To remove a mod cleanly, uninstall or deactivate it with the tool that installed it, back up saves and other data you want to keep, then remove documented leftover files if necessary. If the game’s installation is still altered, use the launcher’s verification or repair feature. The exact steps depend on the game, mod manager, and platform; verifying files does not guarantee that a mod-dependent save will work.
Before removing a mod, protect your saves
Copy any saves, worlds, profiles, or other user-created data you want to keep to a separate location before deleting files or uninstalling anything. Do not assume saves are independent of mods: a game may rely on mod content or changes to load a campaign correctly. SEGA Support warns that removing modifications may mean starting a new campaign (SEGA: How to Remove Mods and Related Files). Minecraft likewise recommends backing up worlds, inventory, progress, and other wanted data before manual removal; it says deleted files cannot be recovered by its support team (Minecraft: Managing Data and Game Storage).
If you are unsure where a game stores saves, check that game’s official support instructions before deleting or moving its folders. Game data and mod files can be stored in different locations, and a folder that looks like installation clutter may contain a world or other personal data.
Remove the mod with the tool that installed it
Start with the mod manager, workshop, or game-specific method that currently controls the mod. Use its deactivate, uninstall, or unsubscribe option rather than deleting files at random. SEGA’s instructions for supported Total War titles include unchecking a mod, removing it from a profile, deactivating all mods, and unsubscribing where applicable (SEGA Support).

After removal, launch the game and check whether it starts and behaves as expected. If the mod manager no longer lists the mod but the game still loads mod-related content or reports missing files, proceed to game-specific cleanup rather than assuming the manager removed every manually added file.
Choose the right cleanup route
| Situation | What to do | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| The mod is still listed in its manager or workshop | Deactivate or uninstall it there first; unsubscribe if the game’s instructions call for it. | Removing the mod may affect a save that depends on it. |
| The mod was copied into the game manually, or files remain after manager removal | Use the game’s official instructions to identify and remove the relevant files, then verify the installation through its launcher if available. | Locations and user-data risks vary by game; do not apply a folder path from another title. |
| The game still has altered or missing installation files | Use the platform that installed the game to verify or repair it. | Launcher verification is not a universal mod remover and does not repair a mod-dependent save. |
Remove leftover files only when you know what they are
When managed removal is not enough, consult the exact game’s instructions for its mod locations. SEGA notes that older Total War mod files may be found in the game’s data or mods folders (SEGA Support). That guidance is specific to the relevant games; there is no single mod-folder path that applies to every title or operating system.

Be particularly careful with game-data folders that also hold saves or user-created content. Minecraft’s documented locations, for example, differ by operating system: `.minecraft` under the Windows roaming profile, `~/Library/Application Support/` on macOS, and `~/.minecraft/` on Linux. These are Minecraft data locations, not universal mod-removal paths; back up wanted data before deleting anything (Minecraft Support).
App-based removal can have unexpected consequences too. CurseForge’s Sims 4 guidance distinguishes content in Mods or Tray folders and warns that deleting through the app can also remove saved Sims and buildings in the library/gallery, though not those in-game (CurseForge: The Sims 4 troubleshooting). Check the removal tool’s stated effects before using a bulk-delete option.

Verify or repair the game installation
Use verification after removing a mod if game files appear altered, missing, or damaged. Verification checks or repairs installation files through the launcher; it is separate from protecting saves and should not be treated as a guarantee that every mod file or save issue will be resolved.
Steam
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish. Steam says verification can take several minutes (Steam Support: Verify integrity of game files).
Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification because local configuration files are not meant to be replaced; this can be normal for most Steam games. Avoid running verification alongside system-intensive tasks or verifying multiple games at once, as Steam advises on its support page.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library.
- Open the game’s three-dot menu and select Manage.
- Select Verify and wait for the process to complete.
Epic says verification repairs changed files and does not affect saved data (Epic Games: How do I verify the integrity of game files?). This assurance concerns the verification process; it does not establish that removing a mod is safe for every game’s save format.

If the manager removal, documented cleanup, and launcher verification do not resolve the problem, follow the game’s official troubleshooting instructions. Reinstalling may be an option, but first back up wanted data and check what the game or platform’s uninstall process removes. Epic lists uninstalling and reinstalling as a troubleshooting route, while Minecraft and other game support guidance shows why user data should be considered separately from installation files (Epic Games: How to uninstall and reinstall a game).

For Steam users considering removing Steam itself rather than just repairing a game, Steam’s separate uninstall guidance says to move the `steamapps` folder outside the Steam directory if preserving installed games during Steam removal (Steam Support: Uninstall Steam). This is not a substitute for backing up saves or checking a specific game’s data locations.
