How to Release Animals in Planet Zoo 2: Reserve Choice, Ecosystem Setup, and Requirements

Releasing animals in Planet Zoo 2 requires researched species, completed conservation work, an eligible release group, and a restored ecosystem in a compatible Wildlife Reserve. Here is how to choose the reserve and diagnose blocked releases.

Releasing an animal in Planet Zoo 2 is described as a progression task rather than a single button press. You research the species with your zoo’s vets, complete the relevant conservation work, assemble a release group that meets the displayed requirements, prepare a compatible ecosystem in a Wildlife Reserve, and then release the eligible animals. The pre-launch guidance available on October 13, 2026 names longevity, fertility, and genetic diversity as possible requirements, but does not publish numerical thresholds.

Reserve choice matters just as much. A species must have a suitable reserve and ecosystem; the guide says that not every species can be released everywhere. Because the published material is a conceptual pre-launch checklist rather than a tested launch-build walkthrough, exact menu labels, prompts, thresholds, and species-to-reserve matches should be checked in your current game version.

What releasing an animal involves

Wildlife Reserve release is presented as the conservation end of a zoo-management loop. Animals do not become eligible merely because they are healthy or because you own a pair. The reported sequence links four kinds of progress:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Species knowledge: zoo vets must research the species.
  • Conservation progress: you take on projects tied to release requirements.
  • Animal eligibility: the selected animal or group must satisfy the requirements shown for that species.
  • Reserve readiness: the destination ecosystem must be suitable and restored.

The guide describes a release group as potentially a single animal, a breeding pair, or a larger group, depending on the species. It specifically gives longevity, fertility, and genetic diversity as examples of checks the game may apply. It does not establish universal minimum values, so do not treat any unofficial number as a confirmed rule.

The following workflow reflects a pre-launch guide updated October 11, 2026. The guide warns that details can change after release, and the launch article dated October 12 placed the planned release on October 13 at 7 AM PT, 3 PM BST, and 4 PM CEST for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Those dates do not verify the final interface or behavior of the released build.

Step 1: Research the species with your zoo vets

Begin in the zoo that is supplying the animals. The reported requirement is species research by the zoo’s vets; this research unlocks the possibility of releasing that species to a reserve. If the release option is absent, incomplete species research is the first progression gate to check.

Research is separate from simply owning, breeding, or trading an animal. Keep the species identified in your zoo’s research system and allow the relevant vet work to finish before evaluating the release group. Since the available guide does not provide a button-by-button path, use the current game’s species, vet, or research panel rather than relying on a pre-release menu name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Take on the required conservation projects

After species research, accept the conservation projects associated with release. These projects are described as part of the eligibility path, not optional flavor objectives. Their exact objectives and completion conditions are not listed in the pre-launch material, so read the project card attached to the species and track its progress in the current interface.

Projects can affect when a release group becomes selectable. If animals meet their welfare checks but the release action remains unavailable, confirm that every project requirement has been accepted and completed rather than assuming the animals themselves are the problem.

Step 3: Select the release group and inspect its requirements

Open the species’ release workflow and choose the animals you intend to send. The group may be one animal, two animals for a breeding pair, or a larger set. The correct size is species-dependent; adding extra animals is not a substitute for meeting a requirement that the selected group fails.

Longevity

Longevity is one example of a reported release check. Read the value shown for each candidate and select animals that satisfy the current requirement. The source does not state whether the game measures age, expected lifespan, or another displayed metric, so use the wording and indicator in your build as the authority.

Fertility

Fertility can also affect eligibility. A healthy animal is not automatically a suitable release candidate if its fertility indicator falls short of the requirement displayed for the species or group.

Genetic diversity

Genetic diversity is another named example. When several animals are required, inspect the group as a whole rather than checking only one individual. A group can contain healthy animals and still fail if its genetics do not provide the diversity the release screen requests.

