To reinstall PS4 system software, download Sony’s dedicated reinstallation file—not the ordinary update file—copy it to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive in PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP, then install it through Safe Mode. This process erases all data on the console, so back up anything you need before starting.
Choose the right file: update or reinstallation
Sony provides separate USB downloads for a normal system software update and a full reinstallation. Use the ordinary update file to update the software. Use the larger-purpose recovery workflow described here only when you need to reinstall the system software; Sony identifies Safe Mode reinstallation as a last troubleshooting step. Prepare the USB drive
- On a PC or Mac, format a USB storage drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder at the root of the drive named
PS4, then create a folder inside it namedUPDATE. Use the exact spelling and capitalization. - Download the PS4 reinstallation file from Sony’s official system software page. Save the file in the
UPDATEfolder with this exact filename:PS4UPDATE.PUP. The finished path should bePS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP.
Sony’s download page separates the ordinary update and reinstallation options. Check that you chose the reinstallation download before copying it. The current version and file size are not specified in the cited instructions; use the live file offered by Sony rather than relying on an old copy or an unverified download.
Reinstall the software from Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS4 completely.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep; Sony says this takes at least seven seconds. This starts Safe Mode.
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the console.
- Select Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) and follow the on-screen prompts. Do not select a regular update option for this procedure.
Keep the console powered on throughout installation. Sony warns that interrupting the process can damage the system.

Understand the data loss before you begin
PlayStation Support states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS4 console will delete all of the data on your PS4 console.” This is a full-console data deletion, not just a system software refresh. Preserve any needed data before proceeding. Sony’s instructions do not establish a typical installation time or success rate, so allow the process to finish without relying on a predicted duration.

- The PS4 does not find the reinstallation file: Confirm the folder path is exactly
PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP, including capitalization, and verify that you downloaded Sony’s reinstallation file rather than the ordinary update file. - The console does not recognize the USB drive: Check that it is connected properly. If needed, Sony advises initializing the USB storage on a PC and trying again. Ensure it is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT before repeating the setup.
- The reinstall still fails: Sony says the console may need repair. Its CE-34788-0 support page also addresses a PS4 system software file error.
Download system software only from Sony and follow Sony’s documented installation method. Do not turn off the PS4 or remove power while installation is in progress.
