To request a refund, sign in to Steam Support, open Purchases, select the game and the issue, then choose I’d like to request a refund and submit the form. For games and software applications bought on the Steam Store, Valve’s standard refund offer applies when you request within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. You can still submit a request outside those limits, but approval is not guaranteed.
How to request a refund on Steam
- Go to Steam Support and sign in to the account that bought the game.
- Select Purchases.
- Choose the game you want refunded. If it is not listed, Steam says it may be outside the refund window.
- Select the option that best describes the problem.
- Choose I’d like to request a refund, then complete the form.
- If offered, choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method, then submit. Steam sends a confirmation email after submission and another when the refund has been processed.
Steam’s standard refund conditions
For games and software applications sold on the Steam Store, Valve’s standard offer covers requests made within 14 days of purchase when the title has been played for less than two hours. The policy was last updated on 23 April 2024. Read the current Steam Refunds policy for its terms.

These are the standard conditions, not a bar on submitting a request. Valve says it will review requests made outside them, but that does not promise a refund. If you have played for two hours or more, or it has been more than 14 days, explain the issue clearly in the request.

Check the game’s Steam Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements. If a Steam Store purchase does not support your operating system, Steam Support says to use the normal refund request process. See its platform availability guidance.

If the game is listed as compatible but still fails to launch, choose the issue that best matches what is happening and describe the failure in the refund form. You do not have to buy new hardware or paid repair software just to submit a refund request.
If you bought a key somewhere other than Steam
Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys. Contact the retailer that sold you the key and check its refund policy. Steam’s refund process applies to purchases made through the Steam Store.

Where the money goes and when
For an approved refund, Valve says it is issued within a week. Depending on the payment method and available options, the refund may go to your Steam Wallet or back to the original payment method. Some payment methods cannot return funds to the original method, so Steam may offer Wallet credit instead. The exact date funds appear in a bank or payment account can vary.

You can ask Steam to review a request even if it falls outside the 14-day and two-hour conditions; approval is not assured. Valve also notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights when a game is faulty. Those rights depend on where you live and the circumstances, so consult the rules that apply in your jurisdiction if you need a legal answer.
