You can usually remove claimed material from a YouTube livestream archive without uploading a new video: in YouTube Studio, open the archive’s copyright notice, choose the edit that matches the claim, preview and save it, then wait for processing and verify the claim has cleared. Back up the archive first—YouTube says saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be reverted using “Revert to original.”
Before you edit: identify the notice and protect the archive
First check that the notice is a Content ID claim, not a copyright takedown. A Content ID claim may be addressed by editing the claimed material or, if you have the necessary rights, disputing it. A takedown request can remove the video and result in a copyright strike; deleting a video does not resolve a strike. See YouTube’s explanation of Content ID claims and its guide to video removals.
Before making any edit, download a copy of the archive or preserve it with Google Takeout. YouTube Help warns: “Starting in June 2025, once you save your edited video, you will not be able to revert the changes.” This means an edit saved in Studio Editor is not a reversible trial; keep an original copy in case you need it.
Choose the edit that fits the claim
| Option | What it changes | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Trim out segment | Removes the selected video interval, including its picture and sound. | Use for a claimed video segment, or when removing the entire interval is acceptable. |
| Replace song | Replaces eligible claimed music with a track from the YouTube Audio Library. | Can retain the segment with different music; available for eligible audio claims. |
| Erase song | Attempts to remove the claimed song while retaining speech and sound effects. | Try when keeping dialogue matters. Song-only erasure may fail, especially with music that is hard to separate. |
| Mute all sound in claimed segments | Mutes all audio throughout the claimed interval. | Usually faster and more likely to clear an audio claim, but removes dialogue and other sounds in that interval too. |
Whichever edit you choose, it must address the full claimed material. If any claimed content remains, YouTube will not remove the claim. YouTube describes these editing options and their limits in Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.

Remove the claimed segment in YouTube Studio
- Open the archive and its claim. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, locate the livestream archive, open its copyright notice, and select View details.
- Choose the relevant claim. Find the claim you want to address and select Take Action. Choose Trim out segment for a video interval, or Replace song or Erase song for an eligible audio claim. If you choose erasure, select whether to erase the song or mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- Set the edit and preview it. For a trim, adjust the start and end times if needed so the selection covers the entire claimed segment. Preview the result. For music, listen to the proposed replacement or erased/muted interval and check that the outcome is acceptable.
- Save only when you are satisfied. Confirm the edit in Studio Editor. While it processes, the archive remains in its previous state and you cannot make further edits to it. Processing time varies.
- Reload and verify. After processing finishes, reload the page. Check that the edit took effect and that the claim is gone. If it remains, review the claimed interval for material that was missed; consider a more complete mute or trim if that suits your needs.
If you think the claim or timestamps are wrong
Do not dispute a claim merely because it interrupted a livestream or because a timestamp appears inconvenient. YouTube says to dispute only when you are confident you have the necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes, and an invalid dispute can lead the copyright owner to request removal of the video. If the claim’s timestamps are inaccurate, YouTube’s guidance points creators to Creator Support. Review the official claim and dispute guidance before deciding.
Why a livestream archive may be missing
YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, including encoder, webcam, and mobile streams, but this is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be captured. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup; this archive-availability guidance is separate from the post-claim editing steps. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving help.
