To reinstall a 7 Days to Die dedicated server safely, stop it cleanly, copy the complete save and mod data somewhere outside the installation folder, reinstall or validate Steam app 294420 with SteamCMD, recreate your configuration, restore the files, match the client and server branch, and test the server before inviting players back. The installation contains downloaded binaries; your world, player data, mods, and custom settings must be protected separately.

What a reinstall changes—and what it must not change

A dedicated-server reinstall replaces the server program files. It should not remove your world or player progress when those files have been backed up and restored deliberately. The dedicated server is distributed as Steam app 294420; the normal player game is app 251570. Installing or validating the player client does not install the dedicated server.

Your most important data is normally outside the binaries, but its exact location depends on the operating system, launch parameters, host panel, and configuration. Treat the following as separate backup sets:

  • World and player data: the complete Saves/<world>/<game> tree, including every file beneath it.
  • Mods: the entire Mods directory, including subfolders and configuration files supplied by each mod.
  • Server configuration: your custom XML file, normally copied from the shipped serverconfig.xml.
  • Administration and automation: admin lists, permission files, ban lists, launch scripts, scheduled-task or service definitions, and any environment files used by the server.
  • Hosting-panel settings: startup arguments, allocated ports, branch selection, environment variables, and scheduled restart or backup rules.

A backup stored inside the directory you plan to delete is not a backup. Copy it to another disk, a remote machine, or external storage and verify that it can be opened before removing the old installation.

Choose validation or a clean reinstall

Reinstalling is not always the best first move. If the symptoms are missing or corrupted downloaded files, validate the existing installation in place. Validation keeps the current directory and normally causes less downtime and less risk to configuration. A clean reinstall is appropriate when the binary installation is badly damaged, contains unexplained leftovers, or you want a known-empty program directory after preserving your data.

Approach Best for Data-loss risk Downtime Configuration handling
Validation in place Missing, modified, or corrupted server binaries Lower, provided saves and configuration are still backed up Usually shorter Existing files remain; still keep a copy because validation concerns program files, not your recovery plan
Clean reinstall An irreparably damaged installation or a deliberate reset of program files High if the save and configuration directories are deleted with it Longer because files are downloaded again and settings restored Recreate or copy a custom XML and restore administration files manually

Neither method repairs a bad save, an incompatible mod, or a client/server build mismatch. Those problems require separate troubleshooting after the binaries are healthy.

Before stopping the server: make a recovery record

Announce the maintenance window and record the details needed to reproduce the current setup. Write down the installation path, save path, operating-system account that runs the service, selected stable or experimental branch, custom XML filename, installed mods, startup arguments, and game and query ports. On a hosted panel, capture screenshots or export the startup configuration before pressing a reinstall button.

Ask players not to remain connected while you stop the process. A clean shutdown lets the server flush world and player changes. Killing the process during a save operation can leave a backup that is already incomplete.

Back up the world, mods, and settings

Self-hosted Windows or Linux

  1. Stop the dedicated-server process or its service and wait until the console and log show that shutdown has completed.
  2. Locate the complete Saves directory and copy the entire world/game tree, not only files that look recently changed. Preserve the directory names and capitalization.
  3. Copy the complete Mods directory. A partial mod backup can allow the world to start while producing missing-content errors or altered behavior.
  4. Copy the custom XML configuration, admin and permission files, ban lists, launch scripts, and service definitions. Also record any settings passed as command-line arguments rather than stored in XML.
  5. Place the backup outside the server installation directory. Create a dated folder and, if possible, make a second copy on another device or remote location.
  6. Open the copied directories and check that the expected world files, mod folders, and XML files are present. Do not proceed to deletion until this check succeeds.

On Linux, preserve ownership and permissions as well as file contents. The account that runs the service must be able to read the restored world and write new saves, logs, and player data. Do not run the game server as root merely to bypass a permissions error.

Managed hosting

Download the backup through the panel’s file manager or SFTP before using a reinstall or reset control. Panel labels and paths vary, so do not assume that a button named “reinstall” preserves data. Download the world save, Mods, custom XML, admin files, and a copy of the startup settings. Keep the downloaded archive on your own storage until the new instance has been tested.

Install or validate Steam app 294420 with SteamCMD

SteamCMD is the documented installer and updater for the dedicated server on Windows and Linux. Install SteamCMD separately, choose a fixed server directory, and run the app-update command from a shell or script. Replace the path placeholder with the directory you selected:

+force_install_dir <server-path> +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit

The validate argument checks the downloaded files after updating. It is useful for repairing an existing installation and is also a sensible integrity check after a clean download. The command must target app 294420, not app 251570.

Windows considerations

  • Install SteamCMD in a location with enough free space for the server and temporary update files.
  • Run the command from a batch file or terminal, then confirm that SteamCMD reports completion without an update error.
  • Keep the server directory separate from the SteamCMD program directory if that makes backups and permissions easier.

Linux considerations

  • Create a dedicated, non-root service account and a fixed installation directory.
  • Run SteamCMD as that account, or correct ownership after installation so the service account can update and write the server.
  • Keep the installation, save backup, and service files in clearly separate paths; this reduces the chance that a cleanup command removes the backup.

Protect settings with a custom XML file

Do not rely on the shipped serverconfig.xml as your only configuration. Copy it to a custom name such as myserver.xml, apply your settings there, and launch the server with that file. A custom filename helps prevent future server updates from overwriting your tuned values.