Welfare and other displayed checks

The guide emphasizes animal welfare, but it does not publish a numerical welfare threshold or a complete list of checks. Resolve every warning shown by the release screen, including any welfare, health, group-composition, or project condition, before moving on. Capture or note the exact unmet label in your own game; that is more reliable than applying a threshold from an unofficial guide.

Step 4: Choose a reserve by species and ecosystem fit

Reserve selection starts with the animal’s landscape or biome needs, then narrows to locations that offer a suitable ecosystem. The guide states that each reserve can have several possible ecosystems and that the available choices depend on location. It also states that not every species can be released into every reserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No complete species-to-reserve map was published in the available material. Treat named locations and ecosystem examples as illustrations, not a definitive compatibility chart:

Reserve or setting described before launch Ecosystem example How to use the information
Grassland reserve Watering holes Consider when the species’ landscape needs fit open grassland and dependable water; confirm the actual species match in-game.
Broadleaf reserve Lowland marshes Consider when a wet, broadleaf setting suits the species; the example is not a universal assignment.
Sumatra reserve example Rainforests Use the location as a rainforest illustration, then verify the ecosystem offered by your current reserve.
Great Rift Valley reserve example Grasslands Use the location as a grassland illustration, not proof that every grassland species belongs there.

The practical decision order is therefore: identify the species’ landscape needs, inspect the ecosystems offered at a candidate reserve, and select only a location that presents a suitable option. If the species information and reserve information disagree, do not force the release; choose another ecosystem or reserve.

Step 5: Restore the ecosystem before releasing animals

A suitable biome is not necessarily a ready habitat. The pre-launch checklist calls for environmental cleanup and a balance of physical and biological features before the release.

Remove environmental pollution

Clear pollution from the proposed ecosystem. Pollution is explicitly listed as a condition to remove, so an otherwise appropriate reserve can remain unsuitable until the affected area is cleaned.

Remove invasive plants

Clear invasive plants as well. Do not assume that adding attractive or abundant vegetation improves the score; the guide distinguishes suitable foliage from invasive growth that must be removed.

Balance water, foliage, and terrain

Adjust the ecosystem’s water, foliage, and terrain to the species and location. The available source does not provide target percentages, depths, plant counts, elevation ranges, or soil values. Use the reserve’s current indicators and the species’ requirements to make incremental changes, then recheck suitability after each major adjustment.

Fill ecological roles after the basics are stable

Once the ecosystem is clean and physically suitable, add animals that fill different ecological roles. The guide’s examples include animals that root through soil, browse trees, or hunt. These roles are described as a way to raise biodiversity and the reserve rating; they are not a replacement for the released species’ own habitat requirements.

Step 6: Release only after the group and reserve both pass

When the group is eligible and the destination ecosystem is suitable, confirm the release in the current game interface. The conceptual checklist places release after research, projects, group checks, and ecosystem preparation. If the confirmation remains unavailable, revisit those gates rather than repeatedly changing unrelated habitat decorations.

Keep a record of which animals you selected if the game allows individual removal or group editing. This makes it easier to identify whether a particular animal’s longevity, fertility, genetics, or welfare indicator is blocking the group.

How to use the Research Network

The reported Wildlife Reserve progression begins with a Research Outpost that includes a Research Vehicle. The network is not merely a transport feature: the guide says it raises Biodiversity Rating, earns Conservation Credits, and unlocks higher levels of species research that can help animals in your zoos.

Research Outpost and Research Vehicle

Establish the outpost, then use its vehicle to explore the reserve. The guide says you can drive the vehicle or explore on foot. A compass can point toward nearby animals, giving you a practical way to locate wildlife while building research progress.

Observation and monitoring equipment

The named equipment includes Observation Platforms, Acoustic Monitors, and Camera Traps. These tools support observation without requiring you to disturb the animals. The pre-launch material does not specify construction costs, power requirements, ranges, or exact research yields, so consult the in-game tooltips for those values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photography and behavior research

The reported exploration loop includes photographing animal behavior without disturbing the animals. Follow the compass, approach using the reserve’s observation tools or on foot, and use the behavior prompt available in your build. Research progress and rewards may depend on what the current objective requests.

