You host and run the game; the guest joins through Steam or Steam Link and may not need a Steam account.
The important limitation is that Remote Play Together is not universal. The game must support the feature and include a suitable local multiplayer mode.
What Steam Remote Play Together does
Remote Play Together streams a locally multiplayer Steam game from the host’s PC to other players over the internet. The host’s computer renders the game, sends guests video and audio, and receives their controller or keyboard-and-mouse input. The game treats those inputs much like additional devices connected locally.
It is designed mainly for local co-op, split-screen, shared-screen, party, hot-seat, and other couch multiplayer games. Steam describes sessions as supporting up to four players, with more potentially possible on fast connections, but the game’s own player limit and control design still apply.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Remote Play Together is different from:
- Ordinary Remote Play: streaming your own game to another device.
- Native online multiplayer: the game’s built-in internet mode, where each player may need a copy, account, or separate game instance.
- Remote Play Together: one host runs a supported local multiplayer game while guests join the same streamed session.
Steam’s overview is available at the official Remote Play Together page.
What you need
Host checklist
- Steam running on a PC.
- The supported game installed and launched from the host’s library.
- A Steam store page showing the Remote Play Together feature.
- A stable internet connection and a PC capable of running the game while encoding its stream.
- Controllers or other input devices suitable for the game.
Guest checklist
- An invitation link or a Steam invitation.
- Steam, Steam Link, or another supported Steam Link device.
- A controller for most games. Touch controls are practical only in titles designed for them.
- A compatible phone, tablet, PC, Mac, Linux system, TV device, or other supported platform.
Steam Link is available across a changing range of mobile, desktop, TV, and VR platforms. Check Steam’s current Remote Play page for the latest device support.
How to invite anyone with a Steam link
- Open Steam on the host PC.
- Confirm that the game supports Remote Play Together.
- Launch the game and enter its local multiplayer area if necessary.
- Open the Steam Overlay, traditionally with Shift+Tab.
- Open the Friends list or Remote Play Together controls.
- Choose the option to create, copy, or share an Invite Anyone link.
- Send the complete link privately.
- Keep Steam and the game running while the guest connects.
Steam’s exact labels and menu locations can differ between the current desktop client, the Overlay, and Big Picture mode. If you do not see the option, look in the Friends list and Remote Play controls after the game has fully launched.
Valve introduced Invite Anyone so a host could send a URL to someone without a Steam account. Account-free joining does not mean account-free software: the guest still needs a compatible Steam or Steam Link connection path. Treat the invitation URL like a temporary access link and avoid posting it publicly.

