund page documents this route.
- Write a factual explanation. State what the group attempted, what failed, when it failed, and whether the problem was repeatable. Include the number of players affected only when you know it. Do not claim a feature was missing unless the store description or game presentation led you to expect it.
- Select the destination offered by Steam. The form may offer Steam Wallet or the original payment method. Some payment methods in some countries cannot return funds to the original method, so the available choices can vary.
- Submit and keep the confirmation. Steam sends confirmation and, later, a decision email. Save the transaction details and the description you submitted in case you need to check the status.
Submitting a request is not the same as receiving approval. Steam’s system evaluates the purchase, playtime, timing, payment route, and other applicable conditions after submission.
How to describe a group-blocking failure
The explanation field should help a support reviewer understand why the purchase did not deliver the multiplayer experience you expected. Keep it short enough to scan, but specific enough to distinguish a reproducible failure from general dissatisfaction.

Include the essential facts
- The purchase date or an approximate date, if it helps establish the 14-day window.
- The action the group tried, such as launching a cooperative session, joining through an invite, or entering the same server.
- The observable result: a crash, an error message, an endless connection attempt, a missing lobby, or an advertised function that was unavailable.
- Whether the same failure happened repeatedly and to more than one member.
- How much of the available playtime was spent testing the issue, without exaggerating or omitting relevant use.
Example wording
“I bought this game on [date] to play its advertised cooperative mode with two friends. The game launches, but each attempt to join the same session fails at the connection step, and we reproduced the failure several times. We could not use the multiplayer feature we bought it for. Please review this purchase for a refund.”
Replace the bracketed date with the real date before submitting. Do not present the example as proof that Steam will approve the request; it is a model for a clear, verifiable description. If the problem is a crash, identify when it occurs. If the feature works only intermittently, say that instead of calling it completely unavailable.
When different people bought copies
Every buyer submits their own request
If three friends each purchased the game, there are three separate transactions. Each friend should sign in to the account used for that purchase, select the relevant transaction, and submit an individual request. Steam’s policy does not define a group refund, and one person cannot request a refund for another buyer’s copy.

Each account’s purchase date and recorded playtime are considered separately. One person might remain within the standard limits while another has exceeded them, so do not assume that one approval determines the others’ outcomes.
One person bought a gift
For a redeemed gift, the recipient initiates the refund request under Steam’s policy. If Steam approves it, the funds return to the original purchaser rather than becoming credit for the recipient. The recipient should therefore coordinate with the person who paid before submitting the request.
An unredeemed gift follows a different route. Steam’s policy distinguishes unredeemed gifts from redeemed ones and still applies the relevant timing and playtime conditions. Select the gift-related purchase in the account that made the transaction and follow the option Steam presents rather than treating it as a normal self-purchase.
One person bought a single copy for library sharing
If friends or household members only accessed the game through Steam’s library-sharing feature, the account that bought the game must request the refund. The other users did not make the transaction and cannot independently refund it. Steam Support states that shared-library playtime counts toward the two-hour limit, so all relevant use can affect the purchasing account’s eligibility.
Purchases with different rules
The standard game rule is not a universal rule for every Steam charge. Steam’s refund policy has separate conditions for categories such as downloadable content and bundles. Select the exact transaction and read the conditions shown for that item instead of assuming that a base game rule applies unchanged.

Downloadable content
A DLC refund can depend on when it was bought, how long the underlying game or content was used, and whether the DLC has been consumed or transferred. The applicable conditions are shown in Steam’s policy and support workflow. Do not submit a base-game explanation for a DLC transaction unless it accurately describes that purchase.
Bundles
Bundles can contain several products and may have bundle-specific requirements. Open the bundle transaction, review which items are included, and use the request option Steam provides for that purchase. If the group problem concerns one component, identify that component precisely.
Purchases made outside Steam
Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party Steam Wallet cards. A key bought from another seller, a code supplied by a retailer, or an external wallet transaction must be addressed to the seller that processed the payment. Steam Support can only evaluate purchases attached to the Steam transaction history.