Why the network matters to release planning

Higher Biodiversity Rating and Conservation Credits can support broader reserve progression, while species research can benefit animals in your zoos. The guide does not state that a particular research level automatically unlocks every release, so treat the network as progression support rather than a universal substitute for species-specific projects and group requirements.

Where Wildlife Reserves appear

The guide places Wildlife Reserves in Career, Sandbox, and Franchise modes and says they are managed through the Planet Hub. These mode and access claims are pre-launch and should be verified against the current build before you rely on a particular menu route. Interface labels and mode-specific exceptions were not confirmed in the available material.

If a reserve does not appear where expected, check that you are in a supported mode, that the relevant progression is complete, and that the game is updated. Avoid treating a missing pre-launch menu name as evidence that the reserve feature is unavailable.

Troubleshooting a blocked release

What you see Most useful check What is not established
The species cannot be selected for release Confirm vet research and any linked conservation project. The exact unlock level or menu label.
The group is rejected Inspect longevity, fertility, genetic diversity, welfare, and every warning on the release screen. Universal numerical thresholds.
The reserve is unavailable Check whether its ecosystem fits the species’ landscape needs and whether the reserve offers a suitable option. A complete reserve-to-species compatibility map.
The ecosystem is unsuitable Remove pollution and invasive plants, then rebalance water, foliage, and terrain. Target percentages, counts, or terrain measurements.
Biodiversity or reserve rating is low Use the Research Network and consider ecological roles such as rooting, browsing, and hunting. The precise rating contribution of each role.

These checks follow the reported progression order. They do not guarantee that a launch-build error has the same cause, so read the game’s exact warning before changing the reserve.

Common planning mistakes

Choosing a famous reserve instead of a compatible one

A reserve’s name or real-world location does not prove that it accepts a particular animal. Compatibility is based on the ecosystem offered at that location and the species’ needs. Verify both in-game.

Assuming a pair is always enough

The release group can be a single animal, a pair, or a larger group depending on the species. Select the group size the release screen requests rather than applying one rule to every animal.

Ignoring genetics because welfare is high

Welfare and genetic diversity are separate considerations in the reported examples. Check both, along with longevity and fertility, before changing the habitat.

Improving scenery while leaving contamination

Decorative planting cannot substitute for removing pollution and invasive plants. Restore the ecosystem’s basic conditions first, then add role-filling wildlife.

Using pre-launch numbers as permanent rules

The available guide does not publish exact thresholds, and its checklist was written before the stated October 13 launch. Treat values and labels shown by your current game as authoritative if they differ from pre-launch descriptions.

A practical release checklist

  1. Research the species with your zoo’s vets.
  2. Accept and complete the conservation projects tied to that species.
  3. Open the release workflow and identify whether it needs one animal, a pair, or a larger group.
  4. Check the displayed longevity, fertility, genetic diversity, welfare, and any additional requirements.
  5. Choose a reserve whose available ecosystem matches the species’ landscape needs.
  6. Clear environmental pollution and invasive plants.
  7. Balance water, foliage, and terrain for the selected species and location.
  8. Use suitable ecological roles to support biodiversity and reserve rating.
  9. Release the eligible group only after both the group and ecosystem pass the current game’s checks.

What is confirmed—and what still needs verification

The pre-launch material supports the overall progression: research, conservation projects, an eligible release group, a suitable reserve ecosystem, environmental cleanup, and the final release. It also supports the existence of a Research Network with an outpost, vehicle, observation equipment, biodiversity progression, Conservation Credits, and species research benefits.

It does not establish exact thresholds, a complete species-to-reserve map, precise button labels, confirmation prompts, construction costs, or every mode-specific access exception. Those details should be read from the released game’s interface and current help material. This distinction matters most when troubleshooting a group that appears healthy but is still rejected.
