To request a refund for an Xbox digital game or app bought from Microsoft, sign in to the Xbox digital-game refund page with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. Select the item, choose Request a refund, give a reason, and submit. Microsoft says review may take up to 72 hours; that is separate from the time it takes an approved refund to reach your payment method.
Request a refund for a digital Xbox purchase
- Open Microsoft’s Request a refund for digital games page and sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the game or app.
- Find and select the purchase, then choose Request a refund.
- Provide the requested reason and submit the request. Check the page for the eligibility decision; Microsoft’s accessible general refund guidance does not specify Xbox-specific purchase-age or play-time thresholds.
Microsoft says online returns are not available in every market. If the online request route is unavailable where you are, contact Microsoft Sales Support.

What purchases this process covers
This route is for digital Xbox games and apps purchased from Microsoft. It is not the process for a physical console or accessory, or for an item bought from another retailer. Microsoft says individual items inside a bundle cannot be returned through this flow, and it does not accept returns for purchases made from another retailer.
For physical Microsoft Store products, including Xbox hardware, use the separate Microsoft Store return process. For a purchase from another shop, contact that retailer about its return policy.

How long an Xbox refund takes

Check the refund status
Open your Microsoft account’s Order history, find the Xbox purchase, and check its refund status. Microsoft distinguishes the status of the refund itself from the time your bank or payment provider takes to post an issued refund.

Contact Microsoft Support if you have a specific problem with the game or app, or a billing concern. A chargeback is a dispute raised through your bank or payment institution, not the Xbox refund-request flow. Microsoft warns that repeated misuse of chargebacks may be considered fraud; contact support first about a purchase issue.

Refund rights can also depend on local law. Microsoft’s U.S.-presented support guidance notes that availability of online returns varies by market, and its Australia-specific notice says the information does not affect remedies under Australian Consumer Law.
