If your friend has left the multiplayer session, talk to their custom character and send them to camp. They will be stored in Withers’ Wardrobe of Wayward Friends, where you can retrieve them later—or they return automatically when their player rejoins.
Send an absent player’s character to camp
- Make sure your friend is no longer connected to the session. A connected player’s custom character must remain in the party, so you cannot dismiss that character while their player is present. See the BG3 Wiki multiplayer guide.
- Speak to the absent friend’s character and choose the dialogue option to send them to camp.
- Continue with your remaining party. The dismissed character is stored in Withers’ Wardrobe of Wayward Friends at the campsite. Larian introduced the wardrobe in Patch 2 as a way to dismiss co-op party members from a campaign: Patch 2 Now Live.
Bring the character back
There are two ways to return the stored character to your party:
- Retrieve them yourself: At camp, drag the character’s icon out of Withers’ Wardrobe, as you would drag an item. The BG3 Wiki multiplayer guide documents this method.
- Have your friend rejoin: The character returns automatically when their player rejoins the session, according to the BG3 Wiki multiplayer guide.
What the wardrobe can and cannot store
This feature is for a co-op player’s custom character, commonly called a Tav—not for dismissing recruited Origin companions such as Gale. Larian explicitly limited the Patch 2 solution to custom Tavs in its Patch 2 notes.
Dead avatars are a separate case: Patch 4 added the ability to dismiss dead avatars to Withers’ Wardrobe. Larian’s Patch 4 notes describe that change.

If the character will not come out
Check that the game is updated and consider whether your platform, mods, or save may be affecting the interaction. Larian’s April 15, 2025 Patch 8 notes include a fix for a multiplayer crash when taking custom avatars out of the wardrobe. That fix does not establish that every platform, modded game, or save is free of issues.