How the guest joins
From a PC or Mac
- Open the invitation link.
- Follow the prompt to open Steam or Steam Link.
- Connect a controller before joining if possible.
- Accept the session and wait for the game stream.
- Use the controller to join the game’s local player screen.
A USB controller is often the simplest option on a computer, particularly for games designed around gamepads.
From a phone or tablet
- Install and open Steam Link.
- Open the invitation link on the mobile device, or follow the invitation handoff from Steam Chat when offered.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to join the host.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller if the game requires physical controls.
- Use touch controls only when the game supports them well.
The exact route can vary between an account-free invite link, Steam Chat, the browser, and Steam Link. If one handoff fails, try opening the link on a computer or launching Steam Link directly on the guest device. Valve documents the current mobile options on its Remote Play page.
Set up controllers, keyboard, and mouse
Connect controllers before joining whenever possible. Once the guest appears, the host can manage player participation, controller assignments, volume, voice, and input permissions through the Remote Play controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For the most reliable setup:
- Use one controller per player when the game expects gamepads.
- Assign each controller to a separate player slot.
- Enter the game’s local multiplayer menu before troubleshooting input.
- Restart the game after connecting controllers if it initialized with the wrong devices.
Keyboard and mouse sharing is possible, but Valve says it is disabled by default. The host must explicitly grant access when a guest needs those inputs. Many games support one shared keyboard plus controllers rather than two independent keyboards, so do not assume that two remote keyboard players will behave like two gamepad players.
How many people can play?
Steam advertises Remote Play Together for up to four players and mentions that more may be possible with fast connections. That is not a guarantee that every supported game accepts four guests. A title may support only two local players, require alternating turns, or impose unusual controller limits.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
More players also mean more streamed video, returned input, and network demand. Check the game’s local multiplayer player count before inviting a large group.
What a successful session looks like
The guest should see the host’s game rather than the host’s desktop. After connecting, the guest’s controller should appear as an available input device, and the game should offer a new local player slot, character, profile, or equivalent option. Steam’s session controls should let the host manage input permissions and audio or voice settings.
Troubleshooting Remote Play Together
The Remote Play Together option is missing
- Check the game’s Steam store page for the Remote Play Together feature.
- Launch the game fully before opening the Overlay.
- Confirm that the Steam Overlay is enabled for the game.
- Look in the Friends list as well as the in-game Remote Play panel.
- Restart Steam and try again.
- Test another known-supported game to determine whether the problem is title-specific.
The guest cannot open the invitation link
- Send the complete URL again rather than a truncated copy.
- Try opening it in a desktop browser.
- Install or open Steam Link on the guest device.
- Try the Steam desktop client instead of the mobile route, or vice versa.
- Have the host copy or generate the invitation again.
- Launch Steam Link directly if the browser-to-app handoff fails.
Browser, Steam, Steam Chat, and Steam Link handoffs vary by device and installed software.
The guest joins but cannot control the game
- Connect and verify the controller before joining.
- Check that the host granted input permission.
- Confirm that the game has reached a menu where another player can join.
- Assign the controller to the correct player slot.
- Check for conflicts between Steam Input and the game’s controller settings.
- Confirm that the game supports simultaneous players rather than only hot-seat play.
Everyone appears as Player 1
This usually indicates that the game expects additional players to use controllers, has only one keyboard input, or initialized before the controllers were connected. Disconnect and reconnect the controllers, assign them separately in the Remote Play panel, and restart the game with all devices already connected. Also check the game’s own local multiplayer instructions.
The video is blurry, delayed, or disconnects
The host is running the game and streaming it, so the host’s PC, upload connection, and local network are central to performance. Try the following:

- Close downloads, streams, and other bandwidth-heavy activity.
- Lower stream quality or bandwidth settings.
- Reduce the number of guests.
- Lower the game’s graphics settings if the host PC is overloaded.
- Switch to native online multiplayer if the game is highly latency-sensitive.
Steam describes Remote Play as low-latency streaming, but low latency is not the same as no latency. Rhythm games, competitive games, precision platformers, and other timing-sensitive titles can be poor fits even when the connection technically works.

Audio or voice chat fails
Check the selected microphone and output device, Steam voice permissions, the game’s own voice settings, and microphone permissions on mobile or desktop. If Steam voice is unreliable, use a separate voice service while leaving the game stream in Remote Play.
The guest is asked to sign in
Account-free joining is supported through Invite Anyone, but a guest may still be routed through the Steam desktop client, Steam Link, Steam Chat, or a platform permission screen. Try another supported joining path rather than assuming that every sign-in prompt is a failure. The current device and app flow determines what the guest sees.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Remote Play Together is the right choice
Use it when only one person owns the game, the game has local multiplayer, guests have suitable controllers, and everyone can tolerate some streaming delay. It is especially useful for shared-screen, party, puzzle, sports, and couch co-op games that lack native online play.
Choose native online multiplayer instead when players need separate cameras, inventories, save files, or worlds; when the game already has a strong online mode; when the host’s upload connection is limited; when precise timing matters; or when the group exceeds the local multiplayer limit.

Remote Play Together is a free Steam feature, but the host may need to buy the supported game. Guests generally do not need to buy a separate copy for the Remote Play Together session. To find compatible games, use Steam’s Remote Play Together catalog filter. Game prices vary by title, region, edition, and sale.
Do guests need a Steam account?
Not necessarily. Valve’s Invite Anyone feature allows a host to send a link to someone who does not have a Steam account. The guest still needs a compatible way to open the invitation and receive the Steam Link stream.
Can guests join from different operating systems?
Guests can use supported Steam or Steam Link clients on compatible desktop and mobile devices. This is cross-platform streaming, not necessarily native cross-play or cross-save. Device support and the exact invitation flow can change, so consult Steam’s current compatibility information.
Is a controller required?
Not always, but a controller is usually the clearest choice for local multiplayer games. Keyboard and mouse sharing must be enabled by the host and may not provide independent controls for each player. Mobile guests may also need a Bluetooth controller if touch controls are unsuitable.
