A newly placed fence drops an item when demolished; an older one does not. If a fence is already broken, you can place a replacement directly from your inventory.
How to remove an intact fence
- Equip a tool.
- Face the fence you want to remove.
- Use your configured tool-use control. The control varies by platform, and keyboard and mouse bindings can be remapped; check the game’s Controls reference if you are unsure which input to use.
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s crafting reference says a newly placed fence drops an item when demolished, but an older fence does not. If you are clearing an aged fence, do not expect to get its materials back.

How to replace a broken fence
You do not need to demolish a damaged fence first. Select a replacement fence from your inventory and use it on the broken fence to replace it directly. If left alone, damaged fences eventually disappear. A Gold Clock on the farm prevents fence decay, according to the wiki’s crafting reference.
Why won’t my fence break?
First, make sure you are using the tool-use control for your platform and targeting the fence. If the usual tool does not remove it, the fence may come from a mod or be altered by one. Custom fence data can specify which tool IDs or tool types are allowed to remove it, so the correct tool depends on that mod’s configuration; see the fence modding reference.