Submit the request if the game has a substantial, factual problem or does not work as represented, even when the normal thresholds have passed. In the explanation, state the purchase date, total recorded playtime as shown by Steam, the group activity that failed, and the steps that reproduced the issue. Avoid claiming that the request is automatically covered; ask Steam to review the circumstances.

It also notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights when a game is faulty. Those rights depend on where you live and the transaction’s legal context, so consult applicable local consumer guidance for a jurisdiction-specific answer.

Do not repeatedly buy, play, and refund games as a way to avoid paying. Steam says it may stop offering refunds if it considers the process abused. A genuine technical failure and an attempt to use the refund system as a free trial are treated differently.
Where the money goes and how long it takes
For an approved refund, Steam says the funds are issued within a week through Steam Wallet or the original payment method, subject to payment-method limitations. Steam Support clarifies that the refund can take up to seven days to appear, international payment methods may take longer, and Steam Wallet credit can take 24–48 hours.

The destination is not always selectable. Some payment methods in some countries cannot receive a return to the original method, in which case Steam may offer Steam Wallet instead.
What to do after submitting
Check the confirmation email
Steam sends a confirmation after the request is submitted and a later message with the decision. Verify that the email identifies the same game and account you intended to use. If no message arrives, sign back in to Steam Support and review the purchase history rather than submitting duplicate requests immediately.
Wait through the stated processing period
An approval does not necessarily mean the balance changes instantly. Allow the stated seven-day period for the payment route, remembering that Wallet credit may arrive sooner and international methods can take longer. Check the payment account or Steam Wallet, not only the game library.
Contact the bank only for a delayed approved refund
If Steam has approved the refund and seven days have passed without the funds appearing, Steam Support’s guidance is to contact the bank about pending refunds. For a released authorization, the bank may show the amount disappearing from pending charges rather than posting a conventional credit.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the wrong account: Sign in to the account that paid for the purchase. A friend’s account cannot refund your transaction.
- Ignoring shared playtime: Online, offline, and shared-library use count toward the two-hour limit. Check the recorded playtime before assuming you qualify.
- Submitting a vague reason: “It did not work” gives little context. Name the failed group action and the repeatable result.
- Assuming a group refund exists: Multiple buyers must make separate requests; a gift recipient and purchaser have different roles.
- Choosing the wrong transaction: Confirm whether you selected the base game, DLC, bundle, or gift purchase.
- Expecting an exception: Requests outside the normal limits can be reviewed, but Steam does not promise approval.
- Expecting instant money: Wallet and bank processing times differ. An approved refund may take up to seven days to appear.
- Trying to refund an external purchase through Steam: Steam cannot refund purchases made outside its own transaction system.
- Submitting inflated claims: Keep the explanation accurate. Overstating the problem can undermine a request and repeated abuse can affect future refund access.
A practical checklist before you click Submit
- Confirm you are signed in to the account that paid for the copy.
- Record the purchase date and the game’s current recorded playtime.
- Remember that online, offline, and shared-library playtime all count.
- Identify whether the purchase is a self-purchase, redeemed gift, unredeemed gift, bundle, DLC, or external code.
- Write one or two sentences describing the group activity that failed and the observable result.
- Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method only from the options Steam displays.
- Submit through Steam Help and retain the confirmation.
- If approved, allow up to seven days for the money to appear, with 24–48 hours common for Steam Wallet credit.
Bottom line
Request the refund from the purchasing Steam account, explain the specific multiplayer failure, and submit through Steam Support. The normal game thresholds are within 14 days and under two hours of total recorded playtime, including shared use. Outside those limits, an honest technical-failure request is still possible but discretionary. Approved refunds generally return through Steam Wallet or the original payment route, and the funds may take up to seven days to appear.