Restore the values you recorded before the reinstall, including world and game names, difficulty and gameplay settings, player limits, visibility, passwords, ports, and any options required by your mods. If a setting was supplied in startup arguments rather than XML, restore that argument in the service, batch file, or hosting panel as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep one known-good copy of the custom XML outside the installation directory. If a later update replaces shipped files, you can point the launch command back to your custom file without rebuilding every setting.

Restore the saved world and mods

  1. Stop the newly installed server before copying data into it.
  2. Find the new server’s expected Saves location and copy the backed-up world/game tree into it. Preserve the original hierarchy: the world directory must contain the game directory and all of its files.
  3. Copy the backed-up Mods directory into the server’s expected location. Merge only when you are certain the destination contains no conflicting version; replacing the fresh directory with the verified backup is less ambiguous.
  4. Restore the custom XML, admin lists, permissions, bans, launch scripts, and service or panel settings.
  5. On Linux, set ownership and permissions so the service account can read every restored file and write to the save and log locations.
  6. On a managed host, upload through the panel or SFTP, then select the restored custom XML and startup arguments in the panel before starting.

Do not open and resave world files in a text editor. Preserve filenames, extensions, directory names, and timestamps where practical. If you intentionally changed the server’s installation path, update the service or launch script to point at the new path rather than copying an old absolute path blindly.

  • Perfect DND Gift for Players & Collectors The bold silver and red enamel combination is ideal for barbarians, fighters, or rogues – a great D&D gift for dice goblins, DND lovers, and TTRPG players

Match the client and server branch and build

Select the same branch on the dedicated server and every player’s client: for example, the same stable release or the same experimental branch. The executable build must also match. A server updated to one branch while clients remain on another can reject connections even when the world files are intact.

After SteamCMD finishes, record the installed build shown by the server or update output. Have a test player verify the client branch and update before attempting a public connection. Mods may impose additional version requirements, so check that the restored mod set is intended for the selected build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the server and verify the restoration

  1. Start the server with the custom XML filename and the intended startup arguments.
  2. Watch the console and log from startup through world loading. Stop and investigate any save, permission, missing-mod, XML, or port error rather than allowing a damaged start to overwrite the backup.
  3. Confirm that the expected world name and game name load. A newly generated world or default settings usually means the save path or configuration path is wrong.
  4. Join locally or from a test client. Verify the map, structures, containers, player levels, inventories, quests, and other progress that matter to your group.
  5. Test each restored mod feature that affects saved data. Missing or disabled mods can make a world appear incomplete even when the save copy is correct.
  6. Check the configured game and query ports, host firewall rules, router/NAT forwarding, and the address players use. Reinstalling binaries does not automatically recreate network rules.
  7. Only after the test succeeds should you announce that the server is back online and remove the old installation.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The server starts a new world

Stop it immediately so it does not create more files in the wrong location. Compare the configured save path with the path where you restored the backup, check the world and game directory names, and confirm that the custom XML was actually used at launch. A panel may have a separate data directory from the visible installation directory.

Players cannot connect after reinstalling

Check that client and server branches and builds match first. Then verify the server is listening on the configured ports, the host firewall allows them, and the router forwards them to the correct machine. Confirm that the server is bound to the expected interface and that players are using the current public address or hostname.

World loading reports missing files or errors

Confirm that the entire save tree was copied, not just a single file. Check Linux ownership and write permissions, then inspect the log for a mod named in the error. Restore the exact mod set that created the save, or remove a mod only after making another backup and understanding its effect on saved blocks and entities.

Settings reverted to defaults

The server likely launched with the shipped XML or a panel-generated configuration instead of your custom file. Recheck the launch argument, filename, path, and panel startup command. Restore command-line settings separately; they are not necessarily represented in the XML.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamCMD validation does not solve the problem

Validation repairs downloaded program files; it does not repair a damaged world, install missing third-party mods, fix permissions, or reconcile an incompatible branch. Restore from the verified backup, correct the relevant configuration, and then perform a clean reinstall only if the binary installation remains suspect.

When managed hosting is the better option

A managed 7 Days to Die host can remove operating-system maintenance, firewall administration, and service supervision. It is useful when you want a control panel for restarts and file transfers rather than shell access. Before migrating, confirm that the host permits the mods you need, provides access to the complete Saves and Mods directories, supports downloading backups, lets you select the required branch, and exposes the ports and startup settings your server uses.

Self-hosting gives you direct filesystem, service, port, and backup control but requires you to maintain SteamCMD, operating-system updates, permissions, firewall rules, and recovery copies. Whichever model you choose, keep an independent backup; a provider’s reinstall control is not a substitute for one.

Safe reinstall checklist

  • Downtime announced and players disconnected.
  • Server stopped cleanly.
  • Complete Saves/<world>/<game> copied outside the installation directory.
  • Complete Mods directory copied.
  • Custom XML, admin files, launch scripts, service settings, and panel startup options saved.
  • Backup opened and verified on separate storage.
  • Validation attempted when the problem may be limited to binaries.
  • SteamCMD pointed to app 294420, with validate used.
  • Custom XML filename selected so updates do not overwrite it.
  • Restored files owned and writable by the Linux service account when applicable.
  • Client and server branch and build matched.
  • World, player data, mods, logs, and network connectivity tested before going live.

Final decision

Use validation in place for a likely binary-file problem, and use a clean reinstall only after a verified external backup. The reliable sequence is stop, copy the complete saves and mods, preserve configuration, install app 294420, launch with a custom XML, restore the data, match versions, and test the world before deleting the old directory. Following that order lets you replace a damaged server installation without sacrificing the world your players built.
