To start a YouTube Live encoder at a set India Standard Time, create the upcoming live event in YouTube Studio, then use Ubuntu cron to launch your playback or encoder script at the corresponding time. These are separate tasks: cron starts a command; it does not create the YouTube event or turn a YouTube playlist into a live broadcast.
If by “playlist” you mean an existing YouTube channel playlist that YouTube should play natively as a scheduled live stream, the official YouTube instructions cited here do not document that feature. The supported workflow is to schedule a live event and send it a feed from an encoder.
What cron can—and cannot—schedule
A scheduled YouTube Live event is an upcoming stream with its own watch page. An encoder separately sends video and audio to that event using its stream URL and stream key. Ubuntu cron can start the encoder or media-playback process at a matching time, but cron does not create the event, supply playlist playback by itself, or guarantee that YouTube will begin broadcasting when a feed arrives. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes checking the preview in Live Control Room and going live. YouTube’s encoder instructions and live stream settings describe the event and feed setup.
Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, and schedule a stream. This creates the upcoming event and watch page; it is separate from the Ubuntu schedule. YouTube says scheduled streams can be promoted and viewers may receive reminders. Follow the current YouTube encoder instructions for the Studio workflow.
- Prepare the media source: Make sure the script you plan to launch can provide the intended recording or playlist as encoder input. A YouTube channel playlist is not automatically an encoder input simply because it exists on YouTube.
- Configure the encoder: Use the stream URL and stream key associated with the scheduled event. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, and logs. YouTube explains these settings in its live stream settings.
- Check account eligibility: YouTube’s live-streaming overview describes channel eligibility requirements, including verification and restrictions. Requirements and interface details can change, so check that page and the account’s current Studio status before scheduling.
Choose how cron will interpret India time
Use the IANA timezone name Asia/Kolkata when you need India’s clock time. Avoid putting the abbreviation “IST” in configuration: it can be ambiguous. The host’s timezone and installed cron implementation determine how an ordinary cron schedule is interpreted.

Option 1: Set a cron-table timezone, if supported
The Ubuntu Noble crontab manual documents CRON_TZ for the cronie implementation, where it sets the timezone used to interpret the table’s times. That documentation does not establish that every Ubuntu host’s cron daemon supports the directive. Check the installed package and its manual before relying on it. Ubuntu Noble crontab manual
Option 2: Use the host timezone as the schedule basis
If the installed daemon does not support CRON_TZ, either set the machine’s timezone to the intended schedule basis or convert the desired India clock time to the host’s timezone. Changing the system timezone may affect other services, so consider who else depends on it. Verify the host clock and the next intended run rather than assuming the conversion is correct.

Write the cron entry
Cron uses five time fields followed by the command: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. For a daemon that supports CRON_TZ, this illustrative entry starts a script daily at 20:30 Asia/Kolkata time:

30 20 * * * /usr/local/bin/start-youtube-playlist-stream >> /var/log/youtube-stream.log 2>&1This is a schedule shape, not a ready-made encoder command. Replace the script and log paths with paths that exist on the target system, and verify permissions, media selection, encoder arguments, credentials, and log access. Cron runs a job as the crontab owner, in a non-interactive environment; provide any needed executable paths, working directory, and environment explicitly. For a per-user crontab, do not add a username field. In /etc/crontab or a file under /etc/cron.d/, include the required username field in the schedule line; follow the format documented for that system.
Preflight the scheduled broadcast
- Run the exact script manually under the same account that owns the crontab. Confirm it can access the media and encoder, and that it produces a feed.
- Confirm the event is scheduled in YouTube Studio and that the script uses the matching event’s stream settings.
- Check the host clock, timezone, cron daemon, schedule syntax, executable permissions, and log destination. Confirm the next run using the tools available on that host.
- Test the complete path before relying on unattended playback. YouTube advises starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the event, then checking the Live Control Room preview and starting the stream. A cron launch alone does not prove the feed reached YouTube. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Verify whether this event and account configuration requires an operator to click Go live after the preview appears. YouTube’s general instructions include that action, so do not assume an unattended connection will start the public broadcast until you have tested the specific setup.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The job runs at the wrong clock time: Check the host timezone and cron implementation. Use
CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkataonly if the installed daemon supports it; otherwise convert the time to the host’s schedule basis. - The cron job runs, but no video appears: Run the script as the crontab owner and inspect its logs. Check that file paths, working directory, environment, permissions, and encoder arguments are valid in cron’s non-interactive environment.
- YouTube receives no feed or the wrong event receives it: Confirm the encoder uses the URL and key for the intended scheduled event, and that the media source is available. Keep the stream key private.
- The feed is visible, but the event is not live: Check the Live Control Room preview and whether the event requires a manual Go live action. Do not treat a successful cron launch as confirmation that YouTube is broadcasting.
- The entry works in a personal crontab but not in a system cron file: Check which file contains the entry. System crontab files such as
/etc/crontaband/etc/cron.d/require a username field; a per-user crontab does not.
