Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To mix audio remotely for a live stream, first decide where the mix will happen: at the venue on a mixer you control remotely, or at another location using audio transported over a network. Then route a clean program mix to OBS, monitor what OBS will send, and build a separate mix-minus return if a remote guest needs to hear the show. These are different workflows; remote control of a local mixer does not by itself transport audio to a distant operator.
Choose the workflow before you connect anything
There are two common meanings of “remote mixing,” and they solve different problems:
- Remote control of a local mixer: The mixer and audio sources remain at the venue, while you adjust the console or software from elsewhere. The control connection is remote; the audio still needs a path from the venue to the streaming encoder.
- Audio transported to a remote mixer or operator: Audio sources are sent across a network to be mixed elsewhere, then the resulting program mix must reach the encoder. This adds transport, buffering, routing, monitoring, and network-recovery considerations.
Before setup, draw the actual signal path: microphones and playback sources → mixer or interface/software routing → program mix → OBS → streaming platform. Add a second path for guest audio when needed. Decide which location is responsible for the final program mix, and verify that both audio and control connections support that plan.
Route a local program mix into OBS
Map sources, buses, and destinations
For a straightforward stream mixed at the venue, send the intended program bus from your mixer or audio interface into OBS. A typical path is microphones and game or playback audio → mixer/interface → program bus → OBS. Do not assume that a device’s main output, loopback channel, or virtual output carries the mix you want; confirm what each output contains.

A USB audio interface with loopback or virtual outputs can be one way to make a software mix available to OBS. PreSonus documents a specific Revelator Dynamic workflow in which its software mixer sends “Stream Mix A” through a virtual audio output to OBS: PreSonus Revelator Dynamic livestream setup. That example is not proof that all interfaces provide equivalent routing. Check the exact device’s driver and operating-system support, available inputs and virtual outputs, and whether it can provide separate buses if you need a guest return.
Check levels at the source and in OBS
- Start at each source. Speak into each microphone or play each source at its normal level. Check its physical preamp gain or software input level before adjusting the stream mix.
- Select the intended bus. Confirm that the feed entering OBS is the program mix, not an unintended monitor, raw input, or guest-return bus.
- Check OBS’s Audio Mixer. Watch the source meter while each input is active. Adjust the source and OBS fader as needed, and make sure the source is not muted.
- Listen to the monitored OBS signal. Use OBS Audio Monitoring to hear the signal at the point it enters the stream path. Meters show level, but listening confirms that the correct sources and bus are actually routed.
- Keep peaks below the digital ceiling. OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the maximum digital level; exceeding the output ceiling can cause clipping distortion. Avoid peaks at or above it.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide covers meters, faders, mute and monitoring controls, and recommends checking the signal early in the chain as well as in OBS. Its Audio Mixer Technical Details explains the digital output ceiling. Check the OBS monitor path as well as the meters: a clean-looking meter cannot tell you whether the audience is receiving the right mix.

Send a mix-minus to a remote guest
A remote guest typically needs to hear the host and relevant show audio, but not their own voice returning with transmission delay. A mix-minus is a guest-specific return mix that includes the other desired program sources while excluding that guest’s incoming channel.
- Create the full program mix for the stream, including the guest’s incoming audio.
- Create a separate return bus for the guest. Include the host and any other show audio the guest should hear, but exclude that guest’s own incoming channel.
- In the call or contribution application, select the guest-return bus as the microphone or input sent to the guest.
- Route the guest’s received audio into the full stream mix, not back into the guest-return bus.
- Test both directions: confirm the audience mix includes the guest and the guest return excludes their own voice.
With multiple guests, each person may need an individual return mix that removes that person’s own incoming channel. Confirm that the mixer, interface, software, and call application can provide the required independent buses and inputs. The Critical Listening Lab mix-minus explainer provides a secondary overview of the routing concept.

Transport audio across a network with latency in mind
Network audio may suit remote production, but judge the complete path rather than relying on a transport’s headline latency. Include the transmitter and receiver, application buffers, network conditions, mixer, monitoring, and any conferencing or contribution software. The acceptable delay depends on the use: a workflow where timing against a live microphone matters has different needs from one where a modest delay does not block production.
NDI/Vizrt’s Technical Facts About NDI for Audio says an NDI audio transmitter can deliver a stream over a network in 6 ms, and warns that this may not suit some same-environment microphone monitoring. That 6 ms figure describes transmitter network delivery—not guaranteed end-to-end or round-trip latency through mixing, application buffers, conferencing, and monitoring. The same document identifies 48 kHz as the standard sample rate for live production; it is the stated standard in that NDI documentation, not a universal requirement for every system.

NDI’s audio use cases include live-streaming/broadcast and remote-production workflows, and note that some commentary or production settings can tolerate its latency when synchronization is not a blocking issue. NDI Audio Direct is a collection of VST plugins for Windows DAWs, intended to send and receive NDI audio in software workflows, including virtual or cloud environments. Treat it as an option for compatible systems rather than a universal substitute for a local interface or dedicated audio-over-IP setup. Confirm channel count, routing, network reachability, monitoring delay, and how the system recovers if connectivity fails.

| Consideration | Remote control of a local mixer | Networked audio to a remote mixer |
|---|---|---|
| Where the audio is mixed | At the venue, on the local console or software mixer | At the remote operator’s mixing system |
| What the network carries | Control commands; audio still needs a route to the encoder | Audio streams to and from the remote mixing location, as required |
| Latency concern | Audio monitoring and control responsiveness still matter | Assess the complete end-to-end path, including buffers and monitoring |
| Routing needs | Program mix and any independent guest returns | Transported channels, remote mix buses, and any required returns |
| Compatibility checks | Console/software remote-control support, operating system, drivers, and routing | Supported transport and applications, channel count, routing, and network reachability |
| Network failure planning | Keep a plan for losing remote control while local audio remains active | Check the behavior of the audio path and how the production recovers if it fails |
| Setup complexity | Depends on the mixer’s control features and the venue-to-encoder audio path | Depends on transport, buffering, channel routing, and the remote mixing setup |
No single approach is best for every production. Choose based on where the operator can work, how many independent mixes are needed, what latency the use case can tolerate, device and application compatibility, and the plan for network interruptions.

Troubleshoot common routing problems
- OBS shows no audio: Check that the intended device or virtual output is selected, its bus is active, the source is not muted, and the signal is present at the mixer/interface output.
- The meters move but the stream sounds wrong: Listen through OBS Audio Monitoring, then verify that OBS receives the program bus rather than a raw input or monitor mix.
- The audio distorts: Reduce the level at the source or mix stages and avoid peaks at or above 0 dBFS, the maximum digital level described by OBS.
- A guest hears their own delayed voice: Remove that guest’s incoming channel from their return mix, then check that the return is not routed back into itself.
- The guest is missing from the stream: Check that the call application’s received guest audio is included in the full program mix, independently of the guest-return bus.
- A remote audio feed feels late or out of sync: Check the full path, including transport, application buffering, mixing, and monitoring. Do not assume a transmitter-latency figure represents the complete interactive round trip.
- A virtual output is unavailable: Verify the interface’s driver, operating-system and application compatibility, and supported routing. A feature documented for one model does not establish equivalent support on another.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should keep uploaded video live 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option from remote audio mixing: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video streamed to YouTube, not a camera-based live production or a substitute for routing a remote guest mix. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
